And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

I call them “famalan.” I know fine well that it’s meant to be “famalam” but I do it to be annoying. I also pronounce it “Fam-Alan.”

mwah ha ha

I'm having this.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 13/01/2026 12:56

I get mummieeeeeee when dd(27) wants something.Grin Can't remember when I became mum, probably about 7. Ds2 (34) has inexplicably started calling me Ma.

GloriousGiftBag · 13/01/2026 12:56

I think it evolves all the time. My teens quite often call me Mumma now!

Theres v few people in the world who can call you these names, whatever they are. Still special.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 13/01/2026 12:57

Bruh or Bro here too atm! 🤣

hellotojason · 13/01/2026 12:57

My DD was about 7/8 when she did the same, it's all a natural part of growing up. I do remember it feeling sad and a bit of an end of an era at the time but got to let them grow up. Fairly soon it will feel completely normal and of course it won't affect how much they love you or your relationship.

marginallyawake · 13/01/2026 12:58

Mine have always used mum, I absolutely detest mummy and so didn’t encourage it.

Peridot1 · 13/01/2026 12:58

Went straight from Mummy to Mother as far as I remember. Mainly to annoy me as he knows I don’t like it. He’s 24 now.

Borgonzola · 13/01/2026 12:58

3! I don’t like it but not much I can do….

Knittedfairies2 · 13/01/2026 12:58

Wait until she decides you're to be known as Ma, and her father as Pa...

101SpottyDogs · 13/01/2026 12:58

I read this as DH instead of DD and clicked with horror 😂

but yes, it’s very sad. Youngest, DS is 6 and has been calling me mum like older DS for at least a year now 😭

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

Oh yes, both of mine (25 and 17) use that to wind me up.

7 is probably around when mine transitioned to calling me mum - they pick it up at school.

RobinEllacotStrike · 13/01/2026 12:59

My DD's are 18 & 14 and still both call me Mummy.
Their friends say they do this because we are "posh".
We are far far far far from being posh 😁

I wouldn't mind if they called me Mum, but I do love still being called Mummy.

They also call me my name from time to time which we all find hilarious. And they use shortened versions of my middle name as a joke name.

And yes I get called Bro & Bruv too.

AgentPidge · 13/01/2026 13:00

About the same age.

My friend (in her 60s) still says Mummy and Daddy and it sounds ridiculous to me, as if she's still a baby. Her choice, of course - I would never say anything.

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

I mean, you could say that if you want to, but surely it would be better to be guided by what she wants? Mine says mummy to me, but calls me mum to her friends.

Butchyrestingface · 13/01/2026 13:01

Mum’ was what I called my late mother most often but she was treated to the full gamut depending on my mood so - mammy, mumsie, mother, mama, mamma.

Never mom though. I’m not American. Or from Birmingham:

Mamabearandcubs · 13/01/2026 13:02

My 2 year old calls me mum rather than mummy

Toastythesnowman · 13/01/2026 13:02

DC8 has called me mum since he was about 6/7, bit interchangeable with mummy still. He did call me "mate" the other day which got him a well deserved glare. DC5 still uses mummy.

DH has been Dad to both of them since they were both about 4 with the occasional use of his real name.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 13/01/2026 13:02

My DS is 17 and really had to train himself over the past year to stop calling me Mummy (because he wanted to). It still slips out occasionally but probably only in the past 6 months I’ve been more Mum than Mummy.

But when he started calling me Mum, my DDs did as well and they are 13 and 7. They sometimes use Mama or Mummy (respectively and usually when they want something!) but I do feel like I’m mainly Mum now.

Yes. Sad as it is, you need to let her grow up. We've all been there.

This.

Meadowfinch · 13/01/2026 13:05

My ds switched at 7. Your dd isn't a baby any more. Let her call you mum.

At least it's better than Mater !

SarahAndQuack · 13/01/2026 13:05

Mine is 8 and started doing it about two weeks ago. I must admit it gives me a tiny pang but I am aware I am being daft. Mind you, when she was ill we were back to 'mummy'.

I remember being gutted when she was a toddler - she used to call us both 'mama' (same sex parents) or, extremely charmingly, she used 'my' with our firstnames ('my Sarah'). I think she'd heard other children say 'my mummy' and that was her version.

I do miss that. Grin

Snap! I think it was her idea of a compromise between stopping 'mummy' but not using 'mum' 😅I've been 'mother' for years now!

TrioOfTwats · 13/01/2026 13:06

It could be worse. When I was about six, I found out my mum had an actual name - Sandra. It blew my mind and I thought it was very grown up to call her by her name like adults did. So I started called her Sandra aged six, and I've never stopped.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 13/01/2026 13:06

My TWO YEAR OLD started calling us mum and dad at the weekend. So you have nothing to complain about!
