Dogs Licking Plates

We were in a pub and there was a large group of people near us. One of the men didn’t finish his meal so he got the plate and gave it to his dog to finish. One of his mates said that was terrible but he couldn’t see why as the plate would be going in the dishwasher. I was disgusted

The number of dogs around pisses me off, I have a dog allergy, and they are all over, HOWEVER I can’t say this bothers me, the pot washes are ridiculously hot in restaurants, and you are more likely to pick something up from the last human to use the table.

Setyoufree · 26/01/2026 12:35

This assumption that dishwashers sterilise, I don't think they do - my dishwasher says it washes normally at 50°. I'd have to select 'intensive' to get to 70°. Even that isn't "boiling" as per previous posts.

I'm a dog person and I think it's absolutely minging when dogs are allowed to lick plates. My dogs bowls are rinsed out with boiling water before going in the dishwasher, same with my cats.

If you read the context of my original post you would know that is exactly what I was saying.

No, servers don't unfold a napkin, but neither are diners diligent about keeping all their germs in the folded up bit of the napkin.

You do know that not all dogs slobber don't you?

If a dog licks a plate, it’s getting slobber on the plate. People are welcome to let their dogs do gross things in their own house, just keep it out of people’s businesses and public eating establishments is all.

They dont have to be sterile, life and humans are not sterile.

PluckyChancer · 26/01/2026 13:01

I don’t see the issue if the plates go on a hot wash in a dishwasher.

However, in my view, dogs shouldn’t be in pubs or restaurants at all unless they’re service dogs and I doubt service dogs would be allowed to lick the plate clean.

Our pets have their own bowls and we use the normal cutlery to chop up their food. Everything goes in the dishwasher afterwards.

And if a person uses a fork they're getting slobber on the fork. The same fork numerous other people will be putting in their mouths, possibly the one you'll put in your mouth.

Springflowersyay · 26/01/2026 13:23

I don’t know…… these are dishes that have been used over and over my many humans. Some with rotten teeth, cold sores, gum disease, illness, hepatitis, etc etc.

dogs licking a plate are fine when you view it this way.

Monty34 · 26/01/2026 13:32

It is revolting. He might not be bothered but it is not his personal plate. And he has no idea how it will be washed. By hand, dishwasher or what temperature nor how long. Or how clean it will really be.

The dog owner may not know perhaps if his dog has any parasites. Nor if the next customer to use the plate is immune compromised, vulnerable, very young or old.

I would have told the restaurant/pub. Revolting behaviour.

YeOldeGreyhound · 26/01/2026 13:35

It would not bother me to see that, but I would not have let my dog lick plates in a café or restaurant. She used to at home though.

Twolargewatersplease · 26/01/2026 13:44

TheKeatingFive · 26/01/2026 11:16

Sure, but there's no anecdotal/circumstantial evidence either.

Humans don't live in sterile environments, nor should they.

Fine to not like the idea of it, but there's really nothing concrete to suggest it's harmful.

This is exactly what I mean. No reason behind the whole thing other than
'Because Eeeeeeewww!!!'

Which I find puerile and ignorant. Humans potentially carry as much filth as the next not-too-dissimilar animal, we just like to think we don't for some reason.

Slobber = having saliva dripping copiously from the mouth. Not all dogs do this.

You don't mean slobber, you mean saliva.

Ok?

explanationplease · 26/01/2026 14:14

I hope the people who do it use the
dishwash at high temperatures!

mindutopia · 26/01/2026 14:14

I couldn’t get worked up about that. I mean, I wouldn’t do it personally because it feels a bit grim to feed the dog in the pub, less because of the plate.

But our dog comes to lick the plates as we stack them in the dishwasher every night (unless it’s something she shouldn’t eat). Her bowls are actually just enamel snack bowls that we have a whole set of (because we used to manufacture and sell them). We use them as dog food and water bowls, but because we have like 10, they cycle through normal household use. For example, as popcorn bowls if we’re watching a film. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They’re washed and not dirty, so it’s fine.

I have a friend who used to sterilise her moon cup in a coffee mug each month and then put that cup back into circulation for her partner and guests to use. 😂 That freaks me out a little, but not so bothered by the dog.

staringatthesun · 26/01/2026 14:17

It's rank, I hate when you have dinner at someone's house and they do this, it puts me off eating there again, and I'm a dog owner.

notmoredirtywashing · 26/01/2026 15:36

I’m a dog owner (lab) and as a pp said if you let the dog eat off the plate they would feel it’s fair game to nick food off a plate. I won’t tolerate that.
I don’t have a dishwasher and I don’t want my dog’s manky mouth near my food 🤮

PorpoiseWithPurpose · 26/01/2026 11:44

My dog licks the plates once they're loaded into the dishwasher.

She's the pre-wash function.

We joke that the dishes look so clean after our whippet has finished with them, we can put them straight back into the cupboard. 😁

HangingOver · 26/01/2026 16:08

I read from someone on here that before they shut the dishwasher door they go "Housekeeping!" And Ddog appears to lick any remaining gravy off the plates. It's stuck in our house 😂

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/01/2026 16:11

@gamerchick

"My parents had friends who used to let their dogs do this. Except the plates were deemed clean and put back in the cupboard."

Nooo! I've just made that joke too. The dishes go into the dishwasher at 65°C afterwards. Are you sure your DP's friends weren't pulling their legs too? I can't imagine anyone actually doing that. 🤷‍♀️

Newbie8918 · 26/01/2026 16:14

Never in a restaurant. I have a collapsible dog bowl with me for water and if it’s something I can’t bear to bin (half a steak) I’d put it in the bowl and actually feed her outside.
In a my own home and her bowl isn’t available. I’ve fed her off a plate. My dishwasher does a 90 wash so no one is dying.

Lots of people are allergic to tree pollen etc, should we reduce their numbers too?

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 26/01/2026 08:55

I would do it in my own home but poor form to do it in a restaurant or someone else’s home.

This. We always do it at home. Share the love.

SpanielsGalore · 26/01/2026 16:47

My dogs lick my plates as I load the dishwasher.

No way would I let them lick plates belonging to someone else.

Sally2791 · 26/01/2026 16:50

I imagine most people put their dog bowls through the dishwasher? I don’t see it as worse than human saliva on plates and cutlery.

Eggsandavocado · 26/01/2026 16:53

My dogs aren’t even allowed in the kitchen let alone licking plates …. And I’m an extremely doggy person, I just have standards !
