I know it's unpopular but I LOVE the feeling of January. Everything just feels clean and big again. The year spreading ahead. Anyone else love it like me?

I love January and the short, dark day feeling. The world seems a little quieter, Christmas has left the house but now there's all the cosy and none of the activity. The countryside is lovely at this time of year. You can see the bare bones of the land and long, crisp days outside are followed by the warmth of the fire at home and the kitchen is full of wholesome soups and roasts. Candles, cosy jumpers, dark evenings reading a book and finishing up the Christmas drinks. Perfect.

With each year that passes, I am finding myself more patient and more able to appreciate things as they happen, instead of waiting for the next thing all the time.
I don't love January, but I am finding myself appreciating the dark stillness and cosiness of it more and more. It feels clean and tidy too, after all the clutter and extravagance and STUFF of Christmas. I find tidiness very relaxing.
I like the sales too! I'm hoping to get myself some bargains on new furniture for my bedroom.

The end of it is better, as I hear the fox mating cries so I know spring is coming and I can see my daffodils start to poke up.

Netcurtainnelly · 30/12/2025 14:48

No. Cold and still dark early.

Me! 🙋‍♀️ Mainly the fact that its as far away from Christmas as it can be but also you can notice the days getting gradually longer and spring and summer are on the way 😄☀️

Same here!

Cherrycola4 · 30/12/2025 14:57

I used to dread winter but since I bought a very warm (leopard faux fur) coat a couple of years ago I’ve started to love it.

FangFan · 30/12/2025 14:57

Yes, I love it too, a bit of a reset and a fresh start. Hoping for good things for the coming year.

DrCoconut · 30/12/2025 15:02

I loathe icy conditions and having to scrape the car every morning (which looking at the forecast will be the case once term starts again) but at least we are on our way to summer now. Kind of get the previous poster who mentioned increased awareness of the fact that people may leave us before next year at this time too, my new year resolution is actually to spend more time with my older relatives.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 30/12/2025 15:05

i have struggled the last few winters but I’m walking outside much more this year and hope to do more during January so I’m trying to embrace it! The daylight and connection with nature is definitely helping.

Cant wait to feel the days getting longer again and I love to see snowdrops.

See, I would like January if people treated it like what it is, which is a long, cold, dark month in the depths of winter, meant for candles, dark nights, twinkling lights and indulgent food.

What I hate is the ‘new year, new start, fresh slate, let’s all look forwards and be healthy and productive’ thing when people start reminding me that spring is around the corner and the days are getting longer etc. I love it when it’s dark by 5pm and hate it when the clocks go forward, so just let me bloody enjoy a dark, spooky, cosy, lazy winter, please. Christmas isn’t the end of that season! It’s a midwinter festival, not winter’s last hurrah before spring.

Edited

You do you. Luckily we all have different outlooks on things. People can treat it in anyway that pleases them as you do.

I love it.

Quiet. Dark. Restful. Everything sleeping in nature.

Its a time to really retreat and rest and enjoy serenity.

Purplewarrior · 30/12/2025 15:23

I like the fresh start and all the planning. Especially holiday planning.

I hate the cold, really struggle with it. It makes me really tired and miserable.

Hedjwitch · 30/12/2025 15:27

Mine and DS birthday in January. Love that the whole Christmas/ New Year stuff is behind us with spring to look forward to.

Cleo65 · 30/12/2025 15:31

My favourite month of the year, that feeling of hopefulness when you can honestly say 'nothing's gone wrong this year' - that never lasts obviously but it's amazing to feel it, albeit briefly.
I absolutely hate all the Christmas stuff, with a passion, that sucks up all of November & December so the relief when it's all over is wonderful.
I take January as a recharge & reset opportunity.

Moreteaandchocolate · 30/12/2025 15:34

Gentle January! Love it - so peaceful and I love the silver skies you get at this time of year.

countdowntonap · 30/12/2025 15:43

I find January very calming.

After learning about the Roman calendar, and the introduction of the months January and February (there were previously only 10 months) I like it even more; January is named after after Janus the ancient Roman god of beginnings, endings, doorways, transitions, and time, often depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions—past and future—perfectly symbolising the start of a new year

DrunkenKoala · 30/12/2025 15:44

Before children I hated Jan and Feb (wanted the party to continue) but now love them. November, December and early January (DD’s birthday) are enjoyable but pretty full on so I look forward to relaxing the rest of January. My Christmas scents usually last until mid Feb and my fire is on in the evenings and the house just feels cosy. I’ll probably spend a lot of time at the gym as haven’t been much in the last few weeks. We’ve got a couple of things organised for Feb half term, which is when I usually feel I’m getting my mojo back. (Luckily neither DP or I bother with Valentine’s Day so we don’t feel the pressure of that).

In early Jan the fallen leaves from the trees get cleared away and everywhere has a cleaner feel to it.

TonTonMacoute · 30/12/2025 15:47

Totally get you OP. I just hope we don't get too much bad winter weather, but to me it's just like turning to page 1 of a brand new diary

JoyintheMorning · 30/12/2025 15:52

January is my Birthday month.
It is easy to get excited about New Year, Fresh start stuff but it can seem like a long time through February.

LostittoBostik · 30/12/2025 15:53

Yes, I quite like January. I HATE February though. Weather is awful, everybody is skint and miserable, your NYRs have disappeared into the ether.

One year I went to the southern hemisphere for the whole month and it was a relief

babylamb4 · 30/12/2025 12:04

I do too. It feels like a clean slate. But as I’ve reached my forties and with every year that passes, January makes me a little wary of what’s to come and who’s going to still be here come this time next year.

You’re thinking in your 40’s about who’s still going to be here next year? I’m in my 60’s and I don’t think like that.

RandomUsernameHere · 30/12/2025 15:55

I don’t love it, but prefer it to December because it’s starting to get lighter and it’s a bit closer to Spring.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/12/2025 15:56

I prefer it to November. It’s great to be heading to Spring.

GooseyGandalf · 30/12/2025 16:40

Jan 2021 was devastating for me and I’ve found it a very hard time of year since. This year feels a tiny bit hopeful.

Inextremis · 30/12/2025 16:58

This will be the first January I've had without dogs in 45 years. I used to refer to Jan and Feb as the 'mud months' - for obvious reasons. I miss having a dog terribly, but at the same time, I find myself grateful for not having to go out in all weathers. It's a time for planning what vegetables to plant this year, shedding the December weight, drinking water instead of wine and deep cleaning the house. I'm feeling very positive about it - also I'm looking forward to reading the first chapter of my 2026 Almanac (A Seasonal Guide to 2026 by Lia Leendertz).

Things are a bit odd this year though - my crocus are already up, the daffs are sprouting, even a tulip or two. Let's hope the forecast frosts don't kill them all off!

Binus · 30/12/2025 16:59

I like it! The first week is still Christmas anyway, so tree and decorations are still up which I love. Then always make sure to have fun things to do. Lots of places have January discounts so it's a good time to get out and about if you don't mind the cold too much.
