DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

We always had them when I was a kid70/s/80s - in the snack drawer and everyday in our packed lunch- either that or a mint club.
I got sick of them and when Gold bars came out and mini Kit Kats.
I came to resent the Penguin bar if I’m honest as the above looked more appealing in my friends lunch boxes as did the Mr Kipling 2 bar packs - besides myself with jealousy when they arrived circa ‘91
We keep in the drawer at home now (adults kids and us) the Aldi fake ‘Seal’ Bars , Rocky Bars and the fake Twix- ‘Trigger bars! is it ?

Your DH song and dance every night and the Penguins apparent integral role in his life would give me serious minge-cringe tho!

Has he started the ritual yet or have still got half an hour to go? T

Ihavelostthegame · 18/01/2026 19:17

They are on offer in ASDA you say. Off to Asda tomorrow morning to replenish my supply of penguin biscuits

YABU I love a penguin or 2 team DH here!

Strawberry53 · 18/01/2026 19:17

😂😂 I don’t often have a packet of penguins in but by coincidence I do at the moment… might pop the kettle on now you mention it…

NotThatSerious · 18/01/2026 19:18

I only tried a penguin for the first time the other day as we got a pack as a substitute in the food shop. They are actually pretty good but his obsession is wild 🤣

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/01/2026 19:18

"No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me."
And that's where the irritation really lies - not with the biscuits, but with him not listening.

I can remember having penguin biscuits as a child, but as a household we preferred KitKats and orange Club. Haven't had one for decades, they're never in the house. They're all right.

Anyusernamewilldo8963 · 18/01/2026 19:19

I enjoy the odd penguin but don't currently have any in the house and I can't remember the last time I had one? Added to the shopping list for tomorrow though thanks @BettyWhittaker lol

AleaEim · 18/01/2026 19:20

Yuck, penguins are rank.

Lardychops · 18/01/2026 19:20

A plate of wrapped penguins at a family do is one of the most working class things I’ve ever read on here -akin to bread n marg on a table with a roast and I love it xxx

pippapipps · 18/01/2026 19:21

Omg the fucking penguins dh loves them and there's always a packet of penguins on the go in the fridge..tbh I thought he must be the only one buying them they seem so outdated to me..I've never tried one neither have the kids....bloody penguins bane of my life as it is yours 😳🤣

amusedbush · 18/01/2026 19:21

My granny had a novelty Penguin igloo-shaped biscuit box in the 90s. She kept it for years and always refilled it with Penguins, Clubs and Blue Ribands.

I have a massive sweet tooth but I’m not really a fan of biscuits. Penguins are particularly crap though, and it would make sense if they really are just Bourbons because those are rotten too 🤢

zanahoria · 18/01/2026 19:23

Divorce him

Cloudyonasunnyday · 18/01/2026 19:23

This really made me laugh so thank you YANBU

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 19:23

Maybe I’m a bit bitter - as a kid I always had a penguin in my packed lunch box but my friend had gold bars. I always thought her family must be loaded 😂

In answer to your question, no we don't have them in. But I am now pondering why not?
Adds to shopping list.....

Teddy589 · 18/01/2026 19:24

The 8pm penguin call would really annoy me op. Actually a pack of penguins materialised in the house over Christmas (not sure where
from). I used to love them but as a pp said, the quality has really gone down now. I’d try to move your DH on to the chocolate
round biscuits from M&S, they’re lovely and would fit in at the party.

Gahr · 18/01/2026 19:25

YANBU. Penguins are rank, I didn't like them even as a kid.

Flailingaroundatlife · 18/01/2026 19:25

Never bought a packet in my life!

Do they still do that little joke on them??

QuickPeachPoet · 18/01/2026 19:26

You've p p p p p p picked a great DH there

Dolphinnoises · 18/01/2026 19:26

Buy some Tim Tams just to mess with him. They’re also much nicer!

Teddy589 · 18/01/2026 19:26

Also does MN still do its classics section? This thread should be there! 🐧

TheGoodOnesAreAllGone · 18/01/2026 19:27

Penguins are one of the worst biscuits, would always opt for a kit kat or Club instead. My husband likes the mint ones though so we occasionally have a packet in the house

Marmite27 · 18/01/2026 19:28

Newsenmum · 18/01/2026 19:04

The things people find common 😁

Breakaways have been discontinued Sad

OnlyFannys · 18/01/2026 19:28

I love a penguin, recently been buying them every week but the orange flavour ones. I go through phases with chocolate at the moment orange penguins and tunnocks tea cakes are my mini obsession

Sounds sweet tbh
You'd be more pissed off if it was Ferraro Rodgers, it would cost a bomb.

Ferro · 18/01/2026 19:28

They are common, to be fair. If I saw a plate of Penguins I’d assume I was among people who blow on their tea and watch commercial television.
