If Trump offered you £1 million to vote for your country to become part of US, would you?

This is hypothetically one of the options available to Greenlanders.

We're Scottish. I say no, DH says take the money and move.

Sorry, for some reason I can't enable voting. I get a No Entry sign

We really are paying the price for having become so dependent on the US for national/continental security.

We placed far too much trust in the US remaining a reliable ally (and even ignored warnings from the US).

These days, I live in Canada (and close to the US border). I'd sooner take up a gun against a US invasion than take a bribe to accept subjugation.

That said, Canada has some 40m people - while it'd be vastly overpowered, it might be able to put up enough of a fight to dissuade the US from proceeding or continuing with an invasion.

Greenland's >50k population though? The invasion will be over before it starts. There's a reasonable argument for just taking the money.

No.

My impression is that a lot of Danes would be happy to save the money. These 50.000 people and country cost a lot to run for Denmark but the Danes aren't happy to be bullied as former PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt said to Sky News on Friday.

OonaStubbs · 10/01/2026 02:50

If they do it in Greenland, could the Greenlanders take the million and move to Denmark itself?

Most of the Greenlandish people wouldn't thrieve in Denmark and they would certainly loose their culture and language. Denmark is very different than Greenland. Getting a job supporting yourself and your family would be hard for many.
A million Danish kroner dont buy a lot btw if you need to relocate/rent/buy a place to live in Denmark.

No, but I might vote to negotiate drilling for ores (under strict environmental guidelines and for a set time) and him paying royalties to every person directly.

araiwa · 10/01/2026 03:41

I'd take the cash then vote no

sellotapechicken · 10/01/2026 05:24

No

estrogone · 10/01/2026 05:27

Nope. Not even for $10m

ConcernedOfClapham · 10/01/2026 05:47

RudolphTheReindeer · 09/01/2026 22:35

No, but what happens if some say yes and some say no? If I thought it would end up happening anyway I'd take the money.

Oh good point; what if it’s a 52-48% split? 🥴

Thoseslippers · 10/01/2026 06:45

The upsetting thing is id probably consider it but in the end no i dont think i could do it...
There probably is a sum that would buy me but a million is too low. Because American government is awful and I really really hate Trump. A million wouldn't be enough to escape society enough that you wouldn't suffer consequences from being under that government. Christ its probably not even enough to cover a year of healthcare costs.
I do know some lovely Americans and I do think America is a beautiful and interesting country.
But Trump is a populist nightmare i dont want anything to do with.

mjf981 · 10/01/2026 06:45

For 1 million pounds? Absolutely.
Then I'd sell up and move to New Zealand or somewhere equally as far away.

RedRiverShore6 · 10/01/2026 06:48

I certainly would

RedRiverShore6 · 10/01/2026 06:49

I don't think it is a million though, sure I saw about £100k, perhaps he's upped it.

thetruthshallsetyoufreebutfirstitwillpissyouoff · 10/01/2026 06:49

It's interesting from a social experiment perspective- when will the money be paid? Could you take it and then vote no? Or is it only paid if the overall vote is yes? And then only to those who opted in? Heck of a gamble to say no to the cash if everyone else says yes and votes yes.

Presumably the offer is that he'll pay everyone if a vote goes his way so no decision needed other than voting?

Anyway - my answer is I don't know. I'd like to say no, but in reality I don't know. Trump won't be there forever...

Londonnight · 10/01/2026 07:20

No!

Bringemout · 10/01/2026 07:28

Didn’t the Danes use forced contraception on Greenlanders? I believe there is an independence movement. If I thought it was better for my people then yes I would, it doesn’t matter if it’s Trump specifically or not, would I be better off under the USA? I would worry that having extensive American bases on my land would make me a target in the event of all out war. Also the behaviour of american soldiers in Okinawa has in the past been horrific, believe there were some rapes etc. I just don’t think Greenlanders are particularly fond of Denmark either. Rock and a hard place really.

They would be better off declaring independence and renting land to America. But it’s such a small population I’m not sure there would be enough capacity for self governance, hospitals, education etc. Either way I’d want more than a million dollars.

OonaStubbs · 10/01/2026 00:44

If it came along with US citizenship I would take it in a heartbeat.

Christ, why?! Who wants to be a US citizen nowadays? 😂

LostittoBostik · 10/01/2026 07:58

God no.

Toastersandkettles · 10/01/2026 08:02

I'd want to say no, but my fear would be that the majority would say yes. Then I'd be a million down compared to everyone else and even worse off than before.

Hazlenuts2016 · 10/01/2026 08:12

No because if someone in our family got ill we could quite easily spend that on their insane health care system

Twiglets1 · 10/01/2026 08:15

I would if I lived in Greenland.

Not living in the UK, as I do.

Fangisnotacoward · 10/01/2026 08:20

No, for a few reasons.

Morally I couldn't.
I wouldnt trust him to actually pay the money.
Everyone around me will also be as rich, so there wouldnt be a personal benefit as everything price wise would also adjust, houses etc, so I doubt it would actually mean a better life.
I dont want to be American.
I dont want to be part of America's way of life and culture, its very different to my own.
The money would disappear very very quickly as soon as I or my family became ill.

Pacificsunshine · 10/01/2026 08:31

Everybody calm down about Miami. It was just a professor satirising Trump’s potential offer. I found it funny.

I think the money is by the by. The question is whether they would be offered US citizenship and if do, whether they would want it.

Frequency · 10/01/2026 11:28

Trump on Greenland: "Just because they landed a boat there 500 years ago does not mean they own the land. We had boats land there also..."

How did America become inhabited and "owned" by white Americans, again? I've forgotten.
