Fruit bowls

NewNewForest · 17/01/2026 18:22

When I was a small child we had a fruit bowl on the kitchen table which my mother kept topped up, and we could freely pick from.
I do not have a fruit bowl and keep fruit in the fridge and we all just help ourselves.
Who has a fruit bowl?
I wonder if I don’t as my house has central heating (we didn’t growing up) and perhaps fruit lasts longer in the fridge?
Or that we have different types of fruit now to my mum used to buy (she mainly bought apples and maybe oranges, occasionally grapes) but I buy all sorts of things and either chop and keep in fridge or just leave in their packages.

what’s the AIBU um …. AIBU to keep fruit in its packaging in the fridge or do we need a fruit bowl 🤷‍♀️

We have a fruit bowl. I find fruit in the fridge doesn’t ripen - you just end up with rock solid, cold pears.

Musicmummy63 · 18/01/2026 21:34

We have 2 on the kitchen work top. Bananas have in 1 bowl, the other currently has apples, kiwi, oranges and apricots as i can't stand cold fruit.
DH also likes to keep the nectarines in the conservatory as its a bit cooler in there, so really we have 3 I suppose. We do love fruit xxx

Teajenny7 · 18/01/2026 22:04

The fruit bowls contain mango,pineapple,apples,oranges,kiwis.
Soft fruit in the fridge.

Ruthietuthie · 18/01/2026 22:18

@EnjoythemoneyJane, you are COMPLETELY right. And I fully agree with your different bowl categories. Yes, a mixture of fruits does have that "cellophane wrapped hospital gift basket" look.
You have excellent taste!

Endorewitch · 18/01/2026 22:27

Yes I have a fruit bowl. Fruit doesn't need to be kept in fridge for freshness anyhow.
If it is in the fridge it is out of sight out of mind.

LittleArithmetics · 18/01/2026 22:28

I have a beautiful mosaic fruit bowl. It always contains citrus, and currently has pears and kiwis.

itsthetea · 18/01/2026 22:40

I have a fruit bowl - I don’t like my fruit cold

I try to avoid out of season fruit also so no berries to worry about - and they don’t last long enough to be worried about going off in the summer

bananas to the side of it though

Secretseverywhere · 18/01/2026 22:46

I have a fruit bowl but it’s just bananas, apples, oranges and sometimes pears or plums. Grapes and melon are kept in the fridge, I don’t find berries last very well so I tend to eat/ serve them all on the day they are bought.

wheresthesnowgone · 18/01/2026 22:55

We top up the fruit bowl on the table as required from fruit kept in the fridge to keep it fresher longer. If there's nothing out in the bowl we forget to eat fruit 🍓

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/01/2026 23:08

My fruit bowl sits on top of the microwave, but clear of the vents before you all clutch your pearls. I bought the bowl from Habitat about 35 years ago. It has fruit round the sides and a green rim and I love it beyond anything reasonable. It’s part of my life. Currently contains grapes, nine tangerines, four pears and a banana.

BooneyBeautiful · 19/01/2026 01:43

I have a fruit bowl for apples and bananas. Pears, grapes and other fruit I keep in the fridge as otherwise I find it goes off too quickly.

clamshell24 · 19/01/2026 06:54

I would never refrigerate fruit! Have a fruit bowl which always contains apples and a lemon. Bananas sit separately as they overripen everything else.

angela1952 · 19/01/2026 10:00

I don't like eating very cold fruit so tend to keep a small amount in the fruit bowl and the rest in the fridge (not bananas of course). It also keeps better in the cold. If there isn't any in the bowl we won't notice it and won't eat it.

Okayfenokay · 19/01/2026 10:26

I only keep passion fruit, lemons and pears (at the moment) (which need ripening) in our fruit bowl.

MagicStarrz · 19/01/2026 10:30

We have a fruit bowl

It's not so warm in this country that fruit needs to be kept in the fridge.

MonkeyPuddle · 19/01/2026 10:36

We have one, it’s in the middle of the dining table and the kids and us have free rein over fruit. It’s got large and small oranges, apples, pears and then bananas are on a hook in the kitchen.
I only buy fresh berries in season but have frozen ones in for porridge year round.

BarnacleBeasley · 19/01/2026 10:39

My in-laws left their fruit bowl on the table within reach of my 2yo once, and came back into the kitchen to find an empty bowl and partially-eaten satsumas all over the place.

ImFineItsAllFine · 19/01/2026 10:46

We ve got one (technically a platter not a bowl) but mostly it only has apples and bananas and sometimes pears. Everything else goes in the fridge - I find satsumas/easy peelers type oranges are much less likely to dry out if kept in the fridge.

Agree with pp that last summer was god awful for fruit flies, we had to cover our fruit for ages and at its worst we kept all the fruit in the fridge (and stopped eating bananas).

BauhausOfEliott · 19/01/2026 10:48

I have a fruit bowl. I don't have kids so I don't need to persuade anyone to eat fruit, but as most fruit doesn't need refrigerating I can't see why I'd keep it in the fridge. Mine usually has pears and bananas as standard, along with either apples, plums, peaches or whatever we fancy that week, plus a few citrus fruits which mostly get used for cooking or adding to drinks.

I keep grapes in the fridge, though, purely because I like them chilled.

Gossipisgood · 19/01/2026 11:25

We have a fruit bowl on the kitchen table for Apples, oranges, Bananas, Peaches. Grapes, Mangos & other soft fruits go in the fridge.

Yawn.....

Anonanonanonagain · 19/01/2026 11:58

Apples, oranges, pears, plums, peaches and bananas in the fruit bowl, melon, grapes and berries in the fridge.

pollymere · 19/01/2026 12:08

I keep apples, pears, bananas and oranges in my fruit bowl. Other fruit does tend to stay in the fridge to keep it fresh. Growing up, my DC sort of knew that they had to ask for "Fridge fruit" but could eat what they liked from the bowl. It was rarely a no to fridge fruit but it usually needed prep like berries being washed.

Melons and pineapples tend to go in the fruit bowl too purely due to size. Mangoes and papayas in the fridge. My fruit bowl recently had the excitement of a pomelo in it too.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 19/01/2026 14:13

I have a fruit basket on the dining table for apples & oranges, a wooden 'boat' for bananas in the kitchen and frozen fruit in the freezer for breakfasts and smoothies. Don't keep any in the fridge.

Londonrach1 · 19/01/2026 14:18

Fruit bowl here and tbh is every house I've visited so unusual to not have a fruit bowl especially if you've children. I'm hungry have a banana or apple...
