Fruit bowls

NewNewForest · 17/01/2026 18:22

When I was a small child we had a fruit bowl on the kitchen table which my mother kept topped up, and we could freely pick from.
I do not have a fruit bowl and keep fruit in the fridge and we all just help ourselves.
Who has a fruit bowl?
I wonder if I don’t as my house has central heating (we didn’t growing up) and perhaps fruit lasts longer in the fridge?
Or that we have different types of fruit now to my mum used to buy (she mainly bought apples and maybe oranges, occasionally grapes) but I buy all sorts of things and either chop and keep in fridge or just leave in their packages.

what’s the AIBU um …. AIBU to keep fruit in its packaging in the fridge or do we need a fruit bowl 🤷‍♀️

We have a fruit bowl however the last couple of years have been horrendous for fruit flies so it is mostly unused apart from the bananas now go in it and any avocados I want the bananas to ripen up.

HeadyLamarr · 18/01/2026 06:51

Oranges, lemons and limes on the fruit bowl with the bananas, salad tomatoes and avocado. You get more juic from citrus when it's room temperature. Bananas help the avocado ripen, and tomatoes taste nicer when not cold.

Apples in the fridge because I love a cold crisp apple with a piece of cheese.

ThisMellowCat · 18/01/2026 17:49

We have a fruit bowl in the lounge easily picked

Tink3rbell30 · 18/01/2026 17:58

I have one but it's still full of Christmas chocolates..

ColdWaterDipper · 18/01/2026 18:10

We have a fruit bowl containing apples, satsumas (or similar small orangey cousins), and sometimes kiwis, pears, pomegranates, peaches or plums. Bananas on a hook, and then grapes, watermelon, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries etc all live in the fridge. I find the kids help themselves to the fruit bowl multiple times a day, but always ask me if they can have the fruit in the fridge - visiting children too go for the fruit bowl over asking for snacks so maybe it’s just because it’s on display (not literally on display, it’s just in the middle of the island).

Berries live in the fridge. Bananas never. Other fruit we tend to buy 2 bags of a week so one in fridge, one unbagged in bowl.

Dorrieisalittlewitch · 18/01/2026 19:05

We have both. Soft fruit in fridge. Apples, clementines, grapes, kiwis and bananas in fruit bowl atm.

Mykneesareshot · 18/01/2026 19:07

I don't eat fruit and hence don't own a fruit bowl. Never have, not even as a child.

medievalmadonna · 18/01/2026 19:17

Not really massively keen on fruit here, tend to buy what's in season (or stored like apples), and always keep it in the fridge as don't like room temperature fruit. In summer, when there's more fruit, will fill fruit bowl but still store it in the fridge! I even keep bananas in the fridge, they're so much nicer cold 😁

BlackCat14 · 18/01/2026 19:34

We have a fruit bowl, that’s always filled with apples!

Chinsupmeloves · 18/01/2026 19:40

Always have a fruit bowl, whether it gets eaten or not is a different matter! X

EnjoythemoneyJane · 18/01/2026 19:53

Ha - me too, @Ruthietuthie! I’ve got loads of different bowls, am extremely particular about fruit segregation and freely admit to being a Fruit Twat 😂

Berries go in the fridge, everything else in bowls. One in the kitchen has tomatoes, garlic, avocados. Another has only oranges, limes & lemons (but kiwis are allowed in with citrus for some reason). The others might have just green apples, or a mixture of nectarines and plums, or apricots & pomegranates. And bananas are on a hook away well from everything else - I’m not a monster.

Certain things grouped in a bowl look really lovely and appetising, whereas all chucked in together it gets a bit ‘hospital gift basket’, especially if - like at MIL’s - there are always a couple of brown-spotted bananas on the top 🤮.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 18/01/2026 19:56

I've always had a fruit bowl. Grapes ad berries live in the fridge. Everything else goes in the fruit bowl.

Popadomorbread · 18/01/2026 19:58

We have a fruit bowl. It currently has an onion some batteries and a pack of lemsip in. I tend to throw things in it when I want a clear surface 🤦‍♀️

SwirlyGates · 18/01/2026 20:02

Fruit bowl here. Most fruit lasts long enough out of the fridge, and I really, really don't like chilled fruit. We keep berries in the fridge, but I take them out to warm up a bit before we eat them (they tend to be dessert rather than snacking food).

AxolotlEars · 18/01/2026 20:12

I have three 😂

Blueuggboots · 18/01/2026 20:15

I have a fruit bowl but it’s not big enough!! I want a foldaway banana hook…

Daftypants · 18/01/2026 20:19

I’ve got a gorgeous big bowl I got on a holiday from a pottery where we stayed , so that sits out full of bananas, pears + satsumas at the moment.
DH likes apples kept in the fridge and I keep any berries in the fridge too.
i keep tomatoes and avocados in a lovely Emma Bridgewater bowl on the kitchen counter too

Obimumkinobi · 18/01/2026 20:35

I have a strategically placed fruit bowl, which is in direct line of sight when entering from the hallway, which definitely gets the family eating more fruit, and (slightly!) delays the hunt for other snacks.
Berries and grapes are kept front and centre in the fridge at eye level too.

MaddestGranny · 18/01/2026 20:46

It was a different time when I was a child. We had a fruit bowl, usually just apples or pears, often home-grown, to which we had open access always. Hungry? Have an apple, (there wasn't anything else & we didn't have a fridge).
However, when I met my husband he was quite angry with my fruit bowl habit (which had oranges & various other additions by then). His mother had had an "ornamental" fruit bowl. An arrangement of fruit to be displayed in the front window flanked by Darville Lace curtains - to be admired but NOT eaten!
He was fascinated and eventually mollified by the notion that my fruit bowl was there, essentially, as an open invitation to eat the fruit whenever you fancied.
I've always had a fruit bowl, I've got one now. I replenish it daily with most of the fruit which I keep in the fridge.

The invitation is still the same: Eat Me, Whenever You Want To.
My daughter has one in her house, the same, open invitation.

Flomingho · 18/01/2026 20:49

Yes we have one on the kitchen table with apples, bananas, avocado, kiwi and oranges. Berries, melon once opened, grapes and plums etc all go in the fridge.

blizymitzy · 18/01/2026 20:52

MopAndBucketLady · 18/01/2026 21:02

I di bananas apples oranges. But just put 3 apples and orange I'm bowl a times and rest in fridge and top up as gets used . Strawberries, blueberries grapes etc are always in fridge bottom so kids can reach

Onoopie · 18/01/2026 21:13

We do, mostly for bananas and make the kitchen look more “homely”. I keep most fruits in the fridge, take out what I want to eat (next day) overnight and pop them in the bowl..so they are at room temperature when I eat them.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 18/01/2026 21:14

Yes we have a fruit bowl. Sometimes with a stunt pineapple.
