Scratchcard Win

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:19

So yesterday we had our annual pre-Xmas family meal (my brother, sister partners and kids).

every year we have done this I’ve bought everyone a scratchcard as a bit of fun.

BIL won £50k on his card yesterday and is not going to share it!

I think he should!!!!

YABVU and entitled. The card (and winnings) was not yours the second you gifted it to someone else.
Well done to him though. I hope he enjoys spending it.

Yes.

If I give someone a bath bomb that I didn’t care for the scent of but then it smells better than I expected, I don’t expect to the be able to crawl in the bath with them.

Kagoule · 21/12/2025 18:14

At the very least i would expect a bloody fabulous Christmas present from my sister!

how has she reacted?

Superhansrantowindsor · 21/12/2025 18:16

If it was me I’d give you half.

If you bought everyone socks would they be expected to share?

Absolutely ridiculous over £50.
Don't give scratch cards if you don't want ppl to actually win!!

That would be bloody weird 😆

Too late for retrospect

You cant give a gift and expect him to share it
Thats really mean of you to make people scratch for a win and excitement only to snatch the win from under their nose

You should have just scratched them all yourself in a corner

You could always scratch them yourself in private beforehand - save them all of that work - and then only give the ones that aren't winners!

usedtobeaylis · 21/12/2025 18:25

I agree with you OP. If it's supposed to be a bit of fun for everyone and it's a family thing I would share it. I don't know how much it who with exactly but I wouldn't just sit on £50k under those circumstances.

It does seem like a rubbish scenario, doesn't it?

"Here, have a scratchcard as your present - unlike an actual present that's guaranteed to be of a certain value, it will most probably end up being worthless; but in the unlikely event that it turns out not to be worthless, you have to share it with everybody else".

Londonrach1 · 21/12/2025 18:28

Seriously! No he shouldn't. Yabu

LadyKedleston · 21/12/2025 18:09

Yeah, you definitely come across as a nice person 😆

Right!!! Bitter much, I wouldn’t share with her either

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 21/12/2025 18:31

The thing is that, even if he does share it... one person has said £1K, somebody else has said £5K, others are suggesting a proportion. A lot of people would actually take offence at 'only' being given £1K when you've won £50K - "especially as I bought it, and if I hadn't given it to you, you wouldn't have won anything".

Also, do you just share it with/give a proportion to the giver, or everybody present? And how is it fair if you scratch it then and there, win £50K, and are expected to share it around - when somebody else could have waited to scratch theirs (or sneaked out to the toilet to do so), won £1million and then they get a share of your £50K as well as their own million which they get to keep in full?!

MissLead · 21/12/2025 18:33

Well you lot are nice (not).

You're the one thinking other people should share their presents with you 😂

MinecraftMum40 · 21/12/2025 18:39

I genuinely would have been happy for him in your shoes and would absolutely not expect a share. You bought them as fun gifts.

BipolarBabe34 · 21/12/2025 18:39

Why should he share? He won it. It’s his to do as he pleases.

Scout2016 · 21/12/2025 18:45

How many of you were there? How many adults and kids?

Scout2016 · 21/12/2025 18:47

I would want to be all pleased for them and magnanimous. But I'd be kicking myself I didn't get that winning one. Especially when I had it and gave it away!

RiderGirl · 21/12/2025 18:47

This thread is the reason that if I ever won anything on the lotto/a scratch card I would keep my mouth SHUT!! I'd pretend I didn't win and quietly stash the card away. I'd get everyone a nice gift or a holiday or whatever. £50k to me would be absolutely life changing, once in a lifetime. Equally if one of my siblings won a significant amount I think I'd rather not know about it, it brings out the worst in people (including me!)

prawncocktailcrispss · 21/12/2025 18:48

I wouldn't share either - it's life changing - but I would have given the buyer maybe 1k.

Reallyohreally · 21/12/2025 18:48

I never buy them for anyone but family at xmas and before we scratch we agree everything over a 1000 be shared equally by number of families ( so singletons don’t just get half what a couple would) I buy them so it’s my rules 😅 very organized I am but we’ve never won much more than a tenner.

madamegazelle1 · 21/12/2025 18:48

We do this at family get togethers and wins are shared!
