To flash at middle lane huggers?

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 02/11/2025 16:33

it really angers me how many people don’t know how to drive on the motorway. Especially the M25.

Why are there so many people who just sit in the middle lane and don’t move over? I don’t want to undertake people. So if I’m being made to slow down by a middle lane hogger I’ll flash at them to move over. More often than not they will move to the outside lane, so they obviously know where they should be?!

I do want to add that I also hate people who weave and undertake but I think they are just aggressive drivers and also if no one hogged the middle lane they wouldn’t be able to!

You're accusing people of not knowing how to drive yet you're talking about flashing your lights at people. Oh the irony from the ill informed holier than thou department 😏

I'm not flashing out of impatience. I'm flashing to alert them to their error.

Just overtake

What kind of speed do you consider to be too slow for that lane, out of interest?

Cherrysoup · 02/11/2025 17:17

I absolutely agree and I do a lot of motorway miles. Middle lane hoggers drive me mad, but flashing may lead to trouble. My Dh is forever telling me tales of motorists who become extremely aggressive when flashed/confronted, so be circumspect. I find undertaking is sometimes the only way if other lanes aren’t safe to use.

Personally, I’d love a sign or a voice in their car that asks ’Who are you overtaking?’ as they dawdle along not overtaking anyone! I made an effort to check drivers during my last 5 hours on the motorway, seemed to be an even split between male/female drivers, mostly all middle aged.

IglesiasPiggl · 02/11/2025 17:17

I do a lot of motorway driving, and I too find middle lane hoggers very irritating. I have, however, also seen some terrible dangerous driving from people trying to "teach them how to use the motorway". I don't think any form of telling them off is better than just overtaking them on the right hand side. If you can't do that immediately then slow down to a safe distance behind them and do so as soon as you can. It won't be more than a moment or two in most cases.

DappledThings · 02/11/2025 17:18

If people are undertaking they are driving dangerously, nobody is making them do that. They could slow down and/or overtake.
If someone is hogging the middle lane then I have to either undertake them or cross two lanes to overtake and two lanes to come back. A entirely unnecessary double maneuver that would be avoided if they had moved to the empty left lane miles earlier as they should have done. These people deserve a flash.

Anyone who flashes their headlights at anyone on motorways is a twat. Do you also tailgate?

Just stop

dynamiccactus · 02/11/2025 17:18

My mum always says that if you have time to beep you have time to brake.

In the same vein I would say that if you have time to flash, you have time to overtake.

Also, are they "hogging" or are they minding their own business overtaking someone else more slowly than you would like? I don't really get the hogging thing, unless someone really is driving for miles with an empty inside lane next to them. Which is unusual, as UK motorways are so busy!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 02/11/2025 17:18

If you blind someone by flashing them it really doesn't help. I was flashed the other night. I was about to move in but was leaving additional room due to the driving conditions and the van behind me was clearly in a rush. I no was completely blinded which strangely didn't help me to judge whether it was safe to move back in.

The speed is immaterial. It is them driving next to an empty lane that is the problem.

Like flashing?

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 02/11/2025 17:21

Wow, I can't believe the voting here
YANBU.

If someone is impeding the flow of traffic by hogging the middle lane, then they need to be duly advised/ flashed si that they can move to the appropriate lane.

It is selfish, idiotic and downright dangerous driving to circulate only in the middle lane.

You don't have to. You could slow down. And if you are undertaking you are driving dangerously. Crossing two lanes is a faff but not dangerous. If the middle lane 'hogger' realises they should be in the inside while your are manoeuvring faster than them into the inside lane where they might justifiably expect you not to because it's the law - crash. Nobody is 'making' you do this.

Iheartmysmart · 02/11/2025 17:22

I drove down the M4 today and there were plenty of middle lane hoggers. Pootling along, totally oblivious despite the left hand lane being pretty much empty. I can’t be bothered to flash my lights at them, but if they look over while I’m passing them I do mouth ‘twat’ at them.

Like your behaviour in response to it, flashing people which can distract, intimidate, etc. - those kind of dangerous things? I get it is frustrating and understand why, but that doesn’t excuse your behaviour either which is also not okay.

The hogger should be using mirrors before pulling into the left lane

I could slow down. And go under the road speed in an empty lane but that would be shit driving too just to placate someone driving even in an even shitter way. There is no defence for driving in the middleane next to an empty lane. It's lazy and crap.

Goditsmemargaret · 02/11/2025 17:27

This drives me mad. I only learned to drive in my 40s and I couldn't believe it when people who had been driving for decades gave me useful 'advice' to get into the middle lane of the motorway where I'm safe.

Muppets.

Two wrongs don't make right. It's dangerous to flash your lights, so stop doing that.

How the fuck is it dangerous to flash your lights? If you can’t handle being flashed out,
you shouldn’t be driving.
Also get out of the middle lane.

Why the fuck should I "slow down" or " faff" because someone is thinking only of their own convenience and therefore driving dangerously .

I'm gonna beep and flash every time.
Don't like it? Learn to drive properly.

Notmyreality · 02/11/2025 17:29

I suspect a huge number of people on here opposing OP are in fact the ones who prefer to sit in the middle lane where they feel “safe”

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 02/11/2025 17:29

i do not understand all the people who are saying I should slow down rather than saying they should move over. It’s them that are committing an offence.

You are allowed to flash people to let them know of your presence (Lorries also do it to let people know they’ve cleared their front and can pull in) l. However, I take on board that it is a distraction and can be taken as aggressive!

Of course. However, you should not be there, moving faster than them. It is reasonable to expect you not to be. If you both move simultaneously they wouldn't see you until it was potentially too late. Additionally if they really are unreasonably hogging the middle lane it's safer to assume they're not paying as much attention as you are so your unexpected manoeuvre is even more likely to result in an accident. There is just no excuse. I'm not excusing their crap driving either but you can't control that. You can however control your own actions by not driving dangerously (undertaking).

Driving aggressively could cause someone to make a driving error it could also mean you yourself are not focused on what you should be because you are busy correcting others. As they say in the classroom, "Make sure you are doing the right thing, you are only responsible for your actions".

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 02/11/2025 17:30

If you hog the middle lane you are an inept driver.
End of.
