DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

If her DH stops then what will happen to the quality of his dad jokes?

MissMarplesKnittingNeedles · 18/01/2026 18:40

Penguins were always disappointment in a crap wrapper.

AlexaAdventuress · 18/01/2026 18:41

I wonder what the OP expected people to say?

Thia is a huge red flag. He's being emotionally abusive. Contact Women's Aid. Leave the bastard. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. He's choosing Penguins over you. Have some self respect. The phrases simply trip off the tongue.

sparrowhawkhere · 18/01/2026 18:42

OP, Asda need to gift you lots of penguins after the free advertising they’re getting on here!

AlexaAdventuress · 18/01/2026 18:42

Oh, and another one: Maybe he's neurodiverse or on the autistic spectrum. Get him assessed.

Thirdtimeunlucky2025 · 18/01/2026 18:42

They were a staple in our house as a child but I changed to kitkats when I left home and now have Kind bars instead.

There are no Penguin biscuits in this house. Club Orange biscuits, on the other hand, yes, there is half a packet in the scran-tub.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 18/01/2026 18:44

Team DH. All the way.

Bringyourfoldingchair · 18/01/2026 18:44

Random fact. Bourbon creams are penguins that haven’t been dipped in chocolate.

GAJLY · 18/01/2026 18:46

I haven’t bought penguins in years! I think they’re horrible cheap chocolate bars, my kids tried them once and don’t like the either! So
no penguins here! Now a Kit Kat is delicious! 👌

shuggles · 18/01/2026 18:46

@BettyWhittaker DH sounds like a cool guy. I want to be his friend.

The only (slight) issue here is that he asks you if you want one, when he should already know that you don't eat them.

apricotdreams · 18/01/2026 18:47

Always in our house in the 70s and 80s. They were nicer when wrapped in foil that you had to unwrap. For some reason I didn’t like the red ones and there always were more red than blue and green. Havnt had one for years.

FlayOtters · 18/01/2026 18:48

you lost me when it turned out it was the biscuits.
Was really looking forward to stories of him blowing family savings on holidays to Antarctica and gently dropping fish into your mouth as foreplay.

inickedthisname · 18/01/2026 18:48

I don’t buy penguins, but if I went to a party and there was a plate of all different flavour penguins I wouldn’t think “that’s tacky as hell”, I’d probably just eat one because I haven’t had one in years.

I do find it funny that his mum said “what, no penguins in?” As if they’re like milk or bread in every house hold, but maybe that’s just because she would expect them in your house considering your DH’s fondness for them.

Mrscharlieeeee · 18/01/2026 18:48

Yes we currently have penguins and frequently do! We tend to just buy whatever is on offer, rotate between Kit Kats, clubs, penguins, caramel wafers and gold bars.

Barney16 · 18/01/2026 18:49

Just putting Penguins on my shopping list...

MissSookieStackhouse · 18/01/2026 18:49

What’s tacky about having a plate of chocolate biscuits at a kids party? What do you want? Pate de foie gras? I’d buy them on special offer too, good spot by your DH!

TripleBanana · 18/01/2026 18:49

I’m 8 months pregnant and I want a penguin now

AprilinPortugal · 18/01/2026 18:50

I have to say I always did have penguins in the house 30 years ago! I love them! In fact this has made me want to go and buy some tomorrow 😄

RickertyRocker · 18/01/2026 18:50

He should not ask you a question every day when you have asked him not to. His family shouldn't ask from a specific biscuit when they come to your house. It's a weird ritual, you don't need to participate.

100% get Aldi's own Seal biscuits instead.

JayJayj · 18/01/2026 18:51

I do now fancy a penguin 😂😂 definitely not something I’d have in though.

It would also grate on me being constantly asked something that the answer is known. If my husband asks me what I deem a stupid question I ask him to guess the answer 🤣🤣

DontStopMe · 18/01/2026 18:51

I don't have any penguins at the moment, but I do buy them occasionally. Right now I have some dark chocolate Tunnock's Tea Cakes.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 18/01/2026 18:53

In my childhood there were always Penguin and Club biscuits. Always.

They sadly don't taste the same now, the chocolate is greasy. So we don't have them.

Ellie56 · 18/01/2026 18:53

Nope. He's wrong. There have never been any penguins here in over 40 years of marriage.

I'm with you OP. They are horrid.

RaininSummer · 18/01/2026 18:54

I haven't bought penguins in around twenty years I think. Harmless obsession though.
