Im mid thirties and more or less single after a LTR through my twenties. Im childfree and happy to stay childfree.

Im happy and content in my singleness - truly- I have a nice life, good friends, amazing siblings, brilliant nieces, à career that has its ups and downs but that is rewarding. I am economically stable.

So here is the question - without justification - one evening many yonks ago - my elder sister made me promise to never date people from a certain profession. She didn't want to elaborate but just said "Don't".
My best friend of many years (Male) recently said as long as you don't choose à "same profession" you'll be happy. He didn't want to elaborate either.

Sister is an academic, best friend is a surgeon, I'm a lawyer.

AIBU to ask you to guess thé profession?

I ask because I am being quite nicely flirted with be a man who is "profession" ... He's a relative stranger - we met in real life but no mutual acquaintances.

Im reading - no one has got it yet.

As regards with how strictly - its à règlemented profession.

As for surgeons - I know a few utter arses - but also (best friend included) some of them are the loveliest people I know.
I interact with law enforcement (or I used to - rare now) and I have met some I wouldn’t date and some I would.

This is making me laugh and relieved I am married. As a full-time nhs consultant, I have just realised I am undateable ;-)

Don’t worry. If you weren’t married I would date you ;-)! Doctors are not vetoed by my sister and best friend.

Social worker or teacher.

Why social worker? Because of the hours? The implication and involvement needed? Thé stress?

What does 'règlemented' mean?

I don’t need external input to know to avoid finance bros - I just couldn’t! I hear the word blockchain and my knickers weld to my body and even copious amounts or alcohol won’t detach them.

I'm a social worker, previously child protection but now adults with disabilities. I wasn't a good partner when I was in child protection, I was too emotionally drained to give anything to my relationship.

travellinglighter · 11/12/2025 18:40

Fireman?

To be fair any occupation that is male orientated can be challenging
(says the man in a male orientated profession who was married to a doctor and who's partner used to be married to a barrister).

What's wrong with journalists?

SchrodingersKoala · 11/12/2025 18:44

I'd be thinking police followed by surgeon. Police are notorious for playing away and are massively misogynistic. I've heard these things directly from the mouths of police officers too. Surgeons are known to be a specific breed too, very arrogant, their job comes before anything else (which as a patient under their care you'd be glad of, as a wife doing everything on your own with 0 support not so much).
