And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

OP posts:

I was 28 when I lost my 'mum' but I stilled called her mummy.
My 5 year old son mostly calls me momma, sometimes mummy, sometimes Mum.. my 9 year old son does same, my 20 year old daughter calls me mummy or momma....as long as its not my actual name I'm good but I understand the sadness of name change, the feeling of them growing up.

LT1233 · 17/01/2026 20:53

It is actually really sad when this happens but you get over it quite quickly tbh.

My youngest calls my husband by his actual name and it drives him completely mad, waited his life tk become a dad and his son calls him his government name lol.

My sons also call me bro, brah, fam, mate...

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

Same

Fionuala · 17/01/2026 21:05

For goodness sake!!

Missyousomuchmum · 17/01/2026 21:15

He was 4 when he called me mum for the first time.
One of his few precious words as he's mostly non verbal.

EdinaTheConfessor · 17/01/2026 21:18

My 11 year old DS still calls me mummy. Or bummy 🙄

Bryyan · 17/01/2026 21:23

My eldest grandson who is 17 and 6’2”calls me Gaga but when I told him he can call me granddad as Gaga is a bit babyish. He replied quite firmly No!

RAPSMom · 17/01/2026 21:25

My Niece in her mid 50’s still calls her Mom, Mommy…

Hithismyname · 17/01/2026 21:28

My three year old girl calls me mam, changed from mammy over the past few months.

BingleyWardman · 17/01/2026 21:30

I have to put up with being called "Pops",

DanceMumTaxi · 17/01/2026 21:39

Mine are 13 and 10 and still call me mummy at home. They’d say mum in front of friends though.

Bonkers1966 · 17/01/2026 21:43

It will all be grand.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 17/01/2026 21:47

My DD were similar ages when they made the switch from Mummy to Mum. I think they wanted to feel grown up. It didn't last very long, I was usually Mum in public and Mummy in private (particularly if they were trying to wheedle something out of me)!

They are in their thirties now and are as likely to call me Mummy as Mum.

I have to admit I get a warm fuzzy when they spontaneously call me Mummy in front of other people. It makes me feel special.

YippyKiYay · 17/01/2026 22:22

My DS has called us "mother" and "father" since about 14 (I think he saw it on the Simpsons), or alternatively "small parent" and "tall parent". 😭

Mumptynumpty · 17/01/2026 22:32

I'm muvs. Or mummy. Or the mama.

They are all grown.

Booboobagins · 17/01/2026 22:40

I am mother, mum and marg depending upon what they want! 23 and 24 yo. I don't recall they ever called us mummy and daddy because we called ourselves mum and dad.

SnappyJadeJoker · 17/01/2026 22:47

My 3 year old has always called me mum, my 13 year old calls me bro, mate and my actual name so... its all downhill from here 🤣

KrimboBell · 17/01/2026 23:00

I’m Welsh and am called Mam - used to be mammy

Blinkingbother · 17/01/2026 23:01

18 yo ds with the most incredibly deep voice most often refers to me as Mummy - he doesn’t give a 💩 what other people think, dd 16 calls me by my first name because she says I respond to it quicker than Mum/mummy…. She’s right, I started to fine tune the first 5 ‘Mummy/Mum’s out years ago😂

My DC were quite young too but rather bizarrely - and cute - my DD in late teens now calls me Mama.

Carycach4 · 17/01/2026 23:14

Uncommon to still say mummy from year one up

Clingfilm · 17/01/2026 23:25

Welsh here - mine have only ever called me mam but my siblings and I still call refer to, and call our parents mammy and daddy.

Solidarity with all those who alter the U to A on mum greeting cards ✊🏼

Aghhhhhhhhhh · 17/01/2026 23:30

Nobody tell OP about the transition from mum to brah/bro when they get to about 12....

Strongle · 17/01/2026 23:34
