I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

I don’t know how many more times I need to say my speedo said 32.

It doesn’t matter what your speedo said; his speed measurement instrumentation will be more accurate.

And all he did was warn you, he didn’t give you a ticket.

You can't possibly know what it was showing at the time they actually measured it unless you know the precise moment and were happening to be looking at it at that moment, which you don't; or unless you are staring at your speedo all the time instead of looking at the road. If it genuinely said 32 at that moment, then you were not speeding unless your speedo is set wrong, so why did they stop you? Did they show you the reading?

Ducksbehindthesofa · 18/01/2026 13:22

Many years ago, my SIL was a pedestrian when she was knocked over by a driver who dropped something in the footwell of his car and reached down to retrieve it, swerving onto the pavement in the process.

The driver was doing 36mph in a built-up area. The coroner said if he had been doing 30mph, my SIL the likelihood was that she would have survived her (fatal) injuries.

Saladbrains · 18/01/2026 13:31

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/01/2026 12:20

The posters saying that it’s easy not to go over a speed limit or that they’ve never done that are being very, very economical with truth, IMO.

As I’ve said, it’s easy to see how many do go a little over a speed limit by looking at the speed measuring signs. Very many drivers do. I suspect they mostly do slow down after being in the red on one of those signs, so good. But the simple fact is that we all break the limit a little, without any carelessness at all.

I suppose there might be MNers who crawl along at 10mph in a 20 zone or 15mph in a 30 zone. But I doubt it. And posters never seem to accept that 30s turn into 20s frequently, which makes dropping the speed beforehand difficult if you don’t know the road.

You need to go to Spec Savers.

And use your reading glasses with your car manual.

There are large round speed limit signs.

There are control stalks and buttons on/around the steering wheel for speed limiter, and cruise control, that specifically maintain speed for drivers who need help with that.

Sheer laziness

Well the reason she was hit was because the driver bent down, not because he was speeding.

Did you read that post? The reason she died was the excessive speed.

Oh wow. I didn’t realise Specsavers did glasses that let you see through buses, lorries, fog and rain. And around bends and corners.

I must get some of these Bionic Woman specs.

But I try not to look around me too much anyway, because MN posters tell me I must be aware of my exact speed at all times so I’m largely fixed on the speedometer. 🙄

golemmings · 18/01/2026 13:50

I got done doing 62 up hill in an overtaking lane in a 60.

The guys with the speed guns tend to be the same guys who get to pick up the pieces when someone is speeding and causes an accident. They aren't always that lenient.

Id consider yourself very lucky and stick to the speed limit in future.

OonaStubbs · 18/01/2026 07:27

It's supposed to be 10% of the limit +2 that they pull you over at anyway. Which is 35 in a 30mph zone.

They can pull you over at any speed over the limit. It’s up to them whether or not they actually prosecute or not.

As the OP found out.

NemesisInferior · 18/01/2026 13:55

dialdrunkforyou · 18/01/2026 11:45

Interestingly I’ve just had a google. Toyota tend to build in a 3-5mph overestimation into their speedometers as they can be over, but not under.

So I was likely only doing 29!

You wouldn't have been pulled over if you were doing 29.

Just grow up. You broke the rules; you got caught and you were lucky enough to get just a warning. Accept some personal responsibility like an adult.

Hence the speed limiter control: your eyes are liberated from speedo duty and free to take in speed limit signs and hazards.

Golden rule, if you can’t see through it, slow down enough so that even if it brakes hard, you won’t smash into the rear of it.

Same with rain and blind bends, imagine there’s a stationary 44-ton truck just out of sight, and that given a preference, you wouldn’t want to impale yourself onto the back of it.

Simples. No bionics required.

I don’t have a speed limiter.

And I drive at entirely safe and appropriate speeds and distances behind vehicles of whatever sort, adjusting for conditions.

How close up the exhaust pipe of the vehicle Infront are you if you can't see road signs ? and if the rain or fog is so thick you can't see signs need to slow down, or probably stop anyway.

What? Have you never driven behind a bus, or buses together?

Do you seriously think drivers hang 50 yards behind a bus?

SerendipityJane · 18/01/2026 14:38

The guys with the speed guns tend to be the same guys who get to pick up the pieces when someone is speeding and causes an accident. They aren't always that lenient.

A guy I was at school with (eventually) became a fireman. His first week he was called to a car smash on the A40. It was foggy and a van had inexplicably broken down or stopped in the right hand lane. A Mini Metro with 4 teenagers went into it at well over 60. My friend was sent to look for someones head.

He'd always been a bit "roughie toughie" as we said. But that made him a bit less cavalier about things.

oviraptor21 · 18/01/2026 14:39

Anyone else find it odd that it was a lone police officer? I thought they worked in pairs?

But presumably he explained after their communication and they were then aware?

You really don't see how invasive and bigbrothery this approach is?

Noone should question why are you driving if you aren't drunk or speeding or breaking law in some other way.

SpoonFaces · 18/01/2026 14:51

Piknik · 17/01/2026 13:37

I live in London and most roads are now 20mph. It's almost impossible to keep to it and takes a lot of concentration. I got 3 points and a £120 fine last week for doing 23.

I did exactly the same. I got a ticket and fine for doing 23 in a 20 road during the pandemic. It was 6 am and I was going to the hospital to work. I admit that I had resentful thoughts of outrage as I thought about everybody else staying home, and I was been given a ticket as I was driving to work on the wards at 6 am. But I got over it and have pretty much kept to the speed limit since. Though in 20 mph zones, most people here do not keep to the speed limit unless there is a speed camera.

That's why the op was let off with a warning, maybe it was the end of his shift and he didn't fancy the paperwork. Presumably the police car was following the op for some time before he pulled her over, so she was not only speeding but not keeping an eye on her mirrors, the guys with cameras in vans, on motorway bridges etc, don't pull you over, you get a NIP in the post with a link to download the photo of you breaking the law.

Do you drive “at entirely safe and appropriate speeds”

Do you break the speed limits “a little”

Do you lie when it suits you?
