DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Can’t stand penguins bars. Just realty uninspiring. Not a patch on kitkats…..

beAsensible1 · 18/01/2026 21:03

Hilarious. I haven’t had a penguin since childhood.

your DHs family must be keeping them in business

Foodylicious · 18/01/2026 21:04

To those of you mentioning tim tams - I dont think I've ever had them, but wonder how the new m&s chocolate covered bourbons compare??

ThisHazelPombear · 18/01/2026 21:05

We’ve never had them in.

It’s just a chocolate covered biscuit with cream filling made into an oblong 🤷🏻‍♀️

fishfingerbutty · 18/01/2026 21:07

He’s a weirdo, and so is his mum.

EmbroideredGardener · 18/01/2026 21:08

Meh, not fussed by them tbh. Tried to put them in the kids lunch boxes and they didnt eat them so I didnt bother anymore

MartySupremeisascream · 18/01/2026 21:09

My DH loves them too but they taste like sawdust with sugar with me.

HeyThereDelila · 18/01/2026 21:09

No we don’t have Penguins in, but thanks to the PP who reminded me of the joy of drinking a cup of tea through one. You can also do this with Kit Kats. Bliss.

Butterflymoth · 18/01/2026 21:09

Haha, I don’t think I’ve had a penguin since I was a kid! I understand your frustration though, my DH is not nearly so discriminating and whatever sweet thing we happen to have in he will continually offer me, act scandalised if I say no and then sulk as clearly he asked me because he wanted one 😂
Ditto hot drinks. I didn’t know until wfh during Covid how many hot drinks he has during the day. No I don’t want a sodding hot drink, I just had one! Drink some water like a normal person!!

HarryVanderspeigle · 18/01/2026 21:09

I used to love a penguin, but they can no longer legally be considered chocolate any more and are just full of palm/vegetable oil instead of coco. Sad times.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 18/01/2026 21:09

We always have the Aldi version of penguins purchased by DH who was raisedY by a man who ALWAYS had multiple packs of penguins in stock. It would seem your DH is not alone.
Only difference is no one talks about the penguins in are house they just exist quietly.

TwinklySquid · 18/01/2026 21:09

I’m really disappointed this wasn’t about actual penguins. It was the only reason I clicked on it 😂

BrickBiscuit · 18/01/2026 21:10

Not RTFT but has he picked up that they are, like most confectionery these days, no longer made of chocolate but some brown artificial substitute fat-based material?

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 18/01/2026 21:12

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:47

Oh god don’t, I hear this everytime he goes out to shop

If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our club!

Not anymore though, global warming and trade wars have put paid to that.

Also global warming means nobody will know what penguins are soon.

Poor children. Destined to die in some awful war.

Never knowing the simple joy of a finger of fudge.

Not nearly enough to give me a treat anymore...

I don't know but I have an Ocado order this week...... 😊

By the way, those banging on about Club - they are no longer 'chocolate'

That isn't why KitKats were popular...

CalliopeFosterBeauchamp · 18/01/2026 21:13

I hate penguins - and clubs and kitkats. Love a choc digestive and a choc chip cookie though.

TeamGeriatric · 18/01/2026 21:14

We are more likely to have tim tams in than penguins, but it's not necessity on the shopping list and pretty sure there are none in the house right now. Slightly disappointed his obsession is not with the birds though, I was hoping he was planning to take you on trips to the various locations to spot different penguin varieties!

RattlingTin · 18/01/2026 21:16

We always had them in our biscuit tin when I was growing up but I’ve never bought them as an adult. Last year we went to the Falkland Islands and took a trip to see the king penguin colony and in our provided packed lunch there was a penguin biscuit! It was a bit disappointing tbh (the biscuit, not the birds… the birds were incredible! 🥰)

LashesZ · 18/01/2026 21:17

Unfortunately due to the cost of living crisis I find myself eating a Seal bar nowadays. Penguins are undoubtedly the best of the chocolate biscuit bunch.

NautilusLionfish · 18/01/2026 21:17

Judge: So Mrs @BettyWhittaker why are you petitioning for a divorce from Mr Whittaker?
@BettyWhittaker : He loves fucking Penguins
Judge: Golly Gosh, this is more serious than we thought.
The biscuits sir. Not the birds!

Moonlightfrog · 18/01/2026 21:19

I have voted YABU, although I don’t currently have penguins in the house (as we are still eating through chocolate and biscuits gifted to us for Christmas), I do often buy the mint or orange penguins. When I was a child I had one in my lunch box most days, or a kitkat, I much preferred them over a club bar but was partial to a 54321. Birthday parties would always include a plate of penguins and some part rings.

I did recently try Tam Tams and I have to say……”I think they are better than penguins”.

Feelinold · 18/01/2026 21:22

This post has made me remember how much I miss Penguins 'in the dark'. They were dark chocolate penguins that were in a dark blue packet and tasted SO so good. Does your husband remember those?
It's so sad that now Penguin bars are not just chocolate flavoured now. I miss the jokes too.

I voted YABU as I think a plate of penguins will go down well at most children's birthday party. Not sure about the Britishness aspect but it certainly sounds nostalgic for your husband and as long as he's healthy, why not let him enjoy them.

MichaelmasDaisiesAndAutumSunset · 18/01/2026 21:23

Penguins are horrible. Never had them in the house when we were kids either. Don’t think my children have ever seen one. Born and raised in UK
