I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

OP posts:

I've friends in the police and they always used to say 10% plus 2 MPH over the limit for pulling people. Not sure that applies anymore.

I always thought cars overstated speed by 2 MPH,.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/01/2026 22:12

I was once told that the police will pull a driver over for the teeniest, tiniest thing if they suspect something else.

I had to do a course for 32mph

However it was a camera that got me not a person so maybe people are more reasonable and just give a warning, like the OPs did.

Must say it cincentrated my mind on not doing it again!

At least the officer had discretion and didn't issue a ticket.

It's still likely females will be pulled over by male officers, female police are still in the minority, so how do they get around that?

There used to be articles about one day there being 'average speed check cameras' on all roads. It hasn't come to that yet but if they really wanted to, I'm sure they could do that through GPS. Maybe one day that will happen.

I stick to the speed limit, although yes sometimes I realise I've mistakenly gone a few MPH faster than the limit. My cruise control won't do 20. I'm fed up of irate drivers, when you are sticking to the limit behind you, they can't always overtake.

There's a 30 by me on the road where DC gets the bus and has a lot of children waiting. Some drivers tear up it, I would say more near 40. I wonder if these drivers are ever caught - I've never seen a speed trap/monitor in all the time I've lived here.

Driving home at 4 am from the airport last time, on an uneventful Tuesday morning not a soul around, it did feel weird doing 20 MPH as that was what the law is. Maybe they should have more variable speed limits depending on time of day etc, a bit like they do on motorways.

Legislation says speedos can over read up to 10% but 0% under.

Tyre wear or changing the make of tyre can alter what the speedo reads. Brand new tyres will read slower than well worn ones,

I was done for 25 in a 20. The letter said 10% and 2mph margin. Lambeth/Met.

I think the difference is that most people would hold their hands up and call it a fair cop, apologise if it was unintentional, and then try harder not to do it again....

Pretty much the opposite attitude to OP's

More that 50% disagree with you on this poll.

Lol but according to this thread 'traffic' cops are only supposed to book for driving offences, you could have a suitcase of cocaine and a few guns in the back but that's not their remit! Its all about that 2mph😂

Google Maps has a feature that shows your current speed and the current speed limit. Useful!

Yes it does and fab go London which seems to switch 20/30 lots

Endorewitch · 19/01/2026 18:41

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:04

I’m aware. But it’s a human mistake to stray a couple of MPH over, surely? It’s not like I was doing 45!

You were just given a verbal warning. Seems fair to me. Next time it could be 35mph. The verbal warning has done the trick.b

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:13

I just think it’s a bit silly. About two miles away there’s a town full of drug addicts and drunks who make part of the town a no go area. But they’d rather pull over innocent people!

That seems like you are projecting exceptionalism and entitlement!

Yes at 32mph you are breaking the law, and that does make you a criminal regardless of the whataboutary you want to say!

Keep to the speed limit in the future!

Also a ‘town full of drug addicts and drunks’ has no bearing on a speedometer, and you were not an innocent person!

MargoChanningsglass · 19/01/2026 19:24

Op hasn't responded since the vile remark she made yesterday.

Clafoutie · 19/01/2026 19:31

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:08

oh give over. If I was doing 35 I’d understand but a couple of MPH on a clear road with a slight downhill isn’t speeding.

It is still speeding though, as annoying as it is. It’s a matter of the law, not of degree. It would otherwise be like taking a small sweet out of a pick n mix, not paying for it, but saying it wasn’t really stealing. There’s an argument for leeway, but that is indeed what you got as you didn’t get a ticket. I think you were lucky rather than hard done by!

Ownedbykitties · 19/01/2026 19:36

I've been ticketed twice for this. Best to drive at 25 than Rick straying over 30 imo

Pinklemonade1 · 19/01/2026 20:10

We've all done it but if you get busted you cant really blame anyone else but yourself. Even a few mph over 30 will cause more significant harm to a child if you were to hit them.

crazeekat · 19/01/2026 20:16

ridiculous.

Clafoutie · 19/01/2026 20:55

TessSaysYes · 17/01/2026 13:30

2mph over isn't speeding as some of the harpies on here are trying to suggest. I agree with you OP, the cop is kinda wasting his time, when they won't come out to you after a burglary etc
2mph is inside the margin of error for their speed detecting machines, which is why nobody is every prosecuted for being 2mph over.

Maybe some of those ‘ harpies’ have personally experienced how a difference of 2mph can determine the extent of someone’s injuries, or be the difference between survival and death.

MrsScarecrow · 19/01/2026 21:11

Spend more time looking at the speedo rather than the road ahead. Could take your eyes off the road just as a child could run in front of you.Our car beeps at you for doing 1 mile over the limit, beeps when speed limit changes etc. Recently it beeped when we were on a motorway indicating the speed limit was 50 - wrong as no variable speed limit on that motorway. No way do I advocate speeding but a bit of common sense needed.

RavenhairedRachel · 19/01/2026 21:30

A speed limit is there for a reason. You were exceeding it.

GreenFritillary · 19/01/2026 23:05

There's a national push to lower all car speeds and reduce the number of accidents to pedestrians. They are trying to change our mind-sets, as they did with drink-driving and seat belts. Most of the people I know, good, conscientious drivers, have had to choose between points on their licence and going through a tedious 3 hour retraining session, for exactly this level of offence.

The number of fatalities and injuries is dropping.

This idea of a 'war on the motorist' or motorist hatred is nonsense. The law and society treats people differently when behind the wheel. For example, for any other crime other than as a motorist are you allowed a reduced sentence or none at all because it will inconvenience you?

HomeTheatreSystem · 20/01/2026 10:17

As has been stated multiple times the speed limit is the absolute maximum speed you should have been doing. A speed of 27/28 would have been a perfectly acceptable speed to do in a 30 and would have allowed you the leeway to creep up to the max of 30 seeing as you have difficulty with maintaining your car at a low speed. You can always drop down a gear too which would have helped with control.

Instead of feeling victimised, which you weren't, consider that that limit applies to all vehicles on the road from a Micra to an HGV and to all drivers on the road, from the attentive and skilled to drivers like you. You broke the limit (as has probably every driver on here at one time or another), the difference being most of us, if stopped by police, would accept the warning, apologise and go about our day: you, weirdly, feel personally affronted, made worse by pretty much every post you've made on this thread confirming you have poor driving skills and an attitude.

Half the vote think you're NBU which is nothing for you to take comfort from: it just explains all the shit driving out there.

Some people seem to habitually drive at 10mph under the limit just to be safe. I managed to overtake a car a couple of weeks ago in a 20mph limit. I didn’t need to go over 20 to do it.
