Fruit bowls

NewNewForest · 17/01/2026 18:22

When I was a small child we had a fruit bowl on the kitchen table which my mother kept topped up, and we could freely pick from.
I do not have a fruit bowl and keep fruit in the fridge and we all just help ourselves.
Who has a fruit bowl?
I wonder if I don’t as my house has central heating (we didn’t growing up) and perhaps fruit lasts longer in the fridge?
Or that we have different types of fruit now to my mum used to buy (she mainly bought apples and maybe oranges, occasionally grapes) but I buy all sorts of things and either chop and keep in fridge or just leave in their packages.

what’s the AIBU um …. AIBU to keep fruit in its packaging in the fridge or do we need a fruit bowl 🤷‍♀️

I prefer fruit such as apples and oranges cold, and they keep better in the fridge.
The fruit bowl is for bananas and underripe fruit - once peaches, pears and apricots are ripe they need to go into the fridge too.

Yes I have one, it is filled with ceramic fruit shapes that I bought abroad. Never goes smelly or bruised or needs to be replenished or anything and looks so lovely.

The only fruit I eat (live on my own) are raspberries, strawbs, and blueberries. I buy them frozen and put them on my yogurt/porridge. Perfect for me!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 17/01/2026 20:15

I have 2, one big one that should have apples, satsumas, kiwis, lemons, limes etc in but actually has hand cream, an odd button, a receipt, a pen. I have a second for bananas but that currently has a pack of dates and some biscuits in it and the bananas are in with the hand cream.

I had a problem with fruit flies until November last year so haven't got round to putting fruit back in the bowls.

Myexhas6kids · 17/01/2026 20:17

I have a wide earthenware hand painted fruit bowl currently containing apples, pears, satsumas, a Sharon fruit, a grapefruit and a banana. Everyone can help themselves. I buy grapes as well but keep them in the plastic tub.

Fruit bowl here, i can’t stand cold fruit on my teeth. Although i do keep grapes and cherries in the fridge and just take out what I want for the day.

Our fruit bowl has odds and ends in it, never fruit. Most fruit lives in the fridge to keep it fresh longer. Bananas are just left on the worktop, nestled amongst the rest of the 'stuff' that gets left out. We never buy enough at one time to fill the bowl (a large one, wedding gift nearly 25 years ago), so I never bother putting them in there. Maybe I should start, though.

Bougainsillier · 17/01/2026 20:22

I can’t bear cold fruit.. it would never be eaten. Same with salad in the summer.
Our fruit bowl is on the kitchen table

HeyThereDelila · 17/01/2026 20:25

We have a fruit bowl (and a separate dish for bananas) kept on a counter in the kitchen. It usually has apples, oranges, lemons and grapefruit in it, occasionally pears. In summer there’ll be plums and nectarines.

I only buy British soft fruit in season in summer and it’s usually eaten on the same day.

marginallyawake · 17/01/2026 20:28

I have a fruit bowl. It was a wedding present and lives in the attic.
Fruit lives in the fridge (briefly before being consumed by the kids).
Bananas are the work of the devil and have no place in a civilised household.

SpicedAppleCake · 17/01/2026 20:41

Grapes and berries in the fridge, watermelon too when we have it. The rest of the fruit is in the fruit bowl.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 17/01/2026 20:53

I have a bowl of citrus fruit out. I also have a receptacle that was originally bought for fruit but currently has a butternut squash, some potatoes and both red and white onions in it. I don't tend to buy much fruit, I don't really like it.

nhgto · 17/01/2026 20:55

No I don’t because it attracts fruit flies which absolutely do my nut in

clingfilmed · 17/01/2026 20:56

We have a fruit bowl for bananas and oranges, avocados, kiwi and pears etc. We keep most fruit in the fridge but move it to the bowl as required before eating to warm or ripen. I eat apples daily but prefer them chilled straight from the fridge same for grapes and berries.

In the summer we use a net over the bowl and we don't get too many fruit flies thankfully.

Advocodo · 17/01/2026 20:56

Yes to fruit bowl. Can’t bear cold apples etc.

FancyCatSlave · 17/01/2026 21:00

I fucking hate the fruit bowl. I am still living with my ex post divorce until the house is sold. The fruit bowl is his, it’s a hugely impractical ornate glass one and sadly it has survived all 5 house moves during our marriage. His vile mother bought it. I can’t bloody wait to see the back of it.

And breathe.

I will have a better bowl in my house. For apples and pears and oranges. Most other fruit lives in fridge. I don’t like a warm grape.

napody · 17/01/2026 21:00

Felt like a real grown up when I got a fruit bowl! A turned wood one. Pears, bananas, avocados stay in there and apples I add a few at a time from the fridge.

Makingpeace · 17/01/2026 21:02

We have an accessible fruit bowl and a banana tree, and also fruit in the fridge (berries).

DoveTurtle · 17/01/2026 21:04

I love my fruit bowl. Keep everything apart for berries in it.

Morepositivemum · 17/01/2026 21:04

apples and grapes in the fridge here, bananas, mandarins, oranges and pineapples in a fruit bowl on the counter.I had heard bananas and tomatoes should never go in the fridge.

edited to add I put berries in the fridge too

SusanChurchouse · 17/01/2026 21:08

I have a fruit bowl on the dining table and other fruit is kept in the fridge. My children largely ignore both.

HippyChickMama · 17/01/2026 21:10

We have a fruit rack, rather than a bowl. It’s a two tier wire shelf thing with a banana hook on each side. I find fruit keeps longer in it, than when we had a bowl, maybe the air circulation? Berries in the fridge

Echlefecker · 17/01/2026 21:13

I keep berries in the fridge but everything else is in the fruit bowl. Currently apple's, easy peelers, bananas and 2 avocados. Bananas would go black in the fridge surely?

DistractMe · 17/01/2026 21:20

We have three fruit bowls (we eat A LOT of fruit) - one for apples, one for oranges/satsumas and one for bananas. Shelf life isn't an issue as we restock at least twice a week. Grapes and lemons live in the fridge.

I am so used to eating fruit whenever I want that I presume bowls in other people's houses are open access and often help myself.

Mama2many73 · 17/01/2026 21:26

I hated our fruit bowl, it was round and solid and took up way too much space on the kitchen bench.
I bought a 2 tiered mesh fruit basket just from b&m and I love it!! Its rectangle, lies flat against the wall and wastes no space. It is a brilliant thing!!

tinyspiny · 17/01/2026 21:30

We have 2 fruit bowls one for apples / pears , the other is for citrus fruits , bananas have their own hook and all other fruits live in the fridge . Our house is very well heated but it doesn’t affect fruit like apples and I wouldn’t want to eat them cold .
