DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

This has really made me laugh. I love don’t have a packet in! I don’t like them. This would wind me up as well 😂

RoseThorne · 20/01/2026 17:48

Why don't you get creative with your evening meal . Just add a 🐧 to every dish. 🐧 omelette, 🐧 pizza or what about 🐧 lasagne or 🐧 in onion gravy n mash. You'll have fun 😊

ADayInTheLifeOfMe · 18/01/2026 17:44

I did buy a pack when I saw they where £1 at asda actually 😅

You know why they’re £1 at Asda don’t you?
they are NO LONGER COVERED IN REAL CHOCOLATE as are (or are not) McVities Clubs.

Tell DH they’re now covered in shit and find some decent biscuits.

OnlyFannys · 18/01/2026 19:28

I love a penguin, recently been buying them every week but the orange flavour ones. I go through phases with chocolate at the moment orange penguins and tunnocks tea cakes are my mini obsession

Penguins ARE NOT chocolate anymore.

Rett63 · 20/01/2026 20:06

The ‘penguin’? Question every evening would actually do my head in, especially after asking him to stop! I would’ve blown a gasket years ago!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/01/2026 20:12

This is very niche!

No, not every British household has penguins in.

They’re just one amongst many brands of “chocolate” biscuit type bars that some people like and some don’t, but I wouldn’t say they had any special place in British life over and above, say, clubs or kitkats or whatever. Or even biscuit biscuits. People have what they like, surely? We don’t always have any kind of biscuit or bar “in”.

His and MILs assumption that they are some kind of staple would annoy me too quite frankly.

By all means buy them if you like them (in the DH’s case) but don’t go on and on about them, or act like they’re a staple food.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 20/01/2026 20:13

I bought some today, they don't taste as nice as they used to and the 'chocolate' coating isn't as thick.

Another childhood favourite gone down the pan.

The jokes are still as crap as ever mind you😂

Bumcake · 19/01/2026 18:23

You probably read that on this very thread

I came back from Aldi today with a pack of Seals, I’ve never even seen them before so this thread is definitely to blame. I shall you in the 8pm club.

I read it on the news about a fortnight ago.

grumpygrape · 20/01/2026 20:58

This blasted thread .... Not only have I ordered Timtams but today had to update my Ocado order and somehow some Borders Dark Chocolate Ginger Bars appeared in my basket.

The nasty, wicked, evil, Mumsnetters made me do it... 😭

They can tell you but they’d be lying 🤥. I’m in Britain and there’s no penguins in my cupboard.

I’m not a snob but unless the party you are having is purely for kids then I’d say a plate of penguins is tacky.

TBH what’s all the hubbub? They don’t even taste that nice. Introduce your DH to new bars of chocolate and tell him to get a life!

Climbingrosexx · 20/01/2026 21:22

We don't have penguins in but thinking about it they would come in handy in the evening when I am feeling a bit peckish usually around 8pm 😂

On a serious note though I'm surprised he hasn't moved on from penguins, after 30yrs of them I'd be looking for a new snack

Marble10 · 20/01/2026 21:33

Its Amazing how a £1 offer can make so many people buy something 😆
I’ve also purchased a few £1 packets at sainsburys. I wouldn’t dream of buying them if they weren’t on offer though!

baorhausfrau · 20/01/2026 22:20

I'm in Canada and we have Penguins in the pantry.

A Scots German household and our youngest son love Penguins and Fox's Party Rings. He even has them in his barracks room.

pollymere · 20/01/2026 23:25

I saw CARAMEL Penguins in B&M! Let me know whether he's tried them. I'm a big fan of the Mint Ones. We currently have two packets of those in the house. The ASDA offer sounds great. I'm tempted to send DH to get orange and/or Caramel ones... Weirdly I rarely eat the regular ones anymore.

grumpygrape · 21/01/2026 09:03

Every day is a school day. I didn’t even know there were different flavours of Penguins until this thread.

Tamtim · 21/01/2026 09:19

I suggest you go to the supermarket and purchase a packet of Australia’s far superior version, the Tim Tam. In doing so, you can start an all out war with DH and his weird family, by proclaiming the Tim Tam better than the Penguin. Good luck.

zingally · 21/01/2026 10:21

This did make me laugh!

Growing up, I'd say Penguins were the second most common biscuit mum would buy, after Kitkats, which are far superior imo.

I haven't had a Penguin in probably 3-5 years. Not opposed to them, I'd just rather have a Kitkat, which I buy fairly often.

Yeah I am sure that kitkats are superior to penguins for the “basic wrapped cheap chocolate biscuit” category, and I’d been prioritising clubs and kitkats for the kids when wanted, but I asked them to check and turns out they all think penguins are better! They’re wrong, but hey ho, they can have what they want!

Zerosleep · 21/01/2026 14:41

I hate the chocolate penguins and I think it’s very fucking weird, I never have any in and I don’t know why every UK household would have. They are fucking weird. If I were you I would give him Penguin multipacks for every present, birthday, Christmas and valentines.

Fcs1985 · 21/01/2026 20:01

I don't have a pack of penguins in, if I asked 3 days ago we had a pack, (can't stand them myself but kids love em) but I have just ordered a pack for pack ups. Ps of you want to get in his good books, Iceland have them at 75p a pack ATM 😂 😂

Jack80 · 21/01/2026 20:55

I like clubs but don't like them all the time and don't always have biscuits in. Leave them to it if they are happy but say you don't like them then he or they may not mention it.

I've been vegan for 12 years and I really miss penguins

Dip a bourbon biscuit into some melted vegan chocolate and it'd probably be better than today's Penguins.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/01/2026 08:27

We occasionally have penguins in for packed lunches. I probably would have got a few packs in if there were £1.

Have you noticed that the coating is now “chocolate flavour” rather than actual chocolate because they are not cocoa-ey enough anymore? That puts me off a bit. They used to be a real treat in the 70s when I was growing up.
