If Trump offered you £1 million to vote for your country to become part of US, would you?

This is hypothetically one of the options available to Greenlanders.

We're Scottish. I say no, DH says take the money and move.

Sorry, for some reason I can't enable voting. I get a No Entry sign

No. I actually do care about this country. I’ve never gone in for the flag shagging type of patriotism, but I do care about my country and all of its people.

Also, on a more pragmatic level, surely if 50% or more of us had £1 million, then it would be worth a lot less?

Toucan123 · 10/01/2026 01:05

Even if he did pay everyone a million quid he'd get it back somehow by making them all pay huge taxes or fees or something. And they'd have to pay for their own healthcare which would be absolutely extortionate.

ClareBlue · 10/01/2026 01:09

Greycheck · 10/01/2026 01:00

Yes definitely. There's not much I wouldn't do for a million tbh.

Historical evidence would indicate about 99.9 percent of humans would act exactly the same as you. Though around 99.9 percent wouldn't like to think they would.😂

Greenland is heavily dependent on Danish healthcare staff from Denmark or rely on treatment in Denmark.
It is a great thing to be able to pay for healtcare but the risk is that there is no one left to treat the patients.
The US hardly staffs hospitals if USA is in charge.

FatEndoftheWedge · 10/01/2026 01:17

Trump thinks either china or Russia will grab it if he doesn't have ownership he said on his press conference he won't have china or Russia as neighbour ...so if that was the real choice ,Russia ,China or USA then yes I'd take the money and go USA

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 10/01/2026 01:17

Not if he offered me £1trillion

ClareBlue · 10/01/2026 01:20

Google Republic of Nauru to see what giving an Island economy excessive wealth to its inhabitants can do. They had no problem in taking the cash but there's a moral lesson there for us all, I think.

But it's not the real choice,it's just more musings from that deranged lunatic.
Venezuela was never about drugs nor is Greenland about US security.
Trump doesn't do anything unless there's dollars involved.

If the offer was China, Russia, or the US, that would be hard, because honestly, the US doesn't feel any better or safer than China and Russia right now.

Could I opt for option D and appeal to Canada to put in an offer?

Why not Denmark? The Greenlanders are Danish citizens.

I was assuming Denmark wanted rid of us and wasn't an option, but yeah, Denmark would also work, or Sweden or Norway. Sadly, in the current climate, I am struggling to think of many more countries that are not close to following the US in its descent into madness, but I'm open to suggestions.

ClareBlue · 10/01/2026 01:30

If you are poor or marginalised from your society then it doesn't matter if Denmark or USA or China or Russia are your government. You are still poor and struggling to feed your children. You will take the million. If you have ten million in the bank and have validity and are heard in your society then maybe you might consider not taking the million. But if you have 10 million then you know an opportunity when you see one and are going to take the million and use your cash to protect yourself.

I haven't read anything indicating that Denmark wants to sell Greenland?

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 10/01/2026 01:31

I’d take it. Realistically if Trump wants Greenland he is just going to take it, who is going to stop him? Look at what just happened in Venezuela!

Nor have I, I was operating under the theoretical terms of the OP.

Realistically, will Denmark ever consider Trump's proposal? Would the EU allow them to even if they did?

Trump's interest in Greenland is worrying because I wouldn't put it past him to create a scenario in which he has to invade it, but other than he's talking bollocks, as per.

Flibberteegibbet · 10/01/2026 01:34

Absolutely not, no way!

LancashireButterPie · 10/01/2026 01:42

Right now, I feel China is less of a threat than the US. We have several friends who came over from Hong Kong following the handover to china. They didnt want to live under Chinese rule, weirdly they have all returned to Hong Kong now as realised they liked it better there even with Chinese rule.

LovesLabradors · 10/01/2026 01:43

No, not least because he'd never pay up.
The whole thing makes me feel slightly sick, because it's so similar to what happened to the Native Americans. They started out by "buying" the land, then often didn't pay, then got more & more aggressive until they were just thrown off their land.
History repeats.

No I don't think Denmark will ever want to trade with Trumph as Denmark know Denmark can't sell Greenland. Denmark isn't a banana state.
Greenland doesn't seem to have any wish to be a part of USA.

Being in NATO "everything ends" if USA attacks another NATO country I think I read the Danish PM said. But Denmark and EU navigate this with a Potus not following the rules at all.

It's so f*cked, sorry.

FatEndoftheWedge · 10/01/2026 01:44

Can Denmark defend Greenland against China or Russia i think that's the issue

FatEndoftheWedge · 10/01/2026 01:46

@LancashireButterPie really ?
How odd ?
I also know some people from hong Kong who can't live there and prefer it here because they don't want to live there.

They also have other EU states, e.g Germany and France. There is a chance they could persuade Turkey to join them, and that right there is how WW3 will start.

Potfullofstuff · 10/01/2026 01:50

It's not how economics works. Some things are scarse resources, like houses, if everyone could afford an 800k house with no mortgage, they would rapidly increase in price.

It works well for resources that aren't scarse.

So it would mean I would be comfortable to buying clothes, food etc. As long as no one is greedy with toilet roll again. But I'd have the same house.

So no

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 09/01/2026 22:46

I'd take the money but vote against him regardless. Making money off of promising one thing and doing the opposite is his modus operandi so it would only be fitting to do the same to him.

That's what I'd do too - take the money and vote against. It's a secret ballot, so we'd get away with it.

The UK are recognised as serious allies to European countries in this situation and in Ukraine. Look at the recent announcement between France and Germany and UK with regard to Ukrainian security and participation of the UK. The EU countries absolutely recognise the importance of the UK but the EU as an Institution still has issues with the UK not following their social agenda. They act like pertinent teenagers whilst their member states that see the actual threats are working outside the EU echo chamber. Recent announcements on Ukraine have not been EU announcements but announcements between individual countries and the UK. Because they know the UK is a strong Allie, as it always has been, long before the EU Commission started dictating to Countries how to run themselves.
