DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Haven't had penguins in over 20 years so he's definitely wrong about everyone having them in.

The asking 8pm every night shows an absolute lack of respect or interest in your tastes and I don't blame you being angry. If he can't even be bothered to remember basic likes and dislikes of yours, how much does he really care? Is there any food stuff he hates that you like that you can keep offering him every day until he realises how hurtful it is to not have your opinions taken into account?

UninitendedShark · 19/01/2026 21:42

They’re very mid-tier imo. I can’t remember the last time I had one.

Lambington · 19/01/2026 21:42

Just did the maths. Assuming a penguin is 8cm long, if your "D"H really does have a peguin every single night as the OP suggests, in a bit over 34 years hed have eaten a Kilometer of Penguin. That disturbs me.

A contender for Top Thread of 2026

Or an subtle advertisement

Fridgemanageress · 19/01/2026 21:52

Yes. We always have penguins and rocky bars and artic bears from Lidls in. They are good for a packed lunch which DH takes daily, the grandchildren love them too.

i must admit I do now fancy a glass of milk and an artic bear, and I’m dieting.

PersephoneSmith · 19/01/2026 21:53

I really dislike them, and surely I can’t be the only one?
Bourbons are nasty too, same type of thing I think.

Bourbons are disgusting. But penguins are delicious

Abd80 · 19/01/2026 21:54

absolutely hilarious !!

CaffeineAndChords · 19/01/2026 21:57

After eating these throughout my childhood as that’s all my parents use to buy, I am sick of the sight of the fucking things and do not have them in my cupboard!! This made me howl though!

Mum1822 · 19/01/2026 22:01

Gosh no, I haven’t had one since I was a child. We usually have chocolate coins for the kids and Tony’s for the adults though :)

LeopardPants · 19/01/2026 22:12

I bloody love a penguin. The orange ones are delish 😍

SL2924 · 19/01/2026 22:15

When I’m in a restaurant faced with getting a big dessert that will have a shit load of calories and won’t be worth it I often wish I could just have a penguin.

Aldi are definitely Seal bars. Never without a packet of knock off penguins here, but at 4pm with tea not 8pm 😆

Sorry I established it was a la Lidl. But we too have Seal bars!

If he bites off the top and bottom he can use it as a straw. You have to be quick though, too much and it disintegrates, just the right amount and it tastes like a brownie. Gooy, chocolatey loveliness!

Omg don't! I loved doing that as a kid! I don't know why I ever stopped to be honest 🤤

me, having bought 6 £1 packs of penguins ‘for dd’s packed lunches’

babyproblems · 19/01/2026 22:29

I honestly didn’t know they still made these 😂

used to buy them at the tuck shop at school. This would give me the ick. Not the occasional one but every night at 8pm like an old man.

Millowmallowsky · 19/01/2026 22:32

Omg i cracked out laughing this was so funny to read

celticprincess · 19/01/2026 22:46

This has made me chuckle. We currently have 2 packets in of orange and a packet of caramel. I shop in Sainsburys and only ever buy when they are on nectar price (usually more than £1 though) and when they go off nectar prices the clubs usually come on nectar prices so we rotate with whatever is on ‘offer’. But seems to have overbought recently.

They are nicer than their Australia counterparts - the timtam. I notice they’ve made an appearance on supermarket shelves too but dislike the fact they aren’t individually wrapped. And I don’t like Australia chocolate so haven’t tried the English timtams to see if they taste the same. Kids like them though.

Oopsadaisysgranny · 19/01/2026 22:50

I haven’t p p picked up a penguin in years !!! Don’t like the funny chocolate taste of them

RobynRB · 19/01/2026 23:13

Who knew there was a caramel penguin?

Regardless, I can't be arsed to read 30 pages of this but I bet someone's suggested he might be autistic or something...

RobynRB · 19/01/2026 23:25

Those who say they like orange Clubs should treat themselves to one of these from Marks.

DH’s penguin obsession
RainBow725 · 19/01/2026 23:26

I’ve not had a penguin since about 1983! Usually got Kitkats in though.

MissDoubleU · 19/01/2026 23:32

I have a penguin shaped penguin biscuit biscuit jar, which I got from a vintage fair. Always full of penguins, or clubs or golds if penguins aren’t on offer.

Yes you are being snobby to say he can’t out out a plate of his favourite biscuits for a party he is joint hosting. You can choose everything else and blame the penguins on him. It makes him happy, it’s such a small things so you’re weird to me any to deny him it.

McSpoot · 20/01/2026 00:17

As a non-Brit, I opened this thread to see what form the OP's husband's obsession with the black and white seabirds took. This thread took a very unexpected (to me) direction. I do know what the biscuit is (and have had them), but doesn't come to mind first.
