To flash at middle lane huggers?

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 02/11/2025 16:33

it really angers me how many people don’t know how to drive on the motorway. Especially the M25.

Why are there so many people who just sit in the middle lane and don’t move over? I don’t want to undertake people. So if I’m being made to slow down by a middle lane hogger I’ll flash at them to move over. More often than not they will move to the outside lane, so they obviously know where they should be?!

I do want to add that I also hate people who weave and undertake but I think they are just aggressive drivers and also if no one hogged the middle lane they wouldn’t be able to!

The M25 is the only motorway where I will undertake.
It's almost inevitable at times. Coming from the M1 heading towards Heathrow there are often times when it would be worse not to.

This is entirely irrelevant. If you aren’t actively overtaking, you drive in the inside lane. Basic Highway Code. Loads of people don’t even know the basics though.

Yes, it’s correct to drive in the inside lane unless overtaking 😊 Nevertheless I’m intrigued by what people consider to be ‘too slow’ when travelling in the middle lane.

There’s a huge difference between sitting in the middle lane at 50-60mph or doing 80-90 +

Notashamed13 · 02/11/2025 19:20

Yanbu.... I'm the passive aggressive twat that overtakes and goes back into the first Lane..........so annoying!

Nothing is driving too slow.....its about the conditions..if the first Lane is clear then that's where you should be!

Timeforabitofpeace · 02/11/2025 19:24

@FuckOffWithYourEllipsesI used to drive on the motorway a great deal, and most idiots flash if you’re overtaking but only doing 70.

Emiliilia · 02/11/2025 19:25

Are you the sort of person who honk when people don’t pull away fast enough on a green light or find themselves in the wrong lane and need to change too? In your head you think you are an amazing driver, but when I see people flashing others on the motorway I just think Dickhead.

SeaAndStars · 02/11/2025 19:26

Yes. I get angry at people who drive in a selfish and dangerous manner by hogging the middle lane which makes motorways less safe for everyone else. I didn't realise that was a particularly controversial view.

Maybe not controversial, but also not universal.

Angry probably account for more accidents than middle lane drivers and being angry almost certainly does you no good.

Do you feel the same about getting angry about drivers who are humping your rear bumper or change lanes without indicating? There is no difference between them and middle lane hoggers.

I actually would honk if I thought someone hadn’t realised the lights had changed? If someone did that to me I’d thank them before swiftly driving off. I’m not sure what you mean about the lanes? People flash to let people out…

No comparison in my opinion. Middle lane hogging is plain and simple dangerous. But those who do it simply dont understand.

Not a rush no, just hate that it causes people to have to do dangerous things

It doesnt cause people to do dangerous things. You arent forced to do something dangerous because someones doing something inconsidetate.

And if the middle laner in going the speed limit, then it shouldnt matter

I said don’t pull away fast enough. I was honked today by some idiot just as the light turned green. There are some really aggressive drivers about. Honking and flashing and generally thinking they are wonderful and own the road. They don’t realise how dangerous THEY are on the road constantly driving with high blood pressure getting annoyed with everyone around them.

dontletmedownbruce · 02/11/2025 19:38

It’s difficult not to drive in the middle lane.
If you stick to the slow lane, you’re overtaking freight and lorries literally every few minutes, which is a lot of overtaking. My car is light and flimsy, 20 years old and only cost £850. It doesn’t feel sturdy enough for the fast lane.
Both reasons why I’m more often than not in the middle lane.

NerrSnerr · 02/11/2025 19:41

1457bloom · 02/11/2025 18:18

everyone know you are not meant to stay in the middle lane, and it should just be for overtaking but the reality is that if you constantly go back to the first lane you get stuck behind slow moving vehicles so you need to constantly go back and forth between the first and second lane for overtaking. It is often difficult to move to the middle lane because it is so busy. So the most efficient way to drive is to stay in the middle lane at the speed limit. If anyone is frustrated at driving at the speed limit they shouldn’t blame the drivers in the middle lane, they should blame the law.

If there is a steady flow of traffic in the left lane and you’re driving faster than the traffic on your left then stay in the middle lane until a gap appears on the left.

The reason most people get stuck behind a lorry is because they don’t check their mirrors early enough and plan when to move out in time, and wait until they’re right behind the lorry, going slower than the middle lane, making it harder to get a gap to move into.

Why is overtaking any kind of a big deal, if literally takes seconds? If there’s lots of slower traffic on the left then stay in the middle until there’s a gap. Overtaking is just a normal part of driving.

I'm not a middle lane hogger. I just don't understand why people get so enraged by it. I know it's a fineable offence as I remember when BJ brought it in to appease the masses but at one time it was advised not to change lanes too often on the motorway as that's when accidents happen.

If people are undertaking they are driving dangerously, nobody is making them do that. They could slow down and/or overtake.

So changing lanes a lot is dangerous. So is that the excuse why people SHOULD just drive in the middle lane at 50/60mph? And everyone else should then have to change lanes (which you just said is dangerous) 2-3 times to get round them? Or also just drive at 50/60 in lane one despite a completely empty motorway? I’m not sure exactly what you’re trying to say?

You say middle land hogging was made an offence to appease the masses. So in your world it’s totally fine right? But would you still make undertaking an offence? Because I drive a lot on motorways. The road would literally never move. Lanes one and two would be totally empty with everyone driving at 50 in lanes 3 and 4. You know how I know that? Because it’s literally like that now at times. A 4 lane motorway and all you have is every car in lanes 3 and 4 all driving at 50-60mph.

JeminaTheGiantBear · 02/11/2025 19:48

What I’m taking from this thread is that often the people who cause devastating motorway accidents by undertaking at speed genuinely believe that they’re good drivers - & that the problem is only ‘other people’.

I wish we had sufficient police presence on motorways to deter people from undertaking at speed and flashing lights at other drivers. These responses to excessive use of the middle lane (which is clearly a thing, yes) are far more dangerous & irresponsible than is the excessive use of that lane. People die on motorways because of this type of behaviour.

Nearly50omg · 02/11/2025 19:48

Jus drive past them ffs!!!

Notashamed13 · 02/11/2025 19:50

And ps. There is no such thing as a "slow' lane.....

SoubbG · 02/11/2025 19:51

FuckOffWithYourEllipses · 02/11/2025 17:17

What kind of speed do you consider to be too slow for that lane, out of interest?

It’s not about speed though is it. You keep left unless overtaking. I don’t care if someone is doing 40 or 90 in the middle lane. They shouldn’t be in there unless they are overtaking someone.

Lifestooshort71 · 02/11/2025 19:51

My sister always drove in the middle lane and reckoned it was safer than to keep pulling out to overtake lorries. On reflection, she wasn't a confident driver and lacked the oomph to move in and out. In the past tense as she died 8 years ago (not driving related).

I do not undertake or flash, I just go round the middle lane hogger on the right silently seething.

People 100% shouldn’t undertake (and Mumsnet if full of people believing it’s allowed as well), but no one would have the chance to undertake if people didn’t hog the middle lane. It’s also dangerous that many middle lane hoggers do it as they’re scared to change lanes- that worries me as it’s really not scary to change lanes which makes me trust their observation and judgement.

Limmers14 · 02/11/2025 19:55

There was a lady on the M25 today doing 45mph in the third land. Honestly. How are some people not paying attention on a motorway

Jus drive past them ffs!!!

I’ve said in a subsequent post that what I mean is if I can’t drive past them because someone is overtaking me. I thought by saying ‘forced to slow down’ that would be a given that the next lane was unavailable but apparently not …
