Dogs Licking Plates

We were in a pub and there was a large group of people near us. One of the men didn’t finish his meal so he got the plate and gave it to his dog to finish. One of his mates said that was terrible but he couldn’t see why as the plate would be going in the dishwasher. I was disgusted

My mum used to let our dog lick plates and cups. And we didn't have a dishwasher in those days! I seem to remember my sister and I had quite frequent stomach upsets!

The whole disease thing is a red herring. There’s loads of things that won’t make you sick but are still unhygienic.

Urine is sterile but we still wash hands after coming into contact.

Not showering (or not using soap and deodorant) won’t make you sick but is still gross.

Picking your nose, smelling your farts…

And letting your dog lick plates in a restaurant.

Allseeingallknowing · 28/01/2026 14:59

If I ever see that happening in a restaurant/ pub I will be informing the relevant authority! Dogs and cats , lovely though they are, have no place in eating establishments

Guide dogs absolutely have a place in eating establishments.

Urine is not sterile once it's left the body

Grim … also grim letting dogs lick you on the mouth .

I agree…I’m shocked at the standards people live to. And if they admit to this?! Utterly grim.

Yes sorry, definitely guide and assistance dogs only. These dogs wouldn’t lick plates anyway! All other dogs are a no no.

We only eat and drink in places that allow dogs. Happily most places now do allow them.

You’d hate the town where we live. Absolutely replete with dog friendly eating establishments, always busy as a result.

They must be desperate for business!

I don't think it is because they are desperate for business but sensible owners knowing that lots of people with dogs don't want to go out and leave them at home.

So many places now allow them - restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, pubs, lots of shops. I think it's great.

France have been dog friendly for years, about time we caught up

I don’t think it’s that although being dog-friendly definitely attracts custom. It’s a resolutely MC area - lots of money about and lots of dog owners. They’re just embracing the modern lifestyle trend of dogs being included pretty much everywhere.

Unfortunately.

We regularly go to a local restaurant with out dog. We go for breakfast, lunch and in the evening.

There are always lots of dogs there and they have all always been well behaved. Our dog just lays quietly either under our table or alongside it.

Some of the children there on the other hand!

Fine, if they’re well behaved and owners don’t let them lick plates! Sounds from reading on here that many do, though.

Allseeingallknowing · 28/01/2026 17:03

I imagine the staff are likely to pat customers dogs, and I bet they don’t keep washing their hands, plus how many are unwittingly consuming dog hairs in their meal? A designated area should be provided. However good the food is, I wouldn’t give these places my custom.

Moulook31 · 28/01/2026 17:12

i know quite a few people who allow their dogs to lick the plates before putting it in dishwasher. Such a disgusting habit.

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/01/2026 17:17

FizzySnap · 28/01/2026 15:35

Nor dog saliva

Human saliva has been all over the cutlery you put in your mouth.

MathsMum3 · 26/01/2026 08:54

I would be disgusted too.

I have a family member with 4 dogs. After each meal, as she loads the dishwasher, she allows the dogs free range to lick any plates and cutlery, as well as anything else already in there. I find it disgusting. Is this normal for dog owners?

I’ve got two dogs and no chance.

I think the tide is turning.

A garden centre and cafe recently posted on social media that they won't be allowing dogs in anymore (I imagine with the exception of guide dogs) due to the number of staff being bitten and dogs fouling in the premises.

I feel sorry for the staff.

Cryingatthegym · 28/01/2026 17:46

This absolutely grosses me out but for some reason I'm fine with my cat licking the remains of my greek yoghurt from my breakfast bowl! I appreciate this is completely illogical.

I think the opposite. Quite a few eating places near me that didn't allow dogs have recently started to allow them. There have been quite a few new coffee places open up in the past couple of months and they all allow dogs.

I can't really understand how staff have been bitten unless they were touching the dog. I have never seen a dog in a eating place, pub, garden centre or shop that has not been on a lead so unlikely the dog is running up to a member of staff and biting them.

Dog fouling is disgusting and the owners that allow that make it bad for the good owners which really annoys me
