Dogs Licking Plates

We were in a pub and there was a large group of people near us. One of the men didn’t finish his meal so he got the plate and gave it to his dog to finish. One of his mates said that was terrible but he couldn’t see why as the plate would be going in the dishwasher. I was disgusted

It disgusts me. But many people do it and justify it by the fact the plate goes in the dishwasher. I do accept that nobody probably develops a proper illness from this practice. But psychologically it is absolutely revolting and I would not eat at somebody’s house if I knew they were doing it.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 26/01/2026 08:52

Yanbu, that’s grim

MathsMum3 · 26/01/2026 08:54

I would be disgusted too.

I have a family member with 4 dogs. After each meal, as she loads the dishwasher, she allows the dogs free range to lick any plates and cutlery, as well as anything else already in there. I find it disgusting. Is this normal for dog owners?

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 26/01/2026 08:54

We do it at home, because plates get washed - and honestly anyone who’s eating from a plate in our house has probably had the dogs tongue in their mouth at some point.

I would absolutely not even consider doing it to someone else’s plate though.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 26/01/2026 08:55

I would do it in my own home but poor form to do it in a restaurant or someone else’s home.

Wakemeupinapril · 26/01/2026 08:56

We have 2 ddogs. We def don't want them to associate us eating at the table with them scavenging and lickling plates. Grim.

KimberleyClark · 26/01/2026 08:59

I’d be more worried about the meal containing something dogs shouldn’t have, such as onions.

MsPug · 26/01/2026 08:59

My dog catches me a lick full on the tongue sometimes so a plate lick doesn't bother me 😂

however I would not be letting her lick any plates in public I mean what goes on in my own house stays in my own house 😃

Jijithecat · 26/01/2026 09:07

I was recently in a cafe and saw a dog stood on it's hind legs, so front paws up on the table, lapping up a glass of water.
I haven't been back to the cafe since.

If you want to do it in your own home, fine, but don't inflict it on everyone else.

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/01/2026 09:10

Maybe in your home but not when out.

Myfridgeiscool · 26/01/2026 09:17

That’s awful. I’ve got a dog, she goes nowhere near our food things. She is not allowed near us or anyone else while we are eating. If there are leftovers she gets them in her food bowl.

Sahara123 · 26/01/2026 09:33

My cats eat their cat food off plates which then go in the dishwasher so I guess it’s not really any different. I also catch my cat drinking from my bedside glass of water sometimes, so I have to assume he also does it when I’m not seeing as well !

Sahara123 · 26/01/2026 09:39

Although I do agree that with a dog it’s a bad habit to get into, just put leftovers into their bowl if you have to

olympicsrock · 26/01/2026 09:40

Grim … also grim letting dogs lick you on the mouth .

TheKeatingFive · 26/01/2026 09:42

I don't really get the angst about this if it's going in the dishwasher

StabbyCat · 26/01/2026 09:45

At home the dog gets free rein with the plates as long as there’s nothing that’ll harm him. He waits for permission. Ditto the dregs of a cup of tea or if I have a white hot chocolate.

I’m obsessive about using scalding water to wash up though and I’d never do it in a cafe.

Agree whole heartedly.

Our lab is (as per his breed) food obsessed. He can sometimes be a pain around meal times, staring at people trying to convince them he's starving and they need to share their food with him. He'd be 10 times worse if he was allowed food from our plates.

Any leftovers are put in his food bowl at the end of the meal.

(And for the record, if he is being the beggar, he gets kicked out the room!)

(And also for the record, he is not starving, but a very healthy weight as confirmed by the vets. Although the dog does disagree with this opinion)

Girlintheframe · 26/01/2026 09:48

I have a dog and must admit he does sometimes go for the dishwasher which I do find grim. Absolutely no way would I give him my plate to lick at home or anywhere else. It really turns my stomach

ACynicalDad · 26/01/2026 09:48

Ours did this growing up - at home, but haven't let my own dog do this. It's a bit grim but not the end of the world, they will be washed then sterilised in a commercial kitchen.

TomatoSandwiches · 26/01/2026 09:51

That would put me right off my scampi bites.

How about IN the mouth on a fly by?

fndshalom · 26/01/2026 09:57

Pubs and restaurants I worked in years ago hand washed crockery. I think glasses went through a sort of washer thing. I’ve got dogs and think it’s gross to let them eat from a plate even with a dishwasher.

MamaOooh · 26/01/2026 09:57

Our dogs do the dishwasher pre wash, I've never worried about it much. The dishwasher is boiling and we've never got sick.

I wouldn't let them do it if we had guests though and never in a restaurant because I appreciate it gives others the ick.

RottenBanana · 26/01/2026 09:59

Bleurgh!
They may all go in the dishwasher but psychologically, it is wrong. Especially in public.

99pwithaflake · 26/01/2026 09:59

My dog always licks the plate at home - so do the cats if they get the chance 😂

I’d not let him do it in a restaurant though.
