Thumbs up for Streeting

Just read Wes Streeting has got second biggest fall in waiting lists in 15 years and ambulances arriving 15 minutes faster. I think that's an achievement in just over a year in government. Bit sick of all the Labour bashing. Dread to think what NHS would be like under orher parties..Waiting lists 20 years long and ambulances arriving 2 weeks after you call ? A packet if painkillers £20. A trip to the GP £ 100 for ten minutes.

Waiting lists are down because they have kicked a load of people off the list.
Including my friends mum. She back to square one now

1apenny2apenny · 17/01/2026 23:13

@JemimaTiggywinklesactually I think the lies and manipulation of the truth is why I don’t trust figures and headlines anymore. For example Starmers use of safe spaces instead of single sex spaces. Immigration figures not broken sufficiently-frankly it’s pretty important when the people arriving are unskilled and have nothing and the people leaving are all net contributors!

Johnson’s government didn’t need to manipulate figures they just told bare faced lies.

letsallchant · 17/01/2026 23:13

Good. NHS improvements are one of the key things that will win people round. They really need to get communications on track as that's not been helping them.

@Lamelie I don't get it either! I assume people just either have really short memories about how bad life under the Tories was, or are amazingly credulous about how Reform will magically improve things based on zero evidence.

ExitPursuedByABare · 17/01/2026 23:28

Wait what? You can only get a hip replacement if you are under 65?

I know they’ve stopped treating cysts on the NHS but that seems terrible.

Glitterbiscuits · 17/01/2026 23:37

That’s Brilliant.
Labour should be shouting out their successes!

ohfourfoxache · 17/01/2026 23:43

Nope, sorry. He’s a trumped up little wankpuffin who is about to cut huge swathes of staff and take us back to the pre Francis report days

I detest him with every fibre of my being

ohfourfoxache · 17/01/2026 23:45

And the waiting lists are only down because they are being manipulated. I know this because I deal with complaints from GPs who are then expected to re-refer

Depends where the cysts are surely?

ExitPursuedByABare · 17/01/2026 23:51

@Wingedharpy yes it does.

Credit where it's due

He's done well on this one.

Has he though? Waiting lists were already falling when Labour came to power (and would have fallen even faster if it wasn't for the strikes). As we get further and further away from covid it was inevitable that waiting lists would fall. Its neither credit to the Torys or Labour, it's just circumstance.

Wankpuffin. Excellent word.

But also true about the cuts. I am truly astounded that the media are not reporting the wholesale cuts that Labour are making across the NHS. It's not necessarily a bad thing as hopefully it will become a slimmed down but better service in the future but it will certainly go through some tough times.

The public don't yet seem to be aware that Labour are doing to the NHS what the Tories did to local government. Why are the media not reporting this?

Wholeheartedly agree

ICBs are being cut AGAIN - ours by over 50%. We’ve just been through 25% cuts a couple of years ago

There is so much crucial work that has been paused, so many improvements on hold, simply because we don’t have the long term guarantee that things will be sustained. It’s genuinely heartbreaking

Lots still to do

You are barking up the wrong tree here .. The MN wing of The Daily Mail / GB news will be along shortly to tell you that Keir Starmer is the Devil, and Streeting is one of his imps.

They can’t ever say “I don’t like X, but I think that Y is good”. It’s the “all or nothing” Political cesspit we are currently in, where people are Angels or Devils, with very little reference to facts

I don't think they'll be along anytime soon because they can' t actually work out which one of them is using their collective brain cell tonight, so they don't know who to elect as spokesperson.

Yes- I think anyone with half a brain knew it would take time to unpick all the damage caused by austerity, Brexit, Covid and deliberate dismantling/ underfunding of public services by the conservatives.

Sadly the electorate seems to have lost its collective mind, and seems to think that you can reverse literal decades of damage in 12 months.

Anyway I’m glad there’s a quantifiable change - and I hope Labour’s press team do what they should as we head towards the next GE and keep reminding people of the quantifiable, positive work they’re doing.

Quite

He's awful, I loathe him.

The mess they inherited is absolutely the Tories fault, but I've worked in the NHS for 25 years (CAMHS) and I've never known it so bad. It's falling apart. If waiting lists are dropping, it's because thresholds have risen so a lot more people are just turned down and deemed ineligible.

Training is stalling as there's no jobs for people to go into, despite record referral levels.

Smoke and mirrors to hide that the NHS is being dismantled.

Daygloboo · 18/01/2026 01:11

Endofyear · 17/01/2026 22:56

I think he's doing a pretty decent job to be honest - there are no quick fixes when our public services have been run into the ground by 14 years of Tory under investment. I saw a clip of Robert Jenrick 🤮 speech where he said 'I think we can all agree, Britain is broken' and I shouted at the tv 'Yes and you're the fuckers who broke it'!!! Honestly, the bloody cheek of him 🤬 sorry, rant over!

I know. It was an absolute joke, wasnt it. All those defectors and existing ones, just you watch them, they'll be like.rats in a sack before long. In fact. I think it's already started coz one of them was on telly with a daft grin on his face when the journslist pointed out that that Zia bloke apparently didn't put out a statement welcoming Jenrick to the party. They all give each other daggers looks, as if they want the star part in the pantomime, and they expect all the others to play the back end of the cow.

Some staff need cutting coz they are not doing a good job and just cover their own backs. We need more clinical ataff and fewer twiddly thumb managers.

The NHS is chronically under managed

Clinical staff are not there to fill out paperwork (and whether you’re talking referrals or reports, it needs to be done)

Speaking as someone who has worked tirelessly for the NHS for 23 years, has 2 degrees in health related areas (law and quality), and who finished working at 23:30 on a Saturday night AFTER doing more than a full week at work, your comments are frankly insulting

I’m sure you have, dear

The very few I’ve met probably total about 0.5% of the people I’ve worked with

But that’s fine. You carry on slagging us all off. As if we’re not utterly fucking broken and exhausted and facing redundancy. Thanks a fucking bunch. Appreciate it.

I've come across some bloody awful healthcare staff, incompetent doesn't even cover it, really truly nasty people to be around, who were clearly only still in employment because when you have a national healthcare system it's a massive deal to sack someone from it because there's nowhere else for them to go. The management tier, different considerations apply but they are generally more accountable for their performance than eg ward staff.

Pinepeak2434 · 18/01/2026 01:33

15 minutes faster, but still have to wait over 8 hours. Great.
