Dogs Licking Plates

Goldengirl123 · 26/01/2026 08:50

We were in a pub and there was a large group of people near us. One of the men didn’t finish his meal so he got the plate and gave it to his dog to finish. One of his mates said that was terrible but he couldn’t see why as the plate would be going in the dishwasher. I was disgusted

Good to know all the arse clenchers would leave us happy, healthy, haven't had sickness/diarrhoea in years (might be decades, actually, now I think about it) plate licking dog owners to get on with our sickness free lives. But thanks for the laughs you frothers are giving me. 👍 😁

Just do it in your own home and there’s no issue.

Dogs do not carry some sort of super bacteria that sterilising does not kill.
How convenient that there are no figures to back up your claim.

They carry parasites that are zoonotic and are resistant temperatures that commercial dishwashers will not kill. This a scientific fact. All those saying there is no risk or specific risk from dogs licking food prep or service utensils are just wrong. It might be hard for you to accept because you have never been ill and think 65 degrees will kill anything, but the science is there and you are incorrect. Dishwashers do not sterilise. They generally operate at arount 74 to 80 deg cel in commercial setting which is a sanitising system not sterilising. They op at 64 in domestic sanitising. This does not kill all parasites and this has been scientifically proven. Not all food buisnesses use a dishwasher. Washing in a sink is below 60 to prevent scolding. Dishwashers break down regularly. You can no idea how the plates are going to be washed after you let your dog eat off it. Everyone thinks there is medical level sterilising gping on in kitchens. There isn't.
Based on science, it is an offence in Ireland for animal to eat food off any utensil used in the prep or service of food. If you need confirmation of this google fsai.ie and search animals in food business.
There is no reason to do it and put other peoples health at risk.

That place should be shut down by the council. Grim.

In Ireland it would be under notice to ensure it stopped it and if it didnt it would face enforcement action.

Allseeingallknowing · 26/01/2026 19:39

Probably the same people who don’t wash their hands after the loo, share towels, wash t towels with underpants etc- yuk!

stargirl1701 · 26/01/2026 19:54

I really dislike this although I do know it’s irrational. The dishwasher operates the hot water to a level where no disease vector can survive. Still. 🤢

Umidontknow · 26/01/2026 20:03

One thing to do it at home, but it's really rude to do it at a pub

mydogisthebest · 26/01/2026 20:05

We let our dog lick our plates if there is something safe for him to eat. Would never do it when out though.

We regularly eat out with our dog and he has never once begged when we are eating or tried to steal any food. He lays down and behaves perfectly.

I know quite a few people who have worked in kitchens in pubs, restaurants etc and some of their stories make a dog licking a plate tame in comparison. I think it is just as well the public can't see in a lot of eating places' kitchens

I always wash my hands after using the loo. In fact wash my hands many many many times a day. I also would never ever wash towels with other items.

SouthernNights59 · 26/01/2026 20:18

While I wouldn't let them do it in public my dogs always licked the plates, and some of the cats too. Shock, horror - I don't have a dishwasher!!

I seriously wonder how some of you get through life with all these things which "disgust" you. However, I'm sure a lot of things happen which you don't know about which would really have you spinning 😁

You've reminded me of the first time I went out for dinner with my now DH's parents. His mother was so appallingly rude and snooty - no please, no thank you, didn't even look at the waiter while she was ordering. I was fucking mortified. I shouldn't be surprised if he spat in her food before bringing it through. It would only have been what the snotty cow deserved if he had. 🤬

My cats eat their cat food off plates which then go in the dishwasher so I guess it’s not really any different. I also catch my cat drinking from my bedside glass of water sometimes, so I have to assume he also does it when I’m not seeing as well !

Your cats also lick their arse and vomit hair balls.

Same for dog owners. Dogs eat shit, sniff and lick arseholes and their breath stink.

I can imagine some chefs at some dire places dont wash their hands after taking a shit. Doubt all of the doing it, though.

Greenfinch7 · 26/01/2026 21:07

Doesn't bother me at all. I remember being confused the first time I heard someone was revolted by this- why?
The plates are washed in a dishwasher, which actually sterilises them.

Lots of people kiss and exchange bodily fluids with other humans (sometimes virtual strangers)- now that I could find revolting if I thought about it.

Thank you for this explanation. People seem to be in denial about the risk from dogs licking plates. Also can’t work out why people let dogs lick their face or “ kiss” them …bacteria which can cause various illnesses .. mild or severe including sepsis.

It's not just dire places where chefs don't wash their hands. Also it's some of the very low levels of hygiene and standards when it comes to chopping boards, food storage, wearing a hairnet or head covering, using separate knives, boards etc for meat and veg

AbstractPoison · 26/01/2026 21:46

Yeah look I'd let my dog do it if it was something she could eat in my own home as it does go on a super hot wash in the dishwasher.
But I would never ever do this out, at anyone else's place or in front of anyone in my place.
I don't do it often, not much I eat the dog can anyway. But that sort of something to do behind closed doors if you're going to.

As has been mentioned there are way less hygienic things going on in the kitchen than that. I have seen and heard of a lot of chefs not washing hands after going to the bathroom etc... Ick

My dog spends a large amount of time licking his dick, absolutely not a chance is that fucker coming near my plates 😂

Katemax82 · 26/01/2026 22:15

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 26/01/2026 08:54

We do it at home, because plates get washed - and honestly anyone who’s eating from a plate in our house has probably had the dogs tongue in their mouth at some point.

I would absolutely not even consider doing it to someone else’s plate though.

Why would you have the dogs tongue in your mouth? That's disgusting!

I doubt the proportion is any greater than amongst the general non-dog owning population. But plenty of those non-handwashing people exist and very many of them are eating from the same plates, using the same utensils, and drinking from the same glasses as everyone else in the restaurant. At least the dogs aren't also likely to be preparing the food.

I think it's something we best not think about too much.

Even gourmet chef Gordon Ramsay who likes to scream at others' failings on Kitchen Nightmares has had multiple hygiene problems detected at his own kitchens, including mould, grease and mice. 😫

My own mother worked in a rather less fancy kitchen but remembers food being fished out of the bin and served when they ran out of an item. 😫

Gordon Ramsay restaurant breaches food hygiene rules - TutorCare

According to recent press reports, the (celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's) London restaurant has breached a number of health and safety regulations.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 27/01/2026 04:17

At home, yes, fairly often. And no, contrary to what pps have said, that doesn’t make my dogs steal food. They won’t bother until I put the plate on the floor, then it goes in the dishwasher. I wouldn’t do it in public though due to the pearl clutching demonstrated on here. Personally I’d rather have my dogs saliva in my mouth than that of the many, many random strangers who’ve used that crockery & cutlery before.

Salvadoridory · 27/01/2026 04:23

Never used to bother me until I got Mrs Catshiteater now I am very anti.

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2026 05:48

I do it at home but certainly would not do it at a pub or restaurant.
