DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Sounds fine to me to have them at a kid's party.

Chocolate biscuits sandwiched together with chocolate cream & with a chocolate flavour coating!

Haven't had one for years.

We didn't regularly have them in the house & no one I knew did either.

Are they any good now that it's no longer a chocolate coating?

SexRealistic · 18/01/2026 18:55

LTB

Nothing else for it 🤣

HopeForTheBest · 18/01/2026 18:56

I don't live in the UK any more; I brought penguins back last time I was over and my kids loved them!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 18/01/2026 18:56

Aren't they the ' chocolate ' covered biscuit that is no longer chocolate !!! and they are now chocolate flavoured.

I will never buy another one again as a result, tho I admit I only rarely ever bought them.

If I want a chocolate biscuit it would be a kit kat.

lcakethereforeIam · 18/01/2026 18:57

None in the house atm. I'm always up for trying one of the new editions that they bring out from time to time. Using them as a straw for drinking your tea is sublime.

Re. the party, have you thought of inviting a nun?

DoveTurtle · 18/01/2026 18:57

I’m genuinely upset this thread isn’t about the bird. If someone has a husband how does like the bird could you post about it please?

Rainbowralph · 18/01/2026 18:59

I haven’t had a penguin for about 30 years, really want one now!

DontStopMe · 18/01/2026 18:59

I've got a copy of The Penguin Book of Penguins. Not read it yet, but it appears to be about the birds, not the biscuits.

Does he make you sit and listen to the little joke in each wrapper ? 😂

Yes he tries, I just ignore him now

We don't always have Penguins in the snack box but I probably get them once a month.

I have to say I was quite disappointed to find this was about chocolate biscuits and not actual penguins... My DD (31) is slightly obsessed with guinguins (as she called them aged around 3 and it's stuck 😂) and I was hoping I'd found her a kindred spirit.

RedToothBrush · 18/01/2026 19:00

Your husband is living in a time warp.

Penguins used to be far more popular. They were the thing in the 80s and 90s when I was growing up.

I can honestly say I've not had one in decades nor have I seen them lurking in childrens lunch boxes or at any friends in any recent times.

He needs to get with the times.

Far from you being a snob about the party, you are trying not to make him look like a dinosaur.

Shinyandnew1 · 18/01/2026 19:00

He says every British household has a packet of penguins in

Ha ha, not here! I don't think I have ever bought a packet.

I do like a Tunnocks wafer or a Kit Kat, though.

Shedeboodinia · 18/01/2026 19:01

They are really nice though. Be thankful this is is vice, it could be so much worse 😂
Can you get in some other chocolate biscuits and see if he can be weaned off the penguins? Or do you think he could need to go cold penguin??

shuffleofftobuffalo · 18/01/2026 19:01

That’s really made me chuckle OP!

I can confirm though that not every British household has a pack of penguins. We have never had penguins, and neither did my parents when we were growing up or after we’d left home. None of my friends have penguins either.

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 18/01/2026 19:01

No Penguins here OP (I'm GF) but my sister goes on about them too, always has her evening Penguin so much so we had plate for her birthday (60th) so no I don't think a plate at a party would be tacky. I think this thread is hilarious and your husband sounds great fun. I'd definitely look into buying him a Penguin hat or PJs 🤣🤣

APatternGrammar · 18/01/2026 19:01

I’ve never known an adult who eats Penguins. Surely they go in kids lunchboxes because they don’t have a choice. Nobody sane with access to a full range of biscuits would p p pick them.

Dc Comics Batman GIF by HBO Max

Have you tried doing this?

NannyOgg1341 · 18/01/2026 19:02

This is hilarious! Tbh we usually have a p..p...p...packet in the fridge

Newsenmum · 18/01/2026 19:02

for some reason this has really tickled me. Does he have any other oddities?

I am disappointed it’s not the birds though.

britneyisfreebutnotokay · 18/01/2026 19:02

We once did a taste test to compare Penguins and Puffins (Asda own brand) we took it very seriously.

However, I’ve never brought them since leaving home 20 odd years ago and as I’m now gluten free I can’t run out and p p p pick a penguin, despite this thread making me really want one!!

Also stop whinging about it. You’ve clearly been married to him for donkeys and he hasn’t changed. Could be worse - could be crack!

Paveparadiseputupaparkinglot · 18/01/2026 19:02

I think it’s really funny but a bit weird he’s so obsessed! Funnily enough my son’s friend was given one on Friday after school by his dad and my son asked why he didn’t have a penguin! I do try not to take chocolate after school and he gets a flapjack or similar which hasn’t got so much sugar etc but I did feel guilty and decided I’d get some penguins so he can at least have one on a Friday after school!

we were never allowed names things like penguins as a child! It was always the shop own brand!

Moveoverdarlin · 18/01/2026 19:03

HopSpringsEternal · 18/01/2026 17:46

I mean we never have real penguins that would be really posh.We have Arctic bars a la Aldi.
The 8pm stand up and Penguin? Would drive me insane though so yanbu about that!

Aldi penguins are called Seals.

ilovepixie · 18/01/2026 19:03

I hate penguins, the biscuits, love the birds though.

Flowerlovinglady · 18/01/2026 19:03

You beat me to it!

Newsenmum · 18/01/2026 19:04

Dolamroth · 18/01/2026 17:47

I'd rather have a breakaway or a kit kat. My mum thought Penguins were common (the biscuits not the birds) so we weren't allowed them.

The things people find common 😁
