Discussion with friends. Very heated disagreement. Unreasonable wearing knickers . Reasonable not wearing knickers

I am wondering how many times all these knickers people get thrush. I am late 30s. Literally never had it. Air everyday 😂

Reading the pro knicker posts, it seems that actually we do not get thrush or UTI s at all. I think this is why the knicker wearers are mystified by the ‘ must have airflow’ comments. I’m 47, always knickers and pjs. Never had any problems.
I also horse ride most days and sometimes wear knickers, tights and jodhpurs so definitely not much airflow!

Laiste · 23/11/2025 08:28

No knickers.

No anything in fact. Naked. Every night.

Can't stand wearing anything in bed!

AMBOG · 23/11/2025 08:31

Thank you for all your responses. Some are hilarious. It seems that team no knickers wins. I’m amazed and shocked that so many people aren’t decently covered at night.

Just a thought. If you then have sex do you bother putting on the pjs/ knickers again afterwards?

I would unless you want a wet patch on the sheets

Where do you get silk French knickers from?

I got mine from Jasmine Silk. Quite pricey but currently on sale. I also have a pair of their normal knickers, which are very thin and delicate but the most comfy knickers I've ever had. Their size chart was accurate for me.

I also bought a few pairs of silk pj shorts on Vinted and use those as French Knickers too. Although I'm pretty sure one pair is fake, and actually polyester.

Yes, it's a bit mysterious. Mind you, my bedtime knickers these days are boxer-brief style, same as most of my daytime knickers, so certainly not overly restrictive.

To be fair , I did get thrush a few times. Always after a round of antibiotics. It clears away on its own in 2/3 days. Luckily I rarely need antibiotics.Never had an UTI.

It’s not just about air it just feels nicer just as it does to be braless. To spend all day and night in pants is not a nice thought plus the extra washing if it’s a fresh pair. I don’t own enough for a start.

Bunionbabe · 23/11/2025 08:46

Scientists say we all wash ourselves and our clothes too much, bad for the fabrics and the planet it seems. A bit of grubby is good, builds up the immune system.

Isobel201 · 23/11/2025 09:03

I only wear knickers at night if I'm on my period, but I do wear pyjama bottoms during the day sometimes (wfh) so I will also wear knickers then.

Thatsalineallright · 23/11/2025 09:05

No knickers at night helps to reduce thrush.

I have a duvet and as far as I know, it’s only me and DH in the bed!

Periperi2025 · 23/11/2025 09:33

Naked, but with fluffy socks if required.
Knickers only on period.
I'm perimenopausel so need to be able to throw everything off to cool down, i have a fan running at all times to aid this process!

Same here.

In the evenings and mornings (or if I have them on in the day) when I have my PJs on, I will have knickers on then most of the time.

Buy when I go to bed they both come off.

Cucy · 23/11/2025 09:47

It’s interesting people should say about thrush as I’ve only had it once in my lifetime - non knicker wearer.

But my friend gets it regularly - knicker wearer.

Correlation doesn’t equal causation but it is interesting.

Tammygirl12 · 23/11/2025 09:57

PJs and no knickers here

wendywoopywoo222 · 23/11/2025 09:57

I sleep naked unless I’m really cold and I will wear a sleeveless T-shirt to keep my back warm. I feel really restricted trying to sleep in any clothes.

Muffinmam · 23/11/2025 10:29

ohwoaw · 22/11/2025 22:41

Many mumnsnetters will only was their arse cracks/flaps with water in the belief you can’t touch anything with soap down there or it’s instant thrush. Surely that’s like washing your pits with water only? You’d smell!

I used to get thrush and UTI’s when I wasn’t washing properly. Now I use soap, body wash and femfresh.

It is so necessary.

Many mumsnetters also don’t shower every day and think they don’t smell.

I can smell when someone hasn’t bathed or hasn’t washed their clothes. I can also smell when they’ve been lying around on dirty sheets.

In my country it’s normal to shower twice a day. Morning to wake up and then evening to wind down before bed.

Yes, quick sort out then pjs and socks straight back on

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/11/2025 10:46

Vest and pants in winter and nothing in summer. I own zero night clothes. I am very not a "snuggle in your PJs" type of person.

Makingpeace · 23/11/2025 11:21

GagMeWithASpoon · 22/11/2025 23:45

Particularly at night… right?

Of course, bacteria only proliferate at night. What time does night start for your bacteria?

PJs and no knickers here

How often do you change your PJs?

DustyOldLady · 23/11/2025 11:38

Naked in bed, all year round. Can’t put heating on at night as it’s too hot. Shower before bed, and in I pop, nice and cool and seamless all night.

WhatterySquash · 23/11/2025 11:39

Ahfiddlesticks · 23/11/2025 06:14

It's not nonsense. Just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't make it nonsense. And if someone gets thrush regularly then this is a small change they can make which might improve the situation for them.

I agree if you get thrush a lot then it's reasonable to try making changes and "airing" at night might conceivably help. I'd suggest there may also be a link with the fabric of your knickers and PJs - if they are all synthetic then changing that could help too.

But as there are loads of us on team knickers who don't get thrush, it's probably more complex than "everyone should air their bits to not get thrush".

I'm not just team knickers I'm team big brushed cotton pjs, big feather duvet, blanket on top and hot water bottle. I prefer the bed to be warm but the room cooler. No thrush. Both experiences are real and part of the "evidence". It's probably that some people are prone to thrush and there are probably loads of factors - genetics, diet, washing habits and products, sexual activity are probvably all bigger factors than "airing".
