DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

No penguins in this house. I had them growing up, however I didn't buy them once I'd left home. Tried one again 10 ish years ago in a fit of nostalgia, was deeply disappointed and haven't had one since. My daughter (now 9) occasionally got given one at parties but she never liked them and left them behind or gave them to one of the other kids.

Sootybear · 18/01/2026 20:43

We've got the 14 pack of penguins from Lidl today! Haven't had one in ages! Personally I love a Tunnocks teacake more.

PassportPanicFuuuck · 18/01/2026 20:44

I can tell you categorically that every British household does not have a packet of Penguins in, because mine doesn't (although my parents' does). They're a tasteless abomination and barely count as chocolate. Can't remember when I last ate one.

Tdcp · 18/01/2026 20:45

I don't like Penguins.

That aside, you should change things up a bit. Start going all out for the Penguins. Get him some penguin socks, pjs, cushion, etc etc, whatever you can find. It could give you present ideas for years 😂

travailtotravel · 18/01/2026 20:47

On the one hand, harmless. On the other hand, the more I think about this, the more I'm ready to provide an alibi because I could not live like this.

nothingcangowrongnow · 18/01/2026 20:48

I’ll have your husband especially if he makes a cup of tea to go with the penguins

Notthegodofsmallthings · 18/01/2026 20:49

Thank you for this thread, OP, your opening post is comedy gold!

GlomOfNit · 18/01/2026 20:49

OP, you are BVVVU for making me think this was a thread about a DH's unaccountable obsession with the southern hemisphere waddling birds who like fishing.

Having said that, no, not every house in the UK has a packet of Penguins in. I don't even like the feckers (and I understand they've recently been downgraded by Food Standards, who say they don't contain actual chocolate, just 'cocoa flavour') but I did recently buy DS a packet of Arctic Bars for packed lunches, as he doesn't really see a difference. Bad hex on Lidl calling them 'Arctic' bars, I've just realised that. Fools!

Bring back raisin Clubs!

Noo! Banish the heretic! Back in the pit of oblivion where they belong!

Bring back the hazelnut ones though.

MopAndBucketLady · 18/01/2026 20:51

We often have them in to go in lunchboxes .

k1233 · 18/01/2026 20:51

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 19:23

Maybe I’m a bit bitter - as a kid I always had a penguin in my packed lunch box but my friend had gold bars. I always thought her family must be loaded 😂

Had to google as in Australia. Similar to a tim tam, but of course tim tams are better 🙂

TallShip · 18/01/2026 20:52

Haven’t had penguins in my house for over 40 years!

helplessbanana · 18/01/2026 20:52

AwfullyGood · 18/01/2026 17:52

I don't like them and never have them in the house.

That said, you husband seems to have a slight obession with them but in the grand scheme of things, it's trivial, harmless and inexpensive.

It's not doing any damage and won't bankrupt you - far worse he could be doing.

There's also something slightly (albeit only slightly!) endearing about a grown man taking such pleasure from something small from his childhood. He sounds easily pleased and low maintenance.

Sorry but I'm voting Team DH!

I'm voting McVities' marketing department.😂😂😂

Booboobagins · 18/01/2026 20:53

@BettyWhittaker your post made me laugh.

I understand how it must drive you nuts, but it's def a 1st world matter, so perhaps one you can join in with by buying jammie dodgers or jaffas and at 7.30pm stand up to ask Jammie dodger or Jaffa cake?

And your DH is wrong. No penguins in my house I'm afraid and never have been, we prefer normal bourbons!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 18/01/2026 20:53

I used to love them but they definitely taste weird now compared to way back when - along with crispy pancakes.

selfcentred · 18/01/2026 20:54

I don’t think I’ve a penguin in the house since my kids were little but they are a bit of an institution, aren’t they.
Love that the mother is as bad! 😂

liveforsummer · 18/01/2026 20:54

Tim tams are way better. Penguins are a bit meh. None in my house

grumpygrape · 18/01/2026 20:55

diddl · 18/01/2026 19:45

Where can you buy Tim Tams?

Sorry if this has already been answered. B&M and Tesco in the UK but better to go to Oz or NZ 😂

HTH

Notinmylifethyme · 18/01/2026 20:55

If he made me a cup of tea while in the kitchen to get his penguin, I'd be happy!!

LilyCanna · 18/01/2026 21:00

ThatCyanCat · 18/01/2026 18:27

I really, really wanted this to be about the birds. I love penguins.

We don't have the biscuits in our house ever. I like them fine but haven't really thought about them for years.

I think you should start your own penguin (the bird) appreciation thread.

OtherS · 18/01/2026 21:00

I think you should definitely ltb...

And send him over to me - a man fully loaded with Penguin bars?! That's the dream!

(I don't actually have any in, and never buy them. But would still be supremely happy having a husband who provided them!)

PS If it were Jammy Dodgers, he'd be under the patio...

Gwenhwyfar · 18/01/2026 21:01

My grandparents had them around 40 years ago. We ate them as a snack before bed.
Your DH needs to grow up a bit now though.
I think you are being a snob about the party plate, however.

Poodlelove · 18/01/2026 21:01

Mirabellas · 18/01/2026 17:48

YABU. We bite off opposite corners, put one corner in your tea and suck the tea through them. It was a revelation when I learned this from a flatmate at Uni many years ago 🤣

I am going to try this

grumpygrape · 18/01/2026 21:01

Ttttttteam Ttttttimtttttttam here.

Penguins (biscuits) are fine but Timtams are better.

Love real penguins though.

We have either penguins, kitkats, clubs, time outs, wagon wheels or toffee crisp biscuits in most od the time - my decision is based purely on whichever ones are on offer that week.
