DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

That’s just so funny! 🤣
I hate penguins btw

aneelli · 19/01/2026 20:20

@LottieBrighton1981u didn’t know they still
exist? Have you been to the shops? They are always there in the biscuit aisle, don’t think I’ve ever not seen them

I don't believe every household has a packet of penguins in.

Have you ever tried biting both the ends off and drinking a hot drink through it. Could that open your mind to enjoying an 8pm penguin once in a while?

Is this really a thing??!

HopSpringsEternal · 18/01/2026 17:46

I mean we never have real penguins that would be really posh.We have Arctic bars a la Aldi.
The 8pm stand up and Penguin? Would drive me insane though so yanbu about that!

Aldi are definitely Seal bars. Never without a packet of knock off penguins here, but at 4pm with tea not 8pm 😆

As long as you change your definition of better, to mean worse!

I know. My son bought some the other week, and being the glutton I am and supposed to be on a diet I nicked one because he claimed they were like penguin… they were foul, they could have actually tasted like real penguins!

BackToRealitySigh · 19/01/2026 20:37

Do you work for McVities OP - haven't had a penguin for years, and dd picked up a pack of salted caramel for £1 in sainsbos tonight...

martinirossi · 19/01/2026 20:57

God forbid a man shows a little harmless whimsy.

WoollyRosebud · 19/01/2026 21:01

This thread has taken me back to when there was a promotion on Penguins with an extra one in each pack. The promotion was advertised on bus shelters and similar places. My aunt was obsessed and every car journey was interspersed with squeals about the extra Penguin if she saw the advert. It was very tiring, sympathies OP.

I thought that was what twirls were for?!

I’ve never bought a pack of penguins.

Op - Sounds this Penguin obsession is making your relationship a bit Rocky. The way I see it, you have two options - either you join the Club or you take some Time Out. If you really want Breakaway you could tie him up with a Blue Riband and escape in a Taxi. In all honesty though, if this is the biggest annoyance in your relationship, I'd say you've struck Gold.

WaveAtMe · 19/01/2026 21:17

I used to occasionally buy Penguins for my kids' packed lunches when they were at primary school. They would complain that they were boring, not eat them and ask for tunnock's bars instead. We never have them now.

Actually, Tony Chocoloney bars are much nicer.

wizzywig · 19/01/2026 21:18

I think you owe it to this thread to buy one and report back.

PeachShaker · 19/01/2026 21:20

We don’t have Penguin bars in sorry to your DH!

I think it sounds more of a quirk than an obsession, lots of people will have a certain snack every day at the same time. I think DH is a bit BU by winding you up, buy definitely NU to have an 8pm snack of said biscuit.

DongQing12 · 19/01/2026 21:21

Last time I had a penguin was in my packed lunch, when I was in primary school. I’m 37 now. Can’t say I’ve ever really thought about them until now 🐧

LAX12 · 19/01/2026 21:25

I’m with you OP, think they are overrated! We’ve never had penguins in, remind me of school pack lunches.

ambienttemperature · 19/01/2026 21:25

My lovely late MIL used to keep them in the freezer. Tried it and total game changer! We keep a pack in ours now, and DD loves them as an occasional treat. Not every day, though and I chuckled when I read OPs comment about her MIL being taken aback when not offered a Penguin with a cup of tea... My own DM would have been shocked if I had offered her anything in an individual wrapper, and not a nice Fox's assortment or similar.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 19/01/2026 21:25

What in the name of all things holy have I just read 😂

Flingotheflamingo · 19/01/2026 21:28

I don’t like Penguins..

But I do have one Ferrero Rocher every single day of the year. Normally with my 9pm cuppa.

Penguins are awful. They arent even allowed to call the stuff they are coated in "chocolate". Have not bought or eaten them in probably 20 years.
Club, Classic or KitKat all mop the floor with them.
