I know it's unpopular but I LOVE the feeling of January. Everything just feels clean and big again. The year spreading ahead. Anyone else love it like me?

I like it. It's lovely and sunny today in Dublin. I'm happily looking forward.

AndeanFlamingo · 02/01/2026 14:02

I feel exactly the same way about January. I find November and December stressful and depressing but as soon as January hits I can feel everything lift as the days start to lengthen and life starts to feel good again.

Mumsnet is such a weird place. I totally get that Christmas is not for everyone but it feels like a necessity for MN members to completely hate it, almost like a personality trait.

It feels like a weirdly middle-aged woman's way of being edgy 😅

Sexist and ageist in one post as well as sneery

MN bingo!

Well only 2 days into January and so far I'm enjoying it. All decs are down yesterday . Tree is still up til Sunday though.
It feels all crisp and clean here and lots of house sorting going on

LOVE January! Live in New Zealand and we are camping - its sunny, beautiful and feels like the best start to the New Year ❤️

TimeForATerf · 03/01/2026 04:21

I don’t mind the short days, cold, bare trees etc I actually think the landscape looks beautiful, asleep but ready to wake up new and fresh.

Sadly though, I don’t like January. I’ve spent too many nights at the hospital with different relatives and my dad died on the night of the 3rd January 21.

How strange, five years ago today.

Maybe in years to come, it will no longer hold that constant feeling of anxiety in the pit of my stomach.

I quite like January, as our salary increases come into effect and my bonus for the year just worked is paid out—so I usually go away while everyone else is getting back to work.

I think of - January - Song by Pilot.
I've always loved the tuneful melody.

I love January. It's a breather for a while.
Time to catch one's breath.

butterpuffed · 05/01/2026 09:14

I wouldn't say I love January , but don't dislike it either. It's more of a relief after the madness of Christmas !

However, I'm adding this post to say it is soo nice to see a positive thread in MN 😊👌

researchers3 · 05/01/2026 09:19

No, i find the cold and dark very hard and usually feel very poor! This year more than ever!

However, I'm loving the very blue skies, the time I've had off work (now ended) and the nights getting shorter again.

Definitely making the effort to look for more positives this year!

ayearoflivingamorously · 05/01/2026 10:12

Feeling a lot of love for January too this year. Bright lights of Christmas are lovely but then after all that ends, it is great to start seeing the days lengthen, every day is cold but you can feel the promise of spring getting closer and closer!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 07/01/2026 19:33

1 week in and I’m definitely feeling better than this time last year. I’m doing dry January which I think has helped my energy levels and I’ve been out for a walk every day, even when I’m at work which has really helped. The sun has also helped, although I can’t cope with this cold we have had.

Crushed23 · 07/01/2026 20:20

Just come back from our winter sun trip (Southern California) to surprisingly mild weather for where we live. Feels like I’m being eased back in!

Loving January so far. For me it’s actually socially very busy, as my friends and I feel like we get our city back after the Christmas tourists clear out.

Had lunch out today and got another tomorrow. Got friend’s birthday dinner, drinks and karaoke(!) on Friday night, another friend’s birthday brunch on Saturday and then it’s our anniversary on Sunday so DP are doing a fancy lunch followed by the theatre.

Next weekend we’re away again somewhere warm/relaxing, so that will be 3 days on a beach cocktail-in-hand.

That’s just the first half of January 😅 more madness to come… !

OttersMayHaveShifted · 07/01/2026 20:38

Nope. It's cold, dark and miserable. The beginning of the year ought to be in spring imo. At this time of year it feels like we should be hibernating!

BlackeyedSusan · 07/01/2026 21:16

Yes. It's getting lighter. The whole of spring ahead. Snow. Black ice was shit today though. There's warm weather ahead but not overly hot for a few months yet. I was relieved by autumn last year. Too hot inside too long.

I find the bit after the autumn leaves have gone and before the Christmas lights really start quite hard some years. Getting used to coming home in the dark is hard. By the time you get to January it's normal.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 07/01/2026 22:24

Now I’m sober I love it… so many people up for more non-booze related activities. And yes everything is shiny and new.

janj52301 · 25/01/2026 15:32

I love it as my birthday is in January

IndigoBluey · 25/01/2026 15:36

Yes! Last year was the first year I really loved January so I’ve taken forward some of the nice habits again. Planned downtime at weekends to relax when possible after a busy working week. Allowed myself a shopping afternoon for some bargains followed by cinema. Making the effort to do weights followed by relaxing swim and saunas. Lots of reading my book until cosy throws. Making time to watch movies with phone is another room. Lying in when I can to recharge. Clearing cupboards and planning outfit refreshes. Meal planning to get more fibre in

FromTheBlock · 25/01/2026 15:39

No.

I work outside and I’m sick of the constant rain, it hasn’t stopped pissing it down here for what feels like forever. Hard to be cheery in that scenario.

SofromJantoaprilwerejustindoorsyeah · 25/01/2026 15:42

If it’s a cold, but sunny January yes…cold, damp, constant rain no

Delatron · 25/01/2026 15:47

Yeah it’s alright the first week. Following the chaos of Christmas. And that first week was sunny and cold. We were all liking Jan!

Now after weeks and weeks of rain and it still being dark in the morning- not so much! It’s so grey and miserable. And we have another week to go. It feels like it has twice as many days as any other month..

No offence but if you live in the Southern hemisphere then I guess Jan is gonna be a bit different temperature wise….

Likewise if you’ve managed to escape on holiday to sunnier climes. I mean I liked Jan the year I spent it in Australia Not quite the same…

steff13 · 25/01/2026 15:50

I don't mind it. We are having our first snow of 2026 in Cincinnati. 10" so far.

Please ignore the leftover Halloween decoration. I keep forgetting to get the ladder to get him down. 🙄

Anyone else love january?

Delatron · 25/01/2026 15:59

Yes i imagine Jan in most other countries is much better than here. Would love snow.

When the kids leave home I am decamping somewhere else and I’m sure it will become my favourite month.

But Jan in the UK is pretty miserable.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 25/01/2026 17:56

It has rained a lot down here on the south coast but I’ve made a real effort to get out and walk regardless and I’ve been doing dry January so I feel really positive which is unusual for me, I normally hate January!

Loving the extra light in the evening, I can really notice the days getting longer. Can’t wait for a few more weeks time.
