Oh god those immediately saying yes I'll take the money, without thinking or even reading on here, the implications make me angry about the Brexit referendum all over again.
It's ok to be thick as fck a bit ignorant about politics and the economy etc, but it's not ok to completely ignore the facts that are presented to you.
I get it, I'm skint too and a million pounds would change my life completely - but not like this.

My immediate thought about Greenland was, they get free healthcare, decent maternity leave, employment protection , sick pay, brilliant annual leave and decent welfare - all of which are lacking for many people in the US .

I hadn't even considered the inflation side of things if a large sum was given to everyone - so obvious now.

Depends which country. For most countries on earth, becoming a US state would be a massive economic upgrade, expansion in life opportunities, increase in democratic and civil rights for the population, expansion of social safety net, etc.

For the UK: no, as the gap isn't quite as stark. There's a poverty/sovereignty trade-off, and I'm happy to take a little bit of poverty for the sovereignty.

(Interesting that this is basically an economics-vs-sovereignty question, and this MN thread seems massively on the side of sovereignty, whereas on Brexit MN threads choosing sovereignty over prosperity usually is seen as something only thicko rubes would do).
