Not many people are attractive

Hear me out.

I’ve downloaded a few dating apps over the past week or so. I’m actually astonished by how many people are unattractive. I know beauty is subjective,
so let’s say conventionally attractive for the sake of this thread. But what on earth?

I know there are good looking people out there because I see plenty on social media. But I hardly ever notice anyone out and about that is OBVIOUSLY gorgeous. When I do see them it’s a head turning kind of energy but is that because it’s so few and far between?

im bi so I’m talking about men and women here. Aside from not being naturally conventionally attractive people seem to take no pride in appearance in how they dress, how they maintain themselves, their body/figures, teeth even!! Nobody seems to “make the best of themselves” iyswim

fwiw I know there’s much more to a person than their appearance but when on a dating app usually the first thing you’re looking at is if you fancy them.

aibu?

Don't swipe right if you see my profile please

I think it’s the opposite, there aren’t very many people who are unattractive, they are the minority.

Agree, I can usually find something attractive in a person even if they don't wholly float my boat.

MangaKanga · 12/01/2026 16:32

I think the opposite. A natural face without Botox or fake tan, but with a smile? Gorgeous.

Dogs are even more gorgeous, but humans are adorable, too.

ChicJoker · 12/01/2026 16:34

AllJoyAndNoFun · 12/01/2026 15:38

I'd agree with that, but based on society rather than dating apps. I'd say roughly 1/10 people is actively attractive (and even then there's a sliding scale), most are just unremarkable and then about 1/25 is actively bad looking.

I do think there are more actively good looking people than really ugly people though.

Anyway, I cant talk as I'm looking pretty minging today but I can scrub up ok and I look a lot better in summer.

I would completely agree with this actually

JHound · 12/01/2026 16:34

Yep. Most people are average. That’s why it’s called “average”.

The ugly and the attractive are minorities.

However there is far more to be attractive than merely physical attractiveness which you cannot assess on dating apps.

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 12/01/2026 16:35

Dating apps apparently show you people of similar attractiveness. No idea how this is calibrated, though. Numbers of people who swipe right on you, maybe? Number of responses to messages?

I think the attractiveness of people ‘in the wild’ is very dependent on where you are. I remember certain bits of Manhattan and LA where everyone seemed to be stunning. I’ve also found that people in the wealthier and/or cooler bits of London tend to be gorgeous.

I’d say most people are reasonably attractive, on average. Or can be, if they fancy it that day (very few of us have the time for the necessary titivation on a daily basis). Youth is also really helpful.

ChicJoker · 12/01/2026 16:35

FeliciaFancybottom · 12/01/2026 15:59

Are you counting yourself in that observation as well, OP?

No i’m very beautiful and stylish and make an effort to look good in some capacity every day. I’m not short of offers I assure you 😂

I also think most people look better in motion than in a static shot, so plenty of people you'd say no to based on a photo you'd might quite like in real life

KaleidoscopeSmile · 12/01/2026 16:37

What an unpleasant shallow thread.

MidnightMeltdown · 12/01/2026 16:39

Unfortunately, we Brits aren’t exactly known for our good looks:

Have to say, whenever I go abroad, the average person is usually a lot better looking than the average Brit. I think a lot of it comes down to diet, dress sense, and poor grooming.

'Why are the British so ugly?' and more of the most Googled questions about the UK

A new study into Europeans’ most popular Google searches might elevate the Brexit debate to an even more awkward level.

Balloonhearts · 12/01/2026 16:41

I don't really have a type, looks wise tbh. They don't have to be conventionally attractive. I know a man who is not what you'd call handsome, bit on the short side, look like a strong breeze could have him over.

But he's really kind, laughs easily and has a very infectious smile. So I fancy the pants off him. Not to be unfortunately as he is married but a good example of not needing to be handsome to be attractive.

My DH would have had no chance if internet dating was a thing 30 odd years ago. He’s the least photogenic person ever and his smile in photos can be bordering on scary!

How shallow to ever use the terms ‘bad looking’ or ‘ugly’ in respect of another human being. People are so much more than the sum of their perceived physical attractiveness. Who are you to say that a person is ‘ugly’. Such a sad and immature attitude.

AgnesX · 12/01/2026 16:50

I think it's down to personality. A lot of people aren't conventionally good looking but you can see their attractiveness when in conversation.

Intelligence behind the eyes helps immensely.

Nincompoo · 12/01/2026 16:51

I’ve never really fancied anyone from what they look like, it’s all about personality for me.

I’d be so shit at online dating… hope I never have to do it!

If you’re that hot why have you had to resort to online dating? 🤣

Yawn I was waiting for that.
Like I said I’m not short of offers. It’s wanting to take the offers up that’s the problem

Which country do you live in? Lol. I think that does make a difference.

They've probably been snapped up already! I had a housemate who was drop dead gorgeous, professional model, just general all round 10/10 person and she married the man she'd been dating since they were both 14.

I’d love to show you one but as it’s an anonymous forum I’ll pass thanks. I can describe myself if you’d like?
