AIBU to cook a 1KG chicken for 5 people at Christmas?

Our family have voted to have chicken at Christmas this year. We normally have a 1KG chicken for 4 people. Two people have a breast and the other two have a leg each.

However, at Christmas, there will be 5 of us at the table. I was thinking that as there will be starters, sides and a pudding at the feast , then our usual 1KG chicken might stretch to 5 people?

Am I being over optimistic?

Sorry but that's not going to be enough imo.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/11/2025 17:59

Just buy one of those XXL chickens rather than the usual one.

TheKeatingFive · 01/11/2025 17:59

It will be enough, but personally I like some leftovers. I usually go for a bigger one myself. We're the same, my family want a chicken rather than a turkey.

CosySeason · 01/11/2025 18:00

Are things tight? Buy a bigger one.

toastofthetown · 01/11/2025 18:00

I wouldn’t describe a 1kg chicken between five as a feast.

Foxybyname · 01/11/2025 18:00

It depends on their appetites I guess.
I guess you'll have pigs in blankets, and pork stuffing so that's additional meat to pad it out!

Lennonjingles · 01/11/2025 18:00

Wouldn’t be enough in my family, when we have 5, I get 2 chickens, but that’s 4 adult males and myself.

Ineffable23 · 01/11/2025 18:01

I'm astonished that a 1kg feeds 4 normally, given the weight of carcass reducing the available meat. But you can easily obtain a chicken that is 1.5 or even 2kg, so why not do that?

Arrrrrrragghhh · 01/11/2025 18:01

You need leftovers for sandwiches and Boxing Day.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 01/11/2025 18:01

YABU said the chicken

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/11/2025 18:02

I think a single chicken between 5 is going to look mean. If you usually have four people splitting breasts and legs then your fifth person is going to end up with scraps. If you can’t afford more, ask your guests to contribute. Otherwise, buy two chickens so everyone gets their choice of white or dark meat, plus leftovers.

waitamo · 01/11/2025 18:03

Depending on what the extra person likes, either buy an extra leg or a breast fillet and stick a bit of the skin on it when cooked😊

I think that'd be fine with all the trimmings and loads of stuffing. Too much piggery goes on anyway. Leave room for pudding!

Nothankyov · 01/11/2025 18:03

Personally I think that 1kg chicken for 4 is tight. But maybe because my family is 3 boys and 2 girls and that would not be enough at all.

NikkiPotnick · 01/11/2025 18:08

I'd get a bigger one if poss.

CoolFineDoneWicked · 01/11/2025 18:09

Is a 1kg chicken even a thing? It would be almost a poussin. Not nearly enough, but I'm not interested in cooking a feast unless I've got a week's worth of leftovers.

FuzzyWolf · 01/11/2025 18:12

What’s happened to Mumsnet? I thought one chicken could cover a week’s meals and still be plenty for the freezer afterwards!

OP, it depends on the size and appetites as well as what else you will be serving. Will you have gammon or another meat to accompany it?

Buildingthefuture · 01/11/2025 18:13

This is MN where the magical chicken feeds the 5000, does lunches for a week and also provides nutritious homemade broth. IRL however, no, a 1kg chicken will not feed 5 people. Even if they’ve just been to Burger King. Buy a bigger chicken (at least 2kgs).

Bagsintheboot · 01/11/2025 18:13

There's quite a bit of meat on a chicken, you need to ensure you get at the thighs too and not just the drumsticks.

It might be enough depending on what else is going on. For example in addition to the goose we have pigs in blankets, three kinds of stuffing, and vegetables including roast potatoes, so in our case a 1kg chicken between 5 would probably be fine.

If you're serving it up with just vegetables, I'd say you need more.

SparrowFeet · 01/11/2025 18:14

Bloody hell - 1kg chicken for 5? That feeds one person with a bit leftover for lunch surely?

cestlavielife · 01/11/2025 18:14

Yes if you buy two of them

Snorlaxo · 01/11/2025 18:17

Is 1kg chicken a thing? I cook chicken roasts for 2 and cook a 1.5kg chicken and have some leftovers.

InfoSecInTheCity · 01/11/2025 18:17

You’re not allowing for leftovers, the best part of the Christmas dinner is the leftovers sandwich you make late evening or on Boxing Day.

ItsNeverNoReason · 01/11/2025 18:20

No one really wants a chicken leg for Christmas dinner. Just buy a pack of 5 chicken breasts.

Mangetouts · 01/11/2025 18:21

I've ordered a 3kg capon for 4. That's for Christmas day, plates to take to Ml and FiL on Boxing Day, sandwiches and soup. It has to be big enough to be generous at this time of year.

That's not true at all. Lots of people would prefer a leg.
