DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

It doesn't sound sweet or endearing. It sounds very annoying. The family sound absolutely batty. As a foreigner I am unfamiliar with Penguin biscuits but they don't seem to have spread offshore as far as I can see.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 19/01/2026 19:16

I feel the same about Club Milk… but I’m Irish ☘️

BleeBlahBlue · 18/01/2026 17:48

Have you bought him a packet of TimTams yet? Same idea as penguins just taste better 🤣

As long as you change your definition of better, to mean worse!

sunshinestar1986 · 19/01/2026 19:07

Sounds mad
But has anyone noticed that penguins have changed?
They used to be so nice, now they taste like chocolate flavoured cheap stuff

No, they are not ‘chocolate flavoured’. To label Penguins that would be illegal.

They are, I believe, palm oil junk with ‘chocolate flavour’. Someone please check the label. That’s legally very different and implies no chocolate at all. Only oil and refined sugar.

I dislike how hyperpalatible junk like this - which costs nothing to make, but has a huge marketing budget - convinces the unwary that it is actually food. Rather than a fast route to obesity and a premature death.

As a kid I did eat Penguins. They were nicer then, and at least had some chocolate on them. But it hadn’t then been a race to the bottom on price: they were relatively expensive and a treat.

NoSourDough · 19/01/2026 19:19

Alas, I’m a celiac, no fucking penguins in my house 🤣😢

DeanStockwell · 19/01/2026 19:19

I understand it must be annoying if he keeps on asking when he knows you don't like them but there are a lot worse snacks he could be eating.
My DH loved pickled eggs !

Is there a snack you would / could have at the same time ?

Sorry OP but that’s hilarious

Before I read this it's exactly what I was about to write. It's made my night 😂😂 😂

Ontobetterthings · 19/01/2026 19:27

We have penguins! Im quite partial to one 🤣

Tillow4ever · 19/01/2026 19:31

Bloody love penguins! There’s a local Pokemon go player in my town whose name is Mmmm Penguins. I actually found him one day and he was telling me the name came from his love of the biscuits! Since then I’ve tried to make sure we always have them in at home as I’d forgotten how good they are - but with 3 teenage lads, they go down quickly!

BluntAzureDreamer · 19/01/2026 19:31

Did you know penguins are just bourbon biscuits covered in chocolate?!

disturbia · 19/01/2026 19:36

Is that the worst thing he does? If so you are a lucky person. The probably remind him of his childhood. I feel the same about Tunnocks Tea Cakes the little wrapped cakes with biscuit marshmallow and chocolate. I eat one every evening at 9pm

Sam9769 · 19/01/2026 19:39

I have to admit that this evening while doing my shopping in Sainsbury's I picked up a packet of penguins for £1.

If your DH gets enjoyment from his penguins, you should be happy for him and yes YABU.

I note that it's now 7.39pm so only 21 minutes to penguin time.
Brace yourself!!!

GasPanic · 19/01/2026 19:43

Search out the penguins and replace them with jammie cart wheels - the best chocolate biscuit around.

Nowimhereandimlost · 19/01/2026 19:43

No Penguins in this house. Wasn't there a thing recently announcing they can no longer be classed as chocolate because the recipe had changed?

Bit weird to build your personality around it but at least he's not smoking crack I guess?

Cazz1953 · 19/01/2026 19:47

I used to like penguins but they don’t seem to have any taste now, only sweetness.

Yodeldodeldo · 19/01/2026 19:47

There are more expensive things... he could be obsessed with fast cars, bless him.

GasPanic · 19/01/2026 19:49

Reasons why Jammie cart wheels are great and penguins are rubbish.

i) Jamie Cart wheel looks like a cart wheel. Penguin does not look like a penguin. Unless it is one that has been just run over by a truck amd splattered in mud.

ii) Jamie cart wheels rounder and bigger in volume. Penguins are sad and square.

iii) Jammie cart wheels contain jam and marshmellow.

iv) Chocolate on jammie cart wheels is better.

LottieBrighton1981 · 19/01/2026 19:53

Ha ha. I didn’t know you could still even get penguins. Also totally forgot about clubs! These remind me of the 80’s. My Grandparents always used to have wagon wheels in the cupboard. Wonder if they’re still a thing ?!

KnittingSister · 19/01/2026 20:00

No penguins here, not for about 30 years 😁

HeadyLamarr · 19/01/2026 20:01

Penguins are rubbish in comparison with Club. Club Orange as top tier but Mint and Fruit also good.

Club, Blue Riband, Tunnocks wafer, Cadbury's Snack shortbreads, Rocky, Taxi, Gold. Then, after those, Penguin are what we used to buy when all the other biscuit bars aren't in stock.

(well, until Club also downgraded their chocolate to be only 'chocolate flavoured' which as so depressing)

I like Tim Tams but prefer Penguins. I actually keep a jar of them out on display😂 my favourite flavour is mint and I don’t eat them every day because I like seeing them in the jar ( yes, I know). I definitely wouldn’t share them so it’s good that I live alone. My visiting kids don’t like them, fortunately for me😊

Do you mean Jammie Wagon Wheels?

TroysMammy · 19/01/2026 20:14

Ugh. My mother used to buy Penguins for my lunch box in the 80s. I honestly don't know how she didn't twig that I didn't like them because I used to put them back in the cupboard. Either my sister was eating two at a time or my Mother thought the biscuit box was magical.

Boring, unpalatable chocolate flavoured cardboard.

aneelli · 19/01/2026 20:14

It’s just gone 8pm, did he do his daily ritual of penguin!? Hahaha
sorry op I laughed reading ur post!! Let him be there’s worse things happening in relationships, I think it’s quite light hearted, he knows you don’t want it but jokingly asks, I think it’s cute!

funnily enough there’s a pack of penguin in my snack cupboard that no one seems to touch! I grew up eating it, we always had it in the house, when I had kids I started buying it for them, they used to love it but I think they just prefer everything else to the penguin now, but for some daft reason I tend to buy a pack when it’s on offer, when we’re out of everything else, the kids do reluctantly have it. I no longer like it and was shocked to see it’s not covered in real chocolate anymore!
