I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

I’d never take a black box. My brother got a warning for “anti social” driving, for driving to and from work. He would sometimes work until 4am.

Perhaps he hadn't explained his circumstances fully to the insurance company

As far as I’m aware disclosing your shift pattern to your insurance company isn’t a requirement?

This. YANBU. It's always a shaky feeling when you are confronted by a police officer.

But surely the shakes go as soon as you are aware you aren't being arrested for something serious, just given a warning for a minor speeding issue.

But presumably he explained after their communication and they were then aware?

GrethaGreen · 18/01/2026 11:50

In theory they are right that you were speeding, but it’s almost impossible not to go a tiny little bit both under and over the speed limit occasionally. There is so much proper speeding and dangerous driving out there you’d think the police would have other drivers to contend with before they focused on those doing 2 miles over. So for me it’s overkill.

grumpygrape · 18/01/2026 11:49

No, he waited until his insurance was up for renewal and binned them off. Because what is that about?

I hope you never get pulled over by a lone male in a pretty secluded area. It’s not a built up area, just my town is pretty much all 30mph. Even the main roads and back lanes.

Could you try and paint yourself as a victim here any more?

You were just over the speed limit, you got told off, end of. Whether you disagree with where the police expend their energy is neither here nor there, if you hadn't been speeding, it wouldn't have happened. You are not a victim in this circumstance.

SoScarletItWas · 18/01/2026 12:02

I can’t believe this is still going. A whole thread about that time I didn’t get a speeding ticket 🤣🤣

Boomer55 · 17/01/2026 16:30

Stick to the speed limit. You won’t get pulled over, so no shaking needed.

Sorted.✔️

You've never gone over the speed limit even by 1mph?
Unbelievable.

Where have they said they haven’t ever gone over the limit? I can’t see it in the post you refer to.

Never seen so much rubbish posted about someone who was speeding, didn’t get a ticket, makes a massive fuss about it because they are annoyed.

Flopsythebunny · 18/01/2026 11:42

If it was a requirement of insurance, you wouldn't have a choice.
All motability customers who have a named driver on their insurance under the age of 30 now have to have black boxes fitted to their vehicles.
It wouldn't surprise me if all insurance companies insist on every vehicle being fitted with one in the near future

They will. We will all end up like the Chinese, permanently watched and controlled and punished for minor misdemeanors while the ruling-class do whatever they like with zero consequences for them.

ChopstickNovice · 18/01/2026 12:11

I do think it's a bit excessive esp when they don't come out to burglaries etc (in our area anyway). There must be different budgets for policing areas.

igelkott2026 · 18/01/2026 11:42

Hmmm. I think buying a BMW or Audi is a predictor of increased risk....

It's priced into the premium for the car.

We need to be careful with all this lovely data we are happily hoovering up and storing. The underlying principle of insurance is to spread the risk in a population based on the uncertainty of risk. The more data we have the more we can narrow down the risk and effectively make some people uninsurable (and therefore much more likely to drive without insurance).

The same applies to all these screenings we have these days. A lot of folk will slowly discover they can't get health insurance. Or life insurance.

"Big Data" was a thing that was briefly fought back. However all this "AI" they are so good at is it's bastard son.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/01/2026 12:20

The posters saying that it’s easy not to go over a speed limit or that they’ve never done that are being very, very economical with truth, IMO.

As I’ve said, it’s easy to see how many do go a little over a speed limit by looking at the speed measuring signs. Very many drivers do. I suspect they mostly do slow down after being in the red on one of those signs, so good. But the simple fact is that we all break the limit a little, without any carelessness at all.

I suppose there might be MNers who crawl along at 10mph in a 20 zone or 15mph in a 30 zone. But I doubt it. And posters never seem to accept that 30s turn into 20s frequently, which makes dropping the speed beforehand difficult if you don’t know the road.

Yeh, parking neighbours and speeding always brings lots of traffic 😏

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:13

I just think it’s a bit silly. About two miles away there’s a town full of drug addicts and drunks who make part of the town a no go area. But they’d rather pull over innocent people!

You’d be shaking more if you hit someone and got done for dangerous driving. Just stick to 30 no matter how crazy it seems

Amazed at all these people that seem to have never crept over the speed limit by 2 miles an hour in their entire lives 😂🚔🚘

How many have said that in this thread?

Imdunfer · 18/01/2026 12:44

dialdrunkforyou · 18/01/2026 11:45

Interestingly I’ve just had a google. Toyota tend to build in a 3-5mph overestimation into their speedometers as they can be over, but not under.

So I was likely only doing 29!

How did the police clock you? They won't be using an adjusted speed, they'll be measuring your actual speed, so it's more likely you were doing 32 and your speedo was showing 34-37

I don’t know how many more times I need to say my speedo said 32.
