DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

We don't have penguins, we did as a child but I never really liked them. Sure I read on another thread that they don't count as chocolate anymore but the Lidl/Aldi versions do. Maybe you should get these instead for your buffet? Or is it the packaging DH likes.

AgathaX · 18/01/2026 19:04

I didn't know they even still made them.

This must be a wind up?

Moveoverdarlin · 18/01/2026 19:04

I always have penguins in, yes. I’d possibly put them out for kids if we were having tea / coffee and biscuits.

But I would not put them out as part of a bloody buffet. Well I would if it was a kids party.

Iamgratefulreally · 18/01/2026 19:04

What a pervert

Sminty2 · 18/01/2026 19:05

I don’t like Penguin biscuits either but once every year or so, I will lavish some cash on a packet of Tim Tams, and dream of still living in Sydney.

You should buy some Tim Tams and offer him one every evening, because a) it’s annoying and b) they really are nicer.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 18/01/2026 19:05

I'd find it very hard to give a shit about this, OP. Choose your battles.

Zoraflora · 18/01/2026 19:05

Your post nade me laugh!

i think a penguin plate will be very retro for the party.

I havent had a penguin in years will have to get some next time Im getting food shop.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 18/01/2026 19:05

Our kids have cow’s milk allergy (epi pen carrying) so no penguins here. Don’t think I’ve had one since I left home. But reading this thread made crave one!

It is am unsophisticated biscuit though, you’re not wrong.

BruhWhy · 18/01/2026 19:05

This has killed me, OP YABU you unpatriotic penguin hater 😂

Tell your DH my local Asda had hundreds of packets reduced to 45p each a few months ago. Still reeling from it. Got a couple packets left actually, great for lunchboxes.

Tunnockswafer · 18/01/2026 19:06

Well I feel the same about tunnocks wafers, so I can see where he's coming from.

MammaBear1 · 18/01/2026 19:07

I don’t have any in but now I want some! I feel nostalgic. We used to have these regularly when we were kids.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 18/01/2026 19:07

I don’t like them but this sounds very very sweet. Especially standing up at 8pm every day and offering you one. Couldn’t you just indulge him occasionally? He sounds like he would be happy.

The kids birthday party in particular sounds lovely, and like the kind of thing she will remind when he is dead and gone.

TheDenimPoet · 18/01/2026 19:08

HopSpringsEternal · 18/01/2026 17:46

I mean we never have real penguins that would be really posh.We have Arctic bars a la Aldi.
The 8pm stand up and Penguin? Would drive me insane though so yanbu about that!

Aldi Penguins are called Seals..

Evidemment · 18/01/2026 19:09

Honestly this reads like he's been raised in some unhinged social experiment where his mum has told him p-p-porkies and said this is normal and standard to make HER feel better about HER Penguin Problem because obviously the rest of the country doesn't have the same essentials list..

Milk
Bread
Loo roll
Penguins
Coffee

Its like his mum has shown up and you've no tea bags. Expecting people to have penguins in and up for offer is bizarre😂

Scorpion84 · 18/01/2026 19:10

I hope they still have them in Asda in different colours , my Nan always had some in a special tin so I need some now for nostalgia purposes

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 18/01/2026 19:10

I used to love Penguins but like so many things they have need ruined by cost cutting, new manufacturing methods and disgusting slimy palm oil.

That being said, if your husband and his family still enjoy them you are being snobby and unpleasant to refuse to serve them at a family party. You are not the official food police!

BeenChangedForGood · 18/01/2026 18:35

Sorry @BettyWhittaker but this made me laugh 🤣🤣 I suppose there are worse things than a penguin but it would annoy me too 🤣

My DH and I had a falling out the other day because I lost my shit over him asking me if I wanted a cup of tea 🤣🫠 15 years together - he knows I don’t like hot drinks - he still asks me daily if I want a tea 🫠 We’ve had the discussion 100x with me telling him that I’ll ask if I ever want one. But he says he feels rude if he doesn’t ask 🫠 Id had a bad day the other day and his tea offer tipped me over the edge 🤣

The first thing my husband says to me is not good morning, it’s “cup of tea”. Really, I have only just opened my eyes. Every single day, no matter what I say.

Figgygal · 18/01/2026 19:13

They're tiny and just bourbons covered in chocolate
They're rubbish in the biscuit hierarchy

Jackiepumpkinhead · 18/01/2026 19:14

Sometimes had these as children, along with Clubs, Rocky bars etc. Not a fan.

Imagine my dismay when travelling Australia and looking forward to trying a Tim Tam, they are just bloody Penguins, albeit a smidge nicer. I like to do the tea trick with a Twix, delicious.

Zillyzillyzillymouse · 18/01/2026 19:15

I bloody love a Penguin. 🐧

Pedallleur · 18/01/2026 19:15

If that's the worst thing he does give him a break. Read some of the threads and husband being enthusiastic about a biscuit would be fantastic for partners of some of the lunatics we read about

RedRoss86 · 18/01/2026 19:16

Came here to see if he was obsessed with penguin bars or penguin birds.

I really don’t see the issue, we love having small chocolate bars in the house (as well as a variety of biscuits).
penguins, clubs, KitKats, or the ABSOLUTE ELITE - The Gold Club 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

LadyKenya · 18/01/2026 19:16

BleeBlahBlue · 18/01/2026 17:48

Have you bought him a packet of TimTams yet? Same idea as penguins just taste better 🤣

This.

Primaris · 18/01/2026 19:16

Bubobubo · 18/01/2026 17:44

I don't believe every household has a packet of penguins in.

Have you ever tried biting both the ends off and drinking a hot drink through it. Could that open your mind to enjoying an 8pm penguin once in a while?

Best with coffee imo, tea is too bland and hot choc too sweet.
Bite off the opposite corners, and eat it as soon as you taste the coffee, because if you hesitate you get a gloopy mess landing in your coffee.

I don’t think you can be qualified to comment on penguins until you’ve tried them this way.

PepsiBook · 18/01/2026 19:17

Our house ALWAYS has at least one flavour of penguins in!
