Avoidable professional

Im mid thirties and more or less single after a LTR through my twenties. Im childfree and happy to stay childfree.

Im happy and content in my singleness - truly- I have a nice life, good friends, amazing siblings, brilliant nieces, à career that has its ups and downs but that is rewarding. I am economically stable.

So here is the question - without justification - one evening many yonks ago - my elder sister made me promise to never date people from a certain profession. She didn't want to elaborate but just said "Don't".
My best friend of many years (Male) recently said as long as you don't choose à "same profession" you'll be happy. He didn't want to elaborate either.

Sister is an academic, best friend is a surgeon, I'm a lawyer.

AIBU to ask you to guess thé profession?

I ask because I am being quite nicely flirted with be a man who is "profession" ... He's a relative stranger - we met in real life but no mutual acquaintances.

I’m going to guess someone who works night shifts but really hard to pin down exactly what profession it could be as there could be hundreds of guesses.

Only because you likely work daytime hours and night shift worker hours wouldn’t really align without adjustments to your daytime hours so maybe kind of hard to match it up from a dating perspective however I know people who have and are perfectly content and make it work. But just a guess.

(Edited as I wrote a confusing update initially).

Ok! It’s architect… I now need theories why.

Don’t worry. If you weren’t married I would date you ;-)! Doctors are not vetoed by my sister and best friend.

😂 I will bear you in mind should I ever get divorced.

That’s strange. The ones I know tend to only wear neutrals, but I can’t think of much else to say!

Just tell us the profession already then maybe people can give you their experiences with people of said profession

I knew an architect who was married to a GP and the nightmare in the relationship was the GP. Serial adulterer who ran off with a firefighter and left him with the kids.
Can't think why an architect would be unsuitable.

AppropriateAdult · 11/12/2025 18:51

Sinister husbands in TV dramas are often architects, I feel. Not sure that’s scientifically verifiable, though…

museumum · 11/12/2025 18:52

I work with lots of architects. I’d say that common faults would be that they tend towards obsessive about work / workaholic and very exacting/pernickety.
Also you certainly don’t want one who will do a “Grand Designs” home build on you!

itgetsthehoseagain · 11/12/2025 18:53

I want to say "Doctor", even though the surgeon added their opinion. I don't know how they could leave the job at the door unless they were a raving psychopath.

RecordBreakers · 11/12/2025 18:53

Absolutely no idea what your sister and friend could have against architects as a whole profession.

Some of the professions mentioned before you said this, I can understand.

TableLegs001 · 11/12/2025 18:54

Nope can’t figure out why! I know they are just movies but two come to mind where the men are architects and they seem smart and sexy so I wouldn’t be too bothered (Indecent Proposal and Love Actually).

TheWorldIsCrushingMe · 11/12/2025 18:55

I live rurally and I've been told by two separate friends to avoid dating farmers.

CarrotVan · 11/12/2025 18:56

My former BIL is an award winning architect. He is a pretentious twat

But his business partner is a decent chap so it can’t be all architects

It can be quite a difficult profession to make a decent living

CarrotVan · 11/12/2025 18:57

And always wore neutrals! That may be an architect thing. Also statement glasses

mauditsoitils · 11/12/2025 18:57

It is pretty random right? I have a feeling that « Hottie flirting architect » - who works in adjacent offices in same building is gearing up to ask me out for a drink.

I need a comeback for when my sister disapproves - she’s not only my sister but also my best friend. And I tend to trust her jugement as the rares times I have not I have regretted it!

I remember reading an interview with the Pet Shop Boys when i was younger and one of them had trained to be an architect. He was told not to go into the profession as if you screwed something major up you could be sued and would be financially ruined. So maybe it's that?

mauditsoitils · 11/12/2025 19:00

I’m headed out for drinks (with non architects) but will reply later!

My exact thought, what a cheek for a surgeon to say that!
I thought the answer would be a dr (incl surgeons and dentists) or a copper/military/firefighter. And when she said no I thought estate agent.😂

senua · 11/12/2025 19:14

Don't architects fit in with the god complex thing? They know the right design solution and woe betide the client who doesn't go along with it ... despite it being nothing like the brief, totally impractical and about four times over budget.
