I found a wallet

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:16

Tonight I found a wallet. Lots of cards, and some cash. I was delighted. But still proceeded to see a driving licence, clearly he has dropped the wallet outside his house. I knocked on the door, I ask if Raj lives there. She said yes, I said I found his wallet. She says she's on the phone to him, I see the name on the phone. She seems happy but no offer of a reward.

I go home, knowing I did the right thing. I have money in my bank account, I can pay tomorrow's bills.

Aibu for giving back the wallet?

People say I should have taken the cash.

Yes! I think his wife's reaction was underwhelming

Do you want a parade or something? for doing a very basic thing, that any other decent person who happened to be in the same place at the same time would have done? You deserve a "thank you" nothing more than if I'd held the door open for you. You walked a few steps and handed back someone's belonging that they had dropped.

Your "reward" is this: You did the right thing, instead of the wrong thing. You didn't bring pain and hurt and inconvenience and possibly financial hardship to another person. You didn't steal. You didn't profit from someone else's loss. You have no guilt to live with.
Every time we do something "good" we add to the good in the world. We make the world a better place, we tip the balance the right way. The world is a better place, the people are happier and therefore treat each other better and act better. Everyone benefits, everyone wins.

Now move on with your life, it really is a non-event and doesn't deserve much more thought. One day you'll leave your phone somewhere and someone will call you back to tell you you left it. Smile, and say thanks. That's it. That's simply how things should work and nothing more.

MamsKnit · 28/12/2025 13:25

I can’t help imagining that she was on the phone to her husband who rang her to say he lost his wallet (again) and she was enjoying telling him off and then you rock up with said wallet but she was already on one and couldn’t quite let it go so carried on laying into him. Hence the lack of gratitude to you.

Laura95167 · 28/12/2025 13:37

Thieves suggested you steal the cash.

Of course returning it complete was the appropriate thing

Laura95167 · 28/12/2025 13:39

Im sorry why would you expect a reward? You picked a wallet up, outside someones front door and returned it.

Thats the right thing to do. Of course you shouldn't have stolen any of it. And you should expect a reward for not being a thief

Lol she was far too jolly for that

Keep the cash & expect a reward?! How about just doing what you should, without stealing and expecting an award.

It's not stealing.

It's what people usually do when a wallet is found.

Because it's a gesture of goodwill, a thank you, a honesty tax

An honesty tax? You arent owed "tax" for not being a thieving scumbag. Youre supposed to not be a thief.

Sweetnessandbite · 28/12/2025 13:47

Another who voted YABU for even suggesting taking the cash or needing a reward. It wasn't clear.

Good morals and acts of kindness shouldn't be for a reward.

It's like people who buy a homeless person a sandwich or similar acts and post it on SM.

XenoBitch · 28/12/2025 14:07

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 28/12/2025 13:40

It's not stealing.

It is. Theft by finding.

What if there had been no cash in the wallet? A lot of people do not carry cash nowadays. Would you have been expecting him to march to a cash point and give you money? A bank transfer?

Pleasegodgotosleep · 28/12/2025 14:32

So you did the honest, morally correct thing that you SHOULD have done, but because you dont think the owner's wife was grateful enough or offered a reward you're bitter about it?

Are you always so transactional? Can you not just do the right thing because it is the right thing?

ShowMeTheSushi · 28/12/2025 14:55

You did the right thing. If it were your wallet, you’d want it back with cash included. Keeping it would be theft. As for her reaction, she was probably just surprised and wary.

People are dying in Gaza. Why are you comparing a wallet to humanity

You’re an idiot.

It's not stealing.

Of course it’s steal. Taking something that doesn’t belong to you is stealing and makes you a thief. It is a criminal offence called theft by finding for which you could be arrested and get a criminal record.

Theft by finding. Look it up.

OP makes a post, (for no other reason than "look how nice I am everyone", I don't understand why anyone would make a post about this!) Then people express their opinion, then OP gets shittier as the comments go on! Couldn't make it up!
Don't like peoples opinions? Then don't start a thread about being a potential thief! Simple really!

No hunny.

I've had a few posts who understand, the rest call me a thief.

Don't be daft to think 100% of people would return cash to an address. About 1% would where I live. You clearly don't live in deperavation

I don't see anything wrong with what she said. You haven't come across well on this thread.

It's still theft whether you are caught or not.

Joeninety · 28/12/2025 18:15

Might as well take the cash before Stammer and the gang do ?

It is still a crime. If you don't get caught, it would be on your conscience.
If that would not bother you then your morals are warped.

So your justification for potentially stealing is that you live in a deprived area? So if you did steal it would be from someone already deprived? That doesn't make you sound any better.

What justification? Do you not realize that most people don't get wallets back?
