To flash at middle lane huggers?

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 02/11/2025 16:33

it really angers me how many people don’t know how to drive on the motorway. Especially the M25.

Why are there so many people who just sit in the middle lane and don’t move over? I don’t want to undertake people. So if I’m being made to slow down by a middle lane hogger I’ll flash at them to move over. More often than not they will move to the outside lane, so they obviously know where they should be?!

I do want to add that I also hate people who weave and undertake but I think they are just aggressive drivers and also if no one hogged the middle lane they wouldn’t be able to!

I agree I absolutely hate it too. I think people genuinely don’t know the other lanes are for overtaking. The vast majority of people sit in their chosen lane for their whole journey. I don’t think they learnt the proper rules of driving, even at the beginning of their driving lives

SodOffbacktoaibu · 02/11/2025 16:36

As annoying as it is, you can't just go around flashing at the idiots. Two wrongs don't make a right and all that.

I do hope you're not driving up close to them flashing either, as that is dangerous driving.

You should just drive safely and not try and police other drivers.

DappledThings · 02/11/2025 16:36

I do it too if they have just forced me to go over two lanes to get past them and two lanes back. If I have time to do that you are in the wrong lane and no bollocks about "there is a constant stream of lorries in the first lane" cuts it.

I do the double lane overtake and flash regularly on the M25. It really isn't the case that lane 1 is always full.

BashfulClam · 02/11/2025 16:49

Stop flashing at people, whilst it is annoying your are distracting people.

Redpeach · 02/11/2025 16:51

Stop getting so angry, its an imperfect system, are you in a rush?

verycloakanddaggers · 02/11/2025 16:52

Two wrongs don't make right. It's dangerous to flash your lights, so stop doing that.

Not a rush no, just hate that it causes people to have to do dangerous things

MyballsareSandy2015 · 02/11/2025 16:56

Just overtake them! Why flash in the middle lane when you have another lane to get past them!

Don't be ridiculous. That would be intimidating behaviour and if the police saw you they would pull you over for that. You can use the other lane to overtake, that's what it's there for. You are no different than the 'middle lane hoggers' - you also want use of the middle lane without moving over. Just overtake.

CalishataFolkart · 02/11/2025 16:56

Flashing your lights is to inform other drivers of a hazard. There is a hazard in the middle lane. Them. Don’t sit in the middle lane unnecessarily and you won’t get flashed.

(I don’t flash middle laners, or tailgate, or beep, or swerve round them in an exaggerated manner, but they do annoy me)

PoliteBee · 02/11/2025 16:58

It really depends on speed. If it's 77mph then that's fine with me.

Changeforarest · 02/11/2025 16:59

Don't drive angry. It affects your concentration and response time. There are a lot of idiots on the road, ignore them and concentrate on driving safely yourself.
There are too many people on the road who think they are great drivers, and that they have the right to censure others.

Isobel201 · 02/11/2025 17:01

I did it twice last week flashed at two middle lane hoggers going down the M1. Went on the M62 today across to Manchester and the left lane was empty and followed a line of cars all sitting in the middle lane overtaking nobody. I used that left lane for a good ten minutes before coming across a lorry to overtake. Its illegal to use the middle lane but there is not enough police and traffick officers patrolling the roads.

CaroleKing · 02/11/2025 17:02

Dear dear such temper OP. Calm down, pull out into the OVERTAKING lane and overtake. I'm sure your high horse gallops fast enough.

I didn’t say it was causing me to do dangerous things, it causes others to undertake which is dangerous. Did you not read all of my post? not sure why I should slow down if they have a perfectly good lane they should be using? You shouldn’t be causing people to slow down unnecessarily.

They are breaking the Highway Code, and it is a fine-able offence?

Ok so to clarify, I mean that I will flash if someone is currently overtaking me and so I’d have to slow down if they don’t move in or undertake (which I would never do). I don’t mean every single middle lane hogger ( though I wish they would all learn how a motorway works).

I'm sure they know the rules. They just think they don't apply to them. It's easier for unconfident or lazy drivers to stick to one lane.

My commute means I travel on several different motorways several times a week so I'm often driving around people.

What I really can't understand is that they're in the second lane when there are three lanes, but when there are four, they move over one, leaving two empty lanes with no one on them, as if they are only comfortable if they have a single lane to their right.

Jollyjoy · 02/11/2025 17:07

Haha all the middle lane hoggers coming out answering you! It’s such crap driving. Sometimes I just progress in the lane but I’m not coordinated enough to manage to flash at them as well as overtaking. I just don’t understand why people do it. Although saying that DH does it sometimes because he’s too busy chatting, and has forgotten other people exist. It’s probably like that for lots of people. But if you do it and you read this, please stop! It’s so inconsiderate.

Not a middle lane hogger personally. I move over. Or if I need to, I overtake. I don't impatiently flash other drivers however.

I'm not flashing out of impatience. I'm flashing to alert them to their error.

What you are doing is a dangerous thing. You are causing a distraction. You may intimidate someone into moving over when it isn't safe.

Its not dangerous for someone to not be going as fast as you would like - I doubt they are doing 10mph OP, - if you are worried you will drive into the back of them, it is you are not driving with due care and attention.

You are really showing yourself to be the poor and dangerous driver here OP.

MigGirl · 02/11/2025 17:12

I hate middle lane hoggers to, although I don't flash them. It really annoys me when it's fairly busy though as they are effectively reducing the carriage way by a whole lane. I've seen people sit in the 3rd lane also when there are 4 lanes. I will just pass on the first lane then as they are unlikely to pull across 2 lanes at once.

How do you work out who the middle lane hoggers are? All I see are a lot of people telling Op to calm down.
Honestly - if you aren't coordinated enough to operate the stick for your lights while manoeuvring you shouldn't be on the road.

Poppingby · 02/11/2025 17:15

I'm not a middle lane hogger. I just don't understand why people get so enraged by it. I know it's a fineable offence as I remember when BJ brought it in to appease the masses but at one time it was advised not to change lanes too often on the motorway as that's when accidents happen.

If people are undertaking they are driving dangerously, nobody is making them do that. They could slow down and/or overtake.
