DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

We got some Tim Tams in Lidl last summer. They were much better than Penguins, even though essentially the same thing.

lilkitten · 22/01/2026 12:09

We do sometimes, but we're more into Clubs. That's definitely a nostalgia trip for me though. I don't think they do Trios anymore, which was my favourite. DD always wants an orange Club in her lunchbox

On the advice of this thread I ordered a pack of tim tams from morrisons and they were just delivered. Naturally I tucked into one immediately. I have to say both me and my partner were extremely unimpressed. The just tasted like a sweeter version of penguins but twice the price. My biggest mumsnet disappointment to date. Team penguin 🐧

Agreed, they’re shit. Don’t get the hype.

I think there should be a support group for things like this.

I hear non stop about these bloody timtams and how good they are and I think I had one at work in great anticipation.

Didnt like it

Was upset.

Tunnockswafer · 23/01/2026 17:53

Chocolate covered bourbons taste the way you want a penguin to taste.
though cost twice as much!

I had Tim Tams in Oz before they were widespread over here, and was underwhelmed. They seem to have a minor cult following though. A bit like Heinz beans, loved by expat Brits not for quality but nostalgia. So sugary they're almost confectionery too.

What a dick . . .

Catdaddy1978 · 24/01/2026 19:18

I don’t think I’ve p p p p picked up a penguin in years! Much prefer a custard cream, a Viscount or a chocolate digestive. Maybe for Valentine’s you could dress up as a Penguin bar, tell him this is what his obsession looks like.

Katie0909 · 24/01/2026 20:17

No Penguins in our house - I think they're the dullest biscuits. I hate Bourbons too so I was blown away when I found out that Penguins are just Bourbons with a chocolate coating!

grumpygrape · 24/01/2026 20:36

Well, I had Dark Chocolate Timtams and Border Dark Chocolate and Ginger Bars delivered this last week.My main problem is I have to keep having one of each to see which is best. Borders Dark Chocolate and Ginger Bars are in the lead but they are more expensive….

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/01/2026 21:08

I have tried TimTams, after ds2, who lives in Australia now, sang their praises, and I do think they are a bit nicer than Penguins.

The biscuit that I feel has an entirely undeserved reputation for deliciousness is the Oreo. It looks as if it should be richly chocolate-y, but tastes of nothing but disappointment.

Jdh172 · 24/01/2026 23:19

Aw he sounds hilarious and sweet. Leave him and his penguin quirk alone 😂🐧

BluesBird19764 · 25/01/2026 09:31

Love the birds hate the biscuits. Nasty, waxy chocolate. That said if DH loves them is it really a big deal? You ABU.

I really like Tim tams, fortunately, my local shops don’t sell them otherwise I would be walking like a penguin with such a fat stomach.

Yes I lived in Brisbane for a while, I can't say Tim Tams tasted that different to Penguins to me. Vegemite did taste different to Marmite though (I'm team Marmite, but I live down the road from the factory so it's kind of the thing to love it here)

FuriousInventions · 25/01/2026 17:37

I remember an AMA thread from a couple of years ago where the OP had served time in prison, she said they were all given a Penguin with their lunch every day and she hadn’t been able to eat one since she was released.

I’m more a Wagon Wheel fan personally, but it’s not often I get one as the kids descend like vultures the second the packet enters the house 😭

Kokonimater · 25/01/2026 21:34

I think you need to ask yourself what are you really angry with him about? It sounds like you are angry with him and maybe projecting this all onto the penguins.

Crying laughing at this post 😂 my advice would be to introduce new alternatives... A rocky, a rocky caramel, a club bar, a gold bar... Maybe a viscount. This guy needs to broaden his horizons! Even if it just changes the script slightly, it may save your marriage by the sounds of it! Maybe treat yourselves to a biscuit tin and at 7:55 say "I know what your going to say!" And go and get the new tin with all the different options. I'd ration him to one penguin bar per barrel a week just out of spite at this point to be honest! Thankyou for sharing this truly brightened up my day 😅

Leave the man and his pensions alone

Tunnockswafer · 27/01/2026 11:58

Penguins!!! Not pensions 😂😂

Tim Tams are far too sweet these days. I seem to remember them being less sweet and somehow richer, but that might be my imagination.

It's usually the case that Oz equivalents are less sweet than the overly sweet English things, but Tim Tams seem to be an exception.
