Fruit bowls

When I was a small child we had a fruit bowl on the kitchen table which my mother kept topped up, and we could freely pick from.
I do not have a fruit bowl and keep fruit in the fridge and we all just help ourselves.
Who has a fruit bowl?
I wonder if I don’t as my house has central heating (we didn’t growing up) and perhaps fruit lasts longer in the fridge?
Or that we have different types of fruit now to my mum used to buy (she mainly bought apples and maybe oranges, occasionally grapes) but I buy all sorts of things and either chop and keep in fridge or just leave in their packages.

what’s the AIBU um …. AIBU to keep fruit in its packaging in the fridge or do we need a fruit bowl 🤷‍♀️

We have a fruit bowl for oranges, bananas, apples limes and lemons. Berries go in the fridge

I don't waste fruit by putting it in the fridge/morgue. It has to be left out so we see it and pick at it and actually eat it.

DH hides it in the fridge/morgue so it ends up going to waste rather than being eaten.

Yep, fruit bowl here for apples, pears, oranges, bananas, nectarines etc. Soft berries in the fridge.

Wherestheteenguide · 17/01/2026 22:43

Yup, beautiful wooden fruit bowl here. Apples , oranges and bananas and avocados in there. Soft fruits and grapes in fridge..I find it aesthetically pleasing 🙂

I have a fruit bowl. Couldn’t eat apples and oranges straight out the fridge - would hurt my teeth .

I hate biting into cold apples - those, bananas, citrus fruits and the occasional pomegranate go in the fruit bowl, berries and melon (once they've been cut) live in the fridge with the peppers, tomatoes, cucumber and salad stuff.

Sgtmajormummy · 17/01/2026 23:14

I look on our fruit bowl as an edible still life painting and there’s a framed Monet print on the wall above it (Aspirational? Moi?Grin).

We eat 2/3 pieces a day each so it’s replenished twice a week at least. Currently apples, clementines and bananas in my footed bowl and there are various salad bowls for the overflow.

Avocados and pears need to ripen in the open and then go in the fridge.
Cold crunchy grapes are delicious in the Summer. And cold watermelon obv.

I keep some things in the fridge but put oranges in a glass bowl that becomes the Quality Street bowl at Christmas.

Ruthietuthie · 17/01/2026 23:23

I cannot abide mixed fruit in a fruit bowl, for some strange reason (I have no idea why. I also feel the same way about supermarket flowers that are a mixture of flowers... although a beautifully color coordinated bouquet and I can stand a mixture). So I have several fruit bowls, each with only one fruit in it. Lemons, oranges, and limes can be in the same bowl but nothing else.
Bizarre I know.
And soft fruit is in the fridge.

bruffin · 17/01/2026 23:28

I have one with apple orange and banana in.
At work we have a fruit box delivered every 2 weeks which is kept in a fruit bowl.

when i was young in the 60s when had a fruit bowl and little bowls with olives and raddishes out all the time to nibble on.

We have one for apples and oranges and a banana hook for those. Berries are in the fridge though.
My fruit bowl becomes the trifle bowl at Christmas

Edited

Mine too 🤣

Fibrous · 17/01/2026 23:33

Grapes in the fridge in case the dogs eat them, everything else in the fruit bowl, including Mediterranean veg. We get a seasonal fruit and veg box delivered every week so it doesn’t have time to go off, unless you get a rogue squashed thing in the box.

Not rtft but bananas release "something" (lol) that ripens fruit.....I always segregate my bananas. Always had a bowl of "tepid" fruit growing up which is why I always keep ours either in the fridge or outhouse, much prefer it cold.

RainBow725 · 17/01/2026 23:36

I have a fruit bowl but I keep onions and garlic in it! The actual fruit is all in the fridge. I like my apples very cold and rock hard!

Creepybookworm · 17/01/2026 23:40

We have a fruit plate. It's huge, more of a platter. It's from Habitat and is 25 years old. It's ugly to be honest.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinnner · 17/01/2026 23:49

Banana hook. Rest in fridge. We don't eat much fruit.

MargolyesofBeelzebub · 18/01/2026 00:00

I have a tiny kitchen and so I have a collection of fruit at different heights sat upon the various kilner jars of stuff, kind of like a fruit Olympic podium. My bananas do not have their own hooky stand but sit on the countertop... With limited kitchen space their hook would have to dangle from the ceiling. Quite like that idea 😂

sorryIdidntmeanto · 18/01/2026 00:10

I have a fruit bowl. 2 actually. I mostly buy apples and bananas, but we often have kiwis or plums or satsumas. Whatever is cheap and in season. None of it needs to be in the fridge. Our heating isn't on all that much, though.

Splat92 · 18/01/2026 00:29

No fruit bowl here. All fruit goes in the fridge except bananas which just sit on the kitchen bench.

DameOfThrones · 18/01/2026 00:37

Funnily enough I bought a fruit bowl a couple years ago because the fruit just wasn't being eaten as much, when it was out of sight in the fridge.

Since putting a bowl on the dining table, me, DH and DS often swipe a bit of fruit as we walk past.

Whereas if we couldn't see it, we probably wouldn't think about it.

Same and why I went back to having a fruit bowl. It was out of sight out of mind in the fridge

I used to buy fruit in my weekly shop and immediately I'd feel healthier.

Until I realised I wasn't actually eating it! 🤣

My children definitely eat the fruit despite it being out of sight, it’s definitely not out of mind. I wonder how much more they’d eat if I got it out 😱 This might be the basis for a vaguely scientific experiment to while away the dark January days. It could be financially ruinous.

My bananas do not live in the fridge of course, they have a hooky stand like all sensible bananas do.

My bananas are clearly deprived & just live as a bunch on the worktop.. Kiwis, pears & Avocados live in the little trays/boxes they arrive in (on a different worktop.- nowhere near the bananas.

berries go in the fridge, controversially apples do too as I like them cold!

I don't have a fruit biwl as I think it keeps better separated & in the container it comes in. When I buy it loose or it comes in a bag I put it in a cereal or pasta bowl depending on what it is or how much of it there is.

NormasArse · 18/01/2026 01:37

Mine currently has a large lemon, a pineapple (which will be transferred to the fridge once cut), three oranges, and two pears in it. The banana tree has 5 bananas on it.

Fridge fruit is usually berries, but they aren’t great at this time of year, so I don’t tend to buy them until nearer summer.

MinnieMountain · 18/01/2026 05:54

Soft fruit stays in its packaging on the kitchen windowsill. Apples and oranges go in the top of the veg rack under the windowsill.

We always have a fruit bowl when we stay in holiday lets though.

Perrylobster · 18/01/2026 05:57

I have 3! The kids help themselves. I often walk in the room and they’re eating an apple or tangerine
