Dogs Licking Plates

Goldengirl123 · 26/01/2026 08:50

We were in a pub and there was a large group of people near us. One of the men didn’t finish his meal so he got the plate and gave it to his dog to finish. One of his mates said that was terrible but he couldn’t see why as the plate would be going in the dishwasher. I was disgusted

If the guys wants to do that with his own plates at home that’s his choice. But in a restaurant? Eww no not appropriate

WatalotIgot · 26/01/2026 17:20

Dogs carry germs and bacteria that stay on everything even after washing/sterilising. People can and do get very sick from this, the figures are not published as it is very difficult to diagnose. It is particularly bad if someone is immunocompromised by having chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressant drugs (transplanted organs etc).

Also, patients get very sick in hospital when people do not wash their hands properly after using the toilets. It is not hygienic just to run your fingers under the tap, you must use soap, water and dry your hands properly. I saw lots of this when recovering from an operation and undergoing chemo in hospital.

JustChillin70 · 26/01/2026 17:21

Hygiene wise it doesn’t bother me in the slightest and we’ll happily use any piece of cutlery for dog food. Wouldn’t do it with my own dog but only because I don’t want him to start begging for food at the table and think it’s acceptable to take food off a plate.

Gross

Dogs do not carry some sort of super bacteria that sterilising does not kill.
How convenient that there are no figures to back up your claim.

gamerchick · 26/01/2026 17:48

I think it all boils down to whether you care if people think you're minging or not. People who watch you allow your dogs lick plates, will absolutely judge you for it. Whether they say anything or not.

If you do it and have made your peace with that, then it's all.cool. no point on arguing about it.

"Dogs carry germs and bacteria that stay on everything even after washing/sterilising"

Where did you get that from? Source?

I would be disgusted too.

I have a family member with 4 dogs. After each meal, as she loads the dishwasher, she allows the dogs free range to lick any plates and cutlery, as well as anything else already in there. I find it disgusting. Is this normal for dog owners?

Saves having to ever check and clean the dishwasher filter!!

SlashBeef · 26/01/2026 18:04

Our dog "pre cleans" while we do the dishwasher. I've noticed we do a lot of "grim" things by MN standards and yet I couldn't tell you the last time anyone here was unwell with sickness or diarrhea. I feel like a walking miracle.
I wouldn't allow the dog to do it in a restaurant though. Not very good etiquette.

ResusciAnnie · 26/01/2026 18:06

Agree it’s revolting. My mum used to let her dog ‘lick out’ (ugh, even that phrasing…! 🤢) her empty yoghurt pots and it was utterly foul. Eurgh. Dog bowl in the dishwasher makes my stomach turn too tbh. But then, I’m not a dog person in the slightest.

Emmz1510 · 26/01/2026 18:09

Urgh watching and listening to a dog licking, slurping and slobbering over a plate would be enough to make me leave and never come back.

SpanielLover356 · 26/01/2026 18:14

Had dogs all my life. My sister (also a dog owner) teases me that I don't allow my dogs to 'kiss' (eg: lick my face) me - she will get my dogs to 'kiss' 'Auntie' & say that 'mummy's a meanie' because I won't allow it. I point out that they lick their backsides & does she REALLY want that in her face? My sister also allows her dogs to lick plates & will feed them while she's eating. As a result her dogs sit there watching you, salivating while you're eating waiting for you to give them something. My sister will point this out saying that <dog name> wants some biscuit or 'you're surely going to leave some sausage for <dog name>?' I hate it.

My dogs don't beg because they've never been fed while we're eating. My (toddler) GC can walk around the room with a biscuit in their hand (if I allowed it, which I don't) & I know that my dogs will take no notice. My sister's dogs would have the biscuit off them. My dogs don't expect to lick plates because they've never been given plates to lick.

Dogs are not 'fur babies' they are domesticated pack animals and feel happiest when they know that their humans are the pack leaders & are in charge.

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/01/2026 18:16

Good to know all the arse clenchers would leave us happy, healthy, haven't had sickness/diarrhoea in years (might be decades, actually, now I think about it) plate licking dog owners to get on with our sickness free lives. But thanks for the laughs you frothers are giving me. 👍 😁

MindYourUsage · 26/01/2026 18:22

I allow this at home, if the meal was dog friendly and I have finished, but it is poor form anywhere else that is not your environment.

My dog's food bowls also go in the dishwasher so I dont see that is makes any difference.

RazedBeds · 26/01/2026 18:26

Yeah, we let our dog finish food at home (wouldn't in a restaurant). We have a dishwasher but in any case exposure to doggy germs is good for the human immune system.

Spring cleaning? Don’t get too carried away as the minuscule microbes that animals bring inside our homes can be good for us

Alittlefrustrated · 26/01/2026 18:30

Foul.
Fine in their own home if they want to (not in mine).
40 years ago , as a teen, I was doing the rounds of friends house on NYE, and couldn't believe my eyes when a friend's mam let her doberman have a drink from her wine glass 🤮I can still see the huge slobbery tongue circling through the glass.
We had a much loved dog at home too, but I'm afraid I still judged, and still do.

SpanielLover356 · 26/01/2026 18:41

I get the argument for and against.

I won't stop visiting my sister and enjoying a meal at her house just because her dogs lick her plates before going into the dishwasher - I love my sister and enjoy spending time in her company. I trust her dishwasher's high temperature will get rid of any doggy germs.

At the end of the day, some people are OK with dogs licking plates, some aren't.

I don't feed the dogs & have just checked with DH (who also tends to do the washing up) about if he puts the dog bowls in the dishwasher. He's said no because they're plastic & says not dishwasher-proof. 😀

TheCompactPussycat · 26/01/2026 18:42

DDog isn't allowed to lick the plates, although she is partial to helping to provide a pre-wash service in the dishwasher if you turn your back.

That said, a few years ago she helped a little too enthusiastically and pulled the whole bottom tray of the dishwasher out. After the stainless steel saucepans and stoneware plates had scattered to the four corners of our stone-floored kitchen, and she'd sent her stainless steel bowl spinning round and round on the floor whilst doing her best Scooby-Doo impression, she's always been a bit more wary of helping.

OtherS · 26/01/2026 18:56

No issue with it, and would do it at home, but wouldn't personally do it in public. At least not obviously! I would be extremely disgusted if I saw a human do it though, for some reason I find dogs a lot less revolting. Possibly because I've caught loads of diseases from humans, and not one from a dog.

Dgll · 26/01/2026 19:01

I am astonished by how many people do this. I have had dogs and I find this completely revolting.

chickenwings2 · 26/01/2026 19:06

Disgusting AF behaviour

MisiSam · 26/01/2026 19:09

Ewww gross. I have a cat and he always tries to lick the plate after I've had some buttery crumpets and I don't let him. He's probably no more germy than a dog as he doesn't go further than the garden but it's just disgusting. I'd feel just as bad seeing a human licking a plate 🤣 I hate it when the kids slurp the milk from the bowl after their cereal although I do allow this 🤣

MasterBeth · 26/01/2026 19:11

It's revolting but not unhygienic.

Plates get washed.
