I found a wallet

Tonight I found a wallet. Lots of cards, and some cash. I was delighted. But still proceeded to see a driving licence, clearly he has dropped the wallet outside his house. I knocked on the door, I ask if Raj lives there. She said yes, I said I found his wallet. She says she's on the phone to him, I see the name on the phone. She seems happy but no offer of a reward.

I go home, knowing I did the right thing. I have money in my bank account, I can pay tomorrow's bills.

Aibu for giving back the wallet?

People say I should have taken the cash.

If this isn't a goady post and you took the money, you're a disgusting person.

EasternEcho · 27/12/2025 12:03

Lost my wallet with money in it at a supermarket by leaving it in a cart. A shop assistant found it, looked my name up on Facebook and messaged me saying the wallet was found and could be picked up at the store. He wasn't there when I went to collect it with everything intact. I'm glad his returning my wallet was not contingent upon seeing how I reacted. This post is weird.

You are weird.

How dare you say I'm not allowed to have my emotions and that whatever you think is better

Do you feel better?

My grandmother lost her purse once on a bus where she lived (Fife in Scotland) and the bus company confirmed they had the wallet, but would take 10% of the money contents as a tip for the driver because otherwise the drivers wouldn’t hand the wallet in apparently. This was years ago but I’d be interested to hear whether this policy is still in place in Fife or elsewhere as I’m sure it’s illegal now (and was probably illegal then). Jaw-dropping appalling to steal from a pensioner like that.

They can charge an admin fee, not a tip for the driver. That has never been policy.

ThatNiftyBlueSwan · 27/12/2025 15:59

This happened to me once - I lost a purse with a lot of money in it . I was desperate- it was all I had .
Someone found it and took a lot of trouble to return it . I am forever grateful to that person and try and pay it forward whenever I can . I am glad you took it back .

Rosealea · 27/12/2025 16:01

Don't be ridiculous of course you give it back or hand it into the police station. Why would you steal?!!! 😡

Is the admin fee a flat rate?

You are allowed to have your emotions but don't expect others to condone your "greed" or your expectations, or the opinions of your "people who say I should have taken the cash".

And why were you "delighted" to have found it?

DahlsChickenz · 27/12/2025 16:46

What scumbags are suggesting you should have taken the cash?!

NemesisInferior · 27/12/2025 17:03

So you found a wallet outside a house, and knocked on the door to return it?

I mean, not really a hardship, was it? I wouldn't be giving you a reward for that either.

And anyone who entertains the idea of keeping the cash is, obviously, a total wanker.

How would it be returned to the owner?

Well, the wallet I found didn’t contain any ID or I’d have delivered it back to the owner. However, it did contain CCJ’s with a name on in addition to the money. I thought the money might be to pay a fine or something. I didn’t really know what CCJ’s were, apart from they were something to do with court. So I figured the police were the best chance of returning the wallet.

I had found the wallet in a car park. There were a bunch of shops about like a Home Bargains; a Lidl and a few other places. I didn’t want to chance leaving the wallet in a store, so I just let the customer assistants in each store know I’d drop the wallet to the police station, about a mile away.

I know what it’s like to lose a wallet. I went shopping on my 18th birthday with all my birthday money in my purse, over £100 in 1998. I accidentally left my purse by the catalogue stands in Argos and someone took it, and didn’t hand it in. I realised after just a minute and it was already gone. I was devastated. They probably even saw me panicking and looking for it. There’s no way I could do that to someone else. You did the right thing op.

Boomer55 · 27/12/2025 17:26

You found a wallet outside his house, and kindly and honestly knocked to give it back.

It was the right thing to do, caused you no inconvenience, so I’m not sure why you think a reward was needed.

Theslummymummy · 27/12/2025 17:34

It's what people usually do when a wallet is found.

Because it's a gesture of goodwill, a thank you, a honesty tax

I don't think it is really - my husband found a wallet on a London bus at the end of the day - he brought it home and I found the owner on facebook and messaged her - she picked it up from his work the following day - no reward was expected or given. Reward enough that he'd done the right thing and she got it back in tact. Peoples perceptions are different I guess.

PauliesWalnuts · 28/12/2025 11:04

Honesty tax? 😂 I’ve heard it all now.

Honesty tax 😂😂😂

You should be grateful for the nice fuzzy feeling of having done The Right Thing.

Onwards and upwards.

Itiswhysofew · 28/12/2025 11:19

Keep the cash & expect a reward?! How about just doing what you should, without stealing and expecting an award.

Theslummymummy · 28/12/2025 12:21

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:46

How would it be returned to the owner?

Because people contact the police to see if belongings have been handed in.
