Scratchcard Win

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:19

So yesterday we had our annual pre-Xmas family meal (my brother, sister partners and kids).

every year we have done this I’ve bought everyone a scratchcard as a bit of fun.

BIL won £50k on his card yesterday and is not going to share it!

I think he should!!!!

This is exactly why I have never given scratch cards as gifts. I know it sounds awful but I would be gutted if someone won a significant amount with a card I bought them.

Why? Does nobody have any grace left? I'd be delighted if a card I bought won someone something!

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:27

Absolutely

Course you would 🤥😏

CombatBarbie · 21/12/2025 17:33

Either agree beforehand or put your name on the back of the card. In our family I just cant see anyone, in law or not, not sharing it between the family. Saying that, one of us always always says over £1k its shared.....

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/12/2025 17:37

I’m not sure I’d share as that’s a life changing amount of money and you listed off a lot of people round that table. If it was your BIL then what does your sister think

User79853257976 · 21/12/2025 17:41

He should have said he lost and slipped it in his pocket 😆

blueshoes · 21/12/2025 17:43

Are scratchcards a thing? Sounds like a scam. I hope you/someone sees the 50K. Don't pay any money or give personal info upfront to get it.

I am assuming the OP means the lottery scratchcards, you couldn't get more above board 🤷‍♀️

What an odd response. Of course scratchcards are a real thing. You can buy them in any supermarket / convenience shop

This is what i would have done.

MrsMitford3 · 21/12/2025 17:47

If you bought everyone socks would they be expected to share?

Absolutely ridiculous over £50.
Don't give scratch cards if you don't want ppl to actually win!!

ElizaCBennett · 21/12/2025 17:48

Wow! So rude of him; so true what they say - no good deed goes unpunished! My opinion is best case he keeps half and shares the other half. I sincerely hope you don’t do this again - you are a good person, he is not! Merry Christmas 🎄

Figcherry · 21/12/2025 17:48

That’s why I wouldn’t give scratch cards as gifts. I’d feel awful if one dc won and the other didn’t.

UNDERCOVERELEPHANTINTHEROOM · 21/12/2025 17:53

Just out of interest, if you gifted the same people anything else that made them a profit, would you expect them to share that too?
Imagine you gifted them all a small ornament from a charity shop, and one of the ornaments turned out to be highly valuable, would you expect them to sell it and share the proceeds?

How do you know he isn't going to share any of it? Did you ask?
He may well throw some your way once the money lands in bank. If you were cheeky enough to ask or tell him you think he should be sharing, that may have been enough to change his mind!

He openly stated it - why would I post otherwise?

Next year buy enough for your family and open them all before you meet up, then if you win you can keep it all.

Poodlelove · 21/12/2025 17:56

It his his but I think he should buy a small gift to the value or say £250

Nevernonono · 21/12/2025 18:02

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:27

Absolutely

Easy said now…

cakedup · 21/12/2025 18:05

I buy and put scratch cards in the Xmas crackers, I wouldn't expect the winner to share. Once the scratchcard goes in the cracker, its not mine anymore. The crackers are only shared with ds, dp and his dd and her dp so id be glad if any of them won it. If I won £50k I'd probably treat us all to a holiday together.

If you are going to do scratch cards, really it needs to be agreed in advance how it would work if someone won big

As you didn't do this, its up to him if he shares or not

I’m sorry for the OP but others take note. You have to consider that you might win.

We have bought frequent family Euro million tickets. DF is sadly no longer with us but we always had friendly arguments about how we would split the money - when we were talking about 50 plus millions. There would have been plenty for everyone. With all our plans, we have never won.

PInkyStarfish · 21/12/2025 18:08

It’s his to do as he likes with it.

Yeah, you definitely come across as a nice person 😆

Karmacamelia · 21/12/2025 18:10

I suppose, if he keeps it, he could be generous, he could give you all a token £1,000/£2,000 each to share his good fortune, a goodwill gesture (take the sting out of it?)
My DH said he'd definitely keep it, if it was me, I would have a massive guilt complex and end up sharing it, then secretly be really resentful 😂

Of course it's debatable, most things are. 🤷‍♀️

Others have already asked, but you haven't responded. How much do you expect your BIL to give you?
