And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

OP posts:
tinytemper66 · 15/01/2026 12:11

I still call my mother Mammy and I will be 60 soon.

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

My friends kids call her by her Christian name.

pilates · 15/01/2026 13:03

it’s not a big deal

Sartre · 15/01/2026 13:10

My teenage DC still call me mummy when no one is around. They’d be mortified if their friends knew this but yeah, they definitely do and that includes almost 16 yo DS. He’s 6 foot tall. He will say “mummy told me to do x”. I find it really sweet and never challenge it.

My friends kids call her by her Christian name.

My friend did this at school. Her parents were a lot older than most, they’d had a child in their 20s and said they’d never have another. She was a complete surprise when they were late 40s so they were early 60s when we were at school- a good 20 years on most of our parents at least. She called them by their first names, we all thought it was totally wild.

IMTHECRAZYOLDLADY · 15/01/2026 13:16

My dd went through a phase of calling me mother

SquigglePigs · 15/01/2026 13:16

DD is (just) 7 and mostly still calls me Mummy or Mama but the odd Mum has come in over the last year.

Same with DH - Daddy most of the time, occasional Dada or Dad.

It's about right at this age but I'm still going to miss it when it goes completely so YANBU to be a bit sad about it.

newrubylane · 15/01/2026 13:34

Thinking back I was about 8 or 9 when I switched, I think. One of my 6 year olds occasionally drops a 'mum' in. I'll be sad when 'mummy' stops forever though.

McGregor33 · 15/01/2026 13:41

My 12 year old still calls me mummy, still says I love you a million times& ends the phone call with a blowing a kiss. Even front of her friends, it’s started to rub off on some of her friends who’ve started it with their mum 🥰

pineapplecrushed · 15/01/2026 14:28

7, because a friend made fun of him. It was a sad day.

Another pointless post.

Yes, your right there’s definitely a class element to it as well.

Strange, because in our part of the country, mummy is regarded as childish and quite common.

Rosealea · 15/01/2026 15:39

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BaliByName · 15/01/2026 16:00

My 5 year old has called me mum for the last 6 months and now her 3 year old brother copies :(
Im still hoping its just a phase 😆

SurvivalInstinctsOfABakedPotato · 15/01/2026 16:39

I've never been mummy. Usually mum or ma

Recently he's been calling me babushka because I wore a flowery hairband once for about an hour and apparently I looked like a Russian doll.
He's 15 and thinks he's hilarious

GlomOfNit · 15/01/2026 23:08

My very sweet older boy was happy to say 'mummy' in public until about 14 and then I think he realised it sounded childish ... I was still mummy in private though. At 16 he asked me to please stop referring to DH as 'daddy' if I was talking about DH to my son in public, and I was mortified! Grin Poor DS. We're just mum and dad now but I have a feeling that he thinks of us as mummy and daddy inside his head - it was too deeply ingrained. (we're not upper class 😂)

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 15/01/2026 23:55

Don't remember ever calling my female parent mum, think we went from mummy to mother 😂 now we still call her by a nickname or mother! She's 83 and was a very good mum (apart from the mad years i.e. menopause lol). It's affection to us, we call our dad by his first name too half the time. Don't have kids but I'm pretty sure after the mummy stage they could have called me what they liked! It actually feels more special to us calling our old parents 'other'. Don't force your kid to keep calling you mummy, they'll resent you for babying them.

😂😂😂😂😂 love it!

AN91 · 16/01/2026 00:35

If it makes you feel better, OP, my 3.5yr old has been calling me ‘Muvvvaaaa’ for months! Usually when she is trilling my ‘name’ from another part of the house and is excitable! I’m still ‘Mama’ 99.9% of the time,(thankfully)! It’s super cute and just makes me laugh 😂 No idea where she got it from 🤷🏻‍♀️

rosyvalentine · 16/01/2026 11:20

Mine still calls me Mommy and she's 19! Except when we're out in company or her friends are around - then I'm Mum. DS started calling me Mum when he was about 15.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 16/01/2026 12:05

Mine are 8&10 and use mama/mum/mummy interchangeably. My own mum used to insist on 'mummy' which I found incredibly embarrassing as a teen so I'd try and avoid addressing her directly. We eventually compromised on "mama". No idea why it was such a big deal to her. It doesn't bother me at all

Crazymum128 · 16/01/2026 17:29

My grown up daughters call me "motherage" or "motheridge " and have done since their late teens x

MartySupremeisascream · 16/01/2026 17:43

SlenderRations · 15/01/2026 08:51

”Mummy” is a perfectly normal title for a much larger group of society than just the royal family.

I’m with the op - would not have tolerated “mum”.

"mummy" is favoured by those wishing to emulate the aristocrats who first started using it as one of many ways to distinguish themselves from the rest of us "commoners". Personally, I think any adult who calls their mother "mummy" sounds like a prat.

I think anyone who thinks they should have an opinion about what someone else calls their mother needs a hobby.

ItsameLuigi · 17/01/2026 11:05

My 6(7 in feb) year old has just the past 2 weeks done the same!! She calls me mum now. My 8 year old has autism and a speech disorder and still calls me mummy though so at least one of them does 😆. My daughter did try calling me Mother but I was like oh absolutely not. I don't like it because as a teen that is what i called my mum and we had / have a dreadful toxic relationship
