Fruit bowls

When I was a small child we had a fruit bowl on the kitchen table which my mother kept topped up, and we could freely pick from.
I do not have a fruit bowl and keep fruit in the fridge and we all just help ourselves.
Who has a fruit bowl?
I wonder if I don’t as my house has central heating (we didn’t growing up) and perhaps fruit lasts longer in the fridge?
Or that we have different types of fruit now to my mum used to buy (she mainly bought apples and maybe oranges, occasionally grapes) but I buy all sorts of things and either chop and keep in fridge or just leave in their packages.

what’s the AIBU um …. AIBU to keep fruit in its packaging in the fridge or do we need a fruit bowl 🤷‍♀️

We have a fruit bowl (kids don't help themselves though). We only put fruits in the fridge if they get a bit old.
We don't really like fridge-cold fruits, so it's pain to have to take them out ahead of meals to get them to room temperature.
They would take too much space in the fridge too, and the drawers are usually filled with veg already.

I've got a nice Alessi one, but it's more for show than fruit!!!

My parents still have one (I think it's crystal) for fruit and it lives in the middle of their dining room table.

We have a big fruit bowl and 1-2 secondary fruit bowls. Berries are in the fridge as is soft fruit in summer.

My youngest eats 3-4 apples a day. My oldest eats an orange, several plums and a carrot a day.

We have a fruit bowl that currently has raisins, bananas a toy car, some pencils a notebook 😂

Ours has some apples, chocolate coins, a spinning top and a Lego arm 🙄

RaraRachael · 17/01/2026 18:56

We have a fruit bowl with nothing ever in it 😅

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 17/01/2026 18:59

Both. Oranges and bananas (and sometimes apples) in fruit bowl. Grapes, berries in fridge

Miranda65 · 17/01/2026 18:59

I have a lovely cut glass fruit bowl, which was a wedding present 35 years ago. I have never, ever put any fruit in it. (I rarely even buy fruit, as we don't eat it. Just citrus fruit to go in a G & T 🤣).

Minjou · 17/01/2026 19:01

Three tier fruit bowl here.

RaraRachael · 17/01/2026 19:04

The only thing that might darken my fruit bowl is something I need for a recipe. Right now it contains a lonely lemon

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 17/01/2026 19:07

We don’t have a fruit bowl. Fruit is too expensive now to buy enough for a bowlful. Instead we have a bag of apples that the kids can help themselves to.

FOJN · 17/01/2026 19:07

I have a large serving bowl which is currently home to some mandarins and pears. Any fruit I bite into whole is stored at room temperature. Everything else is stored in the fridge. In the summer I store all fruit in the fridge to make it last longer but use a small pasta bowl to keep a few pieces of fruit at room temp and replace with fridge stock whenever I eat some.

longtompot · 17/01/2026 19:10

We have a fruit bowl but I do keep some fruit in the fridge. Currently blood oranges but in the summer, grapes and soft fruits

Shufflebumnessie · 17/01/2026 19:11

We have a 2 tiered fruit bowl on the kitchen table. The top layer currently has a stack of hospital appointment letters for DS & the bottom layer has a tub of kids vitamins & a bag of humbugs!!
All the fruit lives in the fridge because we don't like it at room temperature, we all prefer it cold & crunchy.
YANBU.

Snowymcsnowface · 17/01/2026 19:24

We have one - currently has apples, bananas and satsumas in. We have grapes and watermelon in the fridge, and blueberries and raspberries in the freezer. Two kids, both love fruit though too young to help themselves.

LilyLemonade · 17/01/2026 19:38

I have various fruit bowls, always filled, but at the moment the apples and clementines are in the fridge because it's too warm and they go off if left out. I warm the apples up on the radiator before eating lol. There are kiwis and oranges currently in the fruit bowl and bananas just sitting on the kitchen worktop.

Zanatdy · 17/01/2026 19:39

When kids were younger, I had one for the bananas as don’t put them in the fridge but other fruit, I store in the fridge and prefer it from the fridge.

mondaytosunday · 17/01/2026 19:40

I don’t put fruit in the fridge. I have a fruit bowl but don’t have any fruit in it (avocados though). It has onions , avos, sweet potatoes etc (it’s not on the table but on top of the microwave). Fruit goes in if I have it but I don’t usually (grapes, strawberries go in the fridge). Apples, oranges, citrus fruits in the bowl if I have them.

Rituelec · 17/01/2026 19:41

Not all fruit is meant to go in the fridge

blankcanvas3 · 17/01/2026 19:46

We don’t as we’re not really a fruit family, we all much prefer veg. DS won’t touch the stuff and DDs only really like berries which we keep in the fridge.

clary · 17/01/2026 19:48

We have four fruit bowls.

The currently contain:

  • about eight bananas
  • apples and pears
  • oranges, satsumas and avocados
  • a mango, a kiwi and a few lemons (that one's not full atm tbh)
None of those should be in the fridge. See also nectarines and plums which replace the apples, oranges and pears in the summer. In the fridge we have blueberries and grapes (and strawberries in the summer).

Yes you need a fruit bowl. Are your apples in the fridge? ugh at some of the fridge-fruit on this thread.

Fgfgfg · 17/01/2026 19:48

Apples, clementines, and a pomegranate in the fruit bowl. Grapes are in a bowl that I've just taken out of the fridge. Part of the pomegranate will be eaten soon and the remainder put in the fridge.

ResusciAnnie · 17/01/2026 19:50

Id say that’s unusual OP, everyone has a fruit bowl!! Where do you keep your bananas?? I despise a cold apple, ouch. Grapes and strawberries etc I like to come up to room temp too, much more flavoursome. Citrus etc room temp too.

Tryagain26 · 17/01/2026 19:53

We have a fruit bowl. But no one is being unreasonable just do whatever you want

lazyarse123 · 17/01/2026 20:03

We have a wooden bowl that dh made. He was supposed to sell it, he used to sell wood turned stuff, but i really liked it so we kept it. It lives on top of the fridge, which is not very tall as we live in a park home and the table is in front of the window and gets too warm.

Changename12 · 17/01/2026 20:04

We eat a lot of fruit but I don’t have a fruit bowl. I prefer it from the fridge. I remember my grandmother’s fruit bowl and the wrinkled apples.
