And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

Your lucky my 7 year old calls me ‘bruh’ 🙄

dadopter57 · 17/01/2026 23:41

Our boys (aged 13 & 16) still call us mummy and daddy, but only at home, they know we love it, and they indulge us - I wouldn't want it any other way. Love my boys...

CuriousEgg · 17/01/2026 23:46

My 4 year old still calls me mama every so often. Mostly it’s when she hasn't seen all day and is a bit surprised by my appearance. It makes me sad to think the last time I hear her call me mama has either happened or is just around the corner.

I’m saved as Spawnpoint in DS3’s phone, but he calls me Mum when he’s talking to me.

Sid9nie · 17/01/2026 23:52

I get mama from my late teen . He never called me that when he was little.

" saved as Spawnpoint in his phone" 🤣🤣. That is very funny and cute! I like that a lot!

I have a couple names; saved as Mom in the phone (despite not being American). Referred to as Mama at home if calling me or referring to me. This seemed to have naturally evolved from mummy (maybe because he has a "nana" which his older relatives use for a grandparent). I actually do / did not like being called mama at all but it just stuck. I was mummy for a while and he did interchange very occasionally to mum but rare.

Being 12 now I have suggested he uses mum, to which he responds that he does when he talks to mates e.g My mum does so and so. However in earshot of a couple of mates he recently he referred to me as Mama!!!

No harm no foul and noone seem bothered.

May e I should cherish it, given there is a good possibility it seems (from above posts) that I am soon to be "brah, fam, etc 🤣🤣".

I may well start promoting Spawnpoint though. 🤣

Shakespearandi · 18/01/2026 00:15

Mummy by my 14 year old and 10 year old. Mama by my 12 year old. All fine. My 14 year old called me by my name from age 2-4 years old. It was adorable too.

OnceatHome · 18/01/2026 00:17

Our 2 sons, aged 5 snd 7, came as a formal delegation together to ask if they could stop using "mummy". How could I refuse?!

LEWWW · 18/01/2026 00:21

My 3 year old calls me mam 🤣 has never called me mammy 🤣 I don’t mind, I’m still the favourite person in the world 🥹

Pinepeak2434 · 18/01/2026 01:28

I’m not sure but I feel with my eldest son he called my mummy longer because I had younger ones who did. I think he was perhaps 8 and the only reason he did was because my toxic father made fun of him for calling me mummy (sometime my father used to also do to my cousins).

debster275 · 18/01/2026 07:37

yep, been there, so sad. It's school xx

Wingingit73 · 18/01/2026 07:54

Normal.

Coco1379 · 18/01/2026 08:38

My 45 yo DD calls me Mum, Mummy (usually exasperated voice) or Moomy - a reference to the Moomintrolls!

Fancyahobnob · 13/01/2026 12:55

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

Unless she is being outright offensive, and calling you a bad name, why would you want to 'correct' her?

You don't want her walking on eggshells double checking what she's saying before she opens her mouth and getting paranoid about her words, do you?

My parents still pick me up on grammar when I use slang, which is hilarious at my age, but they have never corrected me for using mum/mummy daddy etc.

That would be weird and over scrutinising.

My 15 year old lad still calls me mummy. I have told him it's ok to call me mum but he says it feels disrespectful to do so lol

DearDenimEagle · 18/01/2026 10:35

I’d hate to be called mummy. I’ve never known anyone that used that and it sounds cringey. However , I was reading a book one day when my then 2 yr old came into the room through the door behind me. When I read, I’m absorbed, and there’s a time lapse in my head before things register. It was his last shouted name that got me but I realised he’d been there a few seconds longer..he’d come in calling, Mum, mu-um , …..then impatiently, mother!….pause ,sing song, Jessica…..pause, my husbands nickname for me ( somewhat embarrassing) , and finally shouted WOMAN!

🤣

Does he say it in public? My dc is younger, says Mum in public and the more "babyish" versions at home, school kids can be cruel!

hollystar500 · 18/01/2026 10:52

My 5 year old son has just stopped calling me mummy and it makes me chuckle as he’s still gets in our bed every single night and is stuck to my side at every opportunity.

Aww, at just 2? I used to call my Mum "mother", but it was in a passive aggressive trying to annoy her way! 🫢

Flopsyj · 18/01/2026 11:43

Be grateful.. I went straight from mummy to mother!!! They are growing up and as far as I’m concerned as long as they are polite I don’t care

Strongle · 17/01/2026 23:34

Not in Northern Ireland!!

Yep this is what i said further on up the thread. We say it until we die. Except me as I use her first name but my siblings do not.

That child did not say all that Jessica.

I daren’t write what I actually think about this post. Jeez

That child did…he went through every name some used for me.. He was able to hold complete conversations so you’d forget how young he was. Shame he wasted his intelligence …edited to add, it was only, mum mum mother Jessica x Woman …I was trying to convey the mood, too

He actually called me ‘mum’ but was not getting a response to that, so worked through every name he knew for me 🤣 His father usually called me the nickname…or Woman, depending on his mood
