Tree fairy

Every year I float the idea of a Christmas fairy to top the tree. DH and DCs all claim that a star is the ornament that should be used. We have both. AIBU to think that a fairy is THE CORRECT tree topper?

Lowly Worm has topped my tree for the last 30 years.

Star because the fairy in the song is so whiny and needy, who needs that judgment in their own living room? Some kind of beatific and silent angel is ok too.

RandomFireworks · 11/12/2025 08:59

We have a hybrid Celtic, Pagan, Saturnalia, fairy, angel,Mother Earth on top of ours. She has wings and wears a red and tartan dress with a laurel crown and carries a bouquet of foliage. Our tree is decorated with woodland and artic animals and birds with cinnamon sticks , pine cones ect so I see her as more Mother Earth than angel or fairy .

We have something different every year depending on who has had what new.
Last year was a DiddlMaus (admittedly not new)
We've had ymYou Tooz figures. Lego things. Any thing smallish really.
Mainly because I've never found an actual topper that I like!

Pantsinthewash · 11/12/2025 09:01

I'm Team Sindy!

MsGinaLinetti · 11/12/2025 09:01

I'm now loving all these traditions and preferences. Thank you

Star. I am waiting for the shop to open right now so I can buy one, we can't find the one we have used for the last 20+ years. We have a fairy that one of the dc made on it right now and it looks weird.

Brefugee · 11/12/2025 09:01

meh. I have a rubber duck

IsSheorIsntShe · 11/12/2025 09:05

One year we had Death, complete with scythe, from the Discworld series. Thanks, DS.

None of those. I have something similar to this as it reminds me of the toppers we used back home (not UK). (Photo may be pending)

This year we’ve chosen Santa on top. It’s a hollow felt one we had since my kids were little.

I like this

Radiator981 · 11/12/2025 09:18

We have an angel and a star - we alternate each year

Star is correct. Like the Star of Bethehem over the stable where Jesus was born.
Or an angel. Fairies have nothing to do with Christmas- they are probably a misreading of angels.

Just came here to say the same!

DappledThings · 11/12/2025 09:22

We have an angel. A star would be fine. Not a fairy.

BauhausOfEliott · 11/12/2025 09:24

Ours is a fairy and I love her. She’s been around since my mum and dad had their first Christmas tree. She’s very mid-century kitsch and my favourite thing about the tree.

RoamingToaster · 11/12/2025 09:25

I recently bought my first tree topper and went for a little cute red and green fairy but I'm starting to wish I'd gone for a star. The fairy draws your eyes attention too much and a star I think goes more cohesively together. Either is fine but think of how it will look altogether.

Blarn · 11/12/2025 09:36

We have a star but would like the fairy my parents have.

We always had a fairy, even though it's obviously and angel as its Christmas. I wonder if referring to them as fairies is a regional thing or a 'of a certain time' thing?

datgyalb · 11/12/2025 09:37

I’ve got the M&S bear clinging on the top 🤣

Anxietybummer · 11/12/2025 09:38

Fairy (Angel) is correct. It’s the Angel that told Mary she was going to have a baby 🤣

mondaytosunday · 11/12/2025 09:52

We’ve had both at various times but the last few have been angels (not fairy - it’s presumably Angel Gabriel who is as important as the star in the story).

My old Sindy in her wedding dress doubled as the Christmas tree fairy for many years.

OMG we used to do that
We now have a winnie the pooh dressed as an angel that MIL bought DD around 15 years ago. its not tasteful but our whole tree is quite un SM worthy anyway as its full of things the DC made (now 20 and 16) and things we bought on our travels such as a Mexican santa

Oldandgreyer · 11/12/2025 10:10

Ours was a peg doll angel that I made when I was about 7 .. from a Christmas gift of a peg doll kit.
Mind you we also had a bit of wood that had plaster of paris put on it, with holly and a fake robin.
And dozens of those baubels we made from cutting circles out of Christmas cards.

HeyThereDelila · 11/12/2025 10:10

It’s not a fairy, it’s an angel!

We have one similar to this. I used to have my Dmil Topper so really old. I had it for about 20 years and was devastated when it broke.
The one we have now is nice but not got the same feeling.
I really don't like angels of any kind, they're creepy.

MsGinaLinetti · 11/12/2025 10:17

Shocked at the ratio though.
