Im mid thirties and more or less single after a LTR through my twenties. Im childfree and happy to stay childfree.

Im happy and content in my singleness - truly- I have a nice life, good friends, amazing siblings, brilliant nieces, à career that has its ups and downs but that is rewarding. I am economically stable.

So here is the question - without justification - one evening many yonks ago - my elder sister made me promise to never date people from a certain profession. She didn't want to elaborate but just said "Don't".
My best friend of many years (Male) recently said as long as you don't choose à "same profession" you'll be happy. He didn't want to elaborate either.

Sister is an academic, best friend is a surgeon, I'm a lawyer.

AIBU to ask you to guess thé profession?

I ask because I am being quite nicely flirted with be a man who is "profession" ... He's a relative stranger - we met in real life but no mutual acquaintances.

The amount of travel needed and danger element of certain jobs

Ah! I'm a journalist and I am married to one, I didn't realise we were to be avoided! Probably why so many journalists end up with other journalists.

BeNoisyFish · 11/12/2025 19:19

You should watch the film (The Roses) 2025, the husband is an architect and his job is part of the plot. How true the representation in the film is to actual architect husband, I do not know... all the clichés I heard were about dr's and policemen...

BluePeterAdventWreath · 11/12/2025 19:21

100% police

What's wrong with journalists?

The inability to proof read their articles.

BeNoisyFish · 11/12/2025 19:26

BluePeterAdventWreath · 11/12/2025 19:21

100% police

Right?? She came back and said 'architect'.can you believe it? 😂😂😂

Prelim · 11/12/2025 19:35

Maybe it’s because we’re not paid that well for all the hours we put in!!

CautiousLurker2 · 11/12/2025 19:40

Politician?

godmum56 · 11/12/2025 19:40

why would you not insist on knowing why?

CautiousLurker2 · 11/12/2025 19:42

mauditsoitils · 11/12/2025 18:47

Ok! It’s architect… I now need theories why.

Edited

I missed this.

No idea why other than they really are not paid very well despite the years of training and the hours they need to work. Both my kids explored it and went off it pretty quickly.

Eyeshadow · 11/12/2025 19:43

That was the last profession I thought you’d say!!

I was talking to my DD just last week about whether she’d be interested in doing it (she’s stuck with what to do but loves history).

I know 1 woman and she does have a lot of issues - went to private school and could never live up to parents expectations etc - but I wouldn’t judge her for her career choice but maybe it ties in with it.

What are the reasons?

I was told to avoid police and surgeons but tbh I wouldn’t completely avoid them as I have my own life and independence so it wouldn’t bother me if they worked all the time etc.

That's a sub editor's job.

I had a long term relationship with an architect. He was an utter arsehole, I always just put that down to his personality rather than his profession...

TowerRavenSeven · 11/12/2025 19:54

Artist?

I heard pilots and surgeons have the greatest percentage of narcissists. I suppose if you think about it , those two professions involve keeping people alive and safe and require a cool head, so it's not surprising if that spills over into their private lives and they are cold and egotistical.

Delphiniumandlupins · 11/12/2025 20:16

I thought dentist, simply because I think looking at teeth all day wouldn't be much fun.

Known a couple of architects, friends of friends. Don't remember any particularly unattractive traits. Grand Designs etc suggest an inability to stick to a budget?

WobblyJogger · 11/12/2025 20:28

Architects?
You need to avoid their dodgy erections.

(sorry, I'll get my coat)

LMichelleFxx · 11/12/2025 20:58

No! That has shocked me!

My husband is an architect and I personally find him very dateable 😂

Only downside to the career is the amount of social award do’s they go on!

Tosserneighbour · 11/12/2025 21:01

Oh, I know quite a few architects — two friends (who used to be married to one another) and another friend’s husband, and various people I’ve met through them. I don’t honestly think they have a whole lot in common. Maybe a rooted prejudice against tv architects?

VoltaireMittyDream · 11/12/2025 22:11

Pavementworrier · 11/12/2025 22:28

Not a profession, though

mustytrusty · 11/12/2025 22:29

Police officer, armed forces or butcher are the professions of be wary of. I’m going for copper.
