AIBU to cook a 1KG chicken for 5 people at Christmas?

Our family have voted to have chicken at Christmas this year. We normally have a 1KG chicken for 4 people. Two people have a breast and the other two have a leg each.

However, at Christmas, there will be 5 of us at the table. I was thinking that as there will be starters, sides and a pudding at the feast , then our usual 1KG chicken might stretch to 5 people?

Am I being over optimistic?

Chicken will be just one component of the meal, so I’d say it was fine. There are far better parts of a Christmas dinner than the meat anyway IMO.

However, it you want leftovers then buy a bigger one.

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 01/11/2025 18:22

I could probably eat that to myself tbh. It’s not a very big chicken!

Endofyear · 01/11/2025 18:22

I would do two, it's nice to have leftovers for sandwiches anyway! Or chicken fried rice, stir fry, chicken & mushroom pie...there's loads you can do with leftover chicken!

Icecreamandcoffee · 01/11/2025 18:22

I was half expecting the comments to reflect the magic MN chicken. I thought a chicken was able to feed 20 people for the entire week.

Realistically, get a bigger chicken. Then you have enough for leftovers/ seconds.

Jc2001 · 01/11/2025 18:23

Ok for a starter 😃

Allthecoloursoftherainbow4 · 01/11/2025 18:24

Where would you even buy a 1kg chicken thats tiny?! A standard supermarket large chicken is more like 1.75kg and should be ok for 5 people given you'll probably have sausages too?

This is a bit of a weird query really as im not sure its even that possible to buy such a small chicken why would you actively look for one so small.

Not sure that this thread is genuine, it feels designed to goad people into trading insults about under or overeating...

TheatricalLife · 01/11/2025 18:25

It wouldn't be enough here, but you know your guests. I'd either do a bigger chicken, two, or another accompanying main (I do a beef and a turkey). All of those you can keep for the next day sandwiches or cold cuts.

Uricon2 · 01/11/2025 18:27

Unless 3 of the 5 are vegetarian, it is far too small. A 2kg would do it with a few leftovers (as long as noone has seconds, it is Christmas!)

Overthebow · 01/11/2025 18:27

Why wouldn’t you just buy a bigger chicken? Chicken is cheap anyway, and it’s better to have enough than too little especially at Christmas with a guest. Do plenty of sides too like stuffing, yorkshires, pigs in blankets.

user2848502016 · 01/11/2025 18:28

I’d buy a bigger one or even two medium sized, cold chicken as leftovers will always be useful at Christmas anyway

RAPSMom · 01/11/2025 18:29

Oh my days…. Son would eat that on his own.

TitsInAbsentia · 01/11/2025 18:30

@RAPSMom my DH would too!
OP just buy a bigger chicken, anything left stick it in the freezer but as people say always time for a leftover sarnie.

Janeeyrre · 01/11/2025 18:32

I think it depends on peoples appetite, in my family we could say 'listen folks don't be greedy thats all we have' in a jokey way and everyone would be mindful when taking meat.

But if you cant do that I would go for a bigger one, or discreetly tell your DH/DC to stock up on pigs in blankets/roasties instead of meat and let guests have more.

I've ordered a 3kg capon for 4. That's for Christmas day, plates to take to Ml and FiL on Boxing Day, sandwiches and soup. It has to be big enough to be generous at this time of year.

Edited

It's illegal to castrate a cockerel in the UK so either you're abroad or you're buying imported meat.

ChickenChristmasDinner · 01/11/2025 18:35

Omg! I will buy two then!

We particularly like a cooked whole pre marinated chicken that you cook in a bag. I buy it from Sainsburys. It only comes as up to 1.1KG. I have tried other whole chickens, but this particular one is so tasty.

Hopefully it will work ok to roast 2 chickens at the same time in the Christmas oven!

Get a bigger chicken and slice it all up so no one is getting one part of it. It will not only go further, it is fairer.

Can you tell us which chicken you buy or give us a link please?

Butchers still sell them in the UK but they are imported I believe

OP i wouldnt serve that for christmas day. Its not even freshly cooked its been pre-cooked so once reheated will be so dry
It also says 1.1kg is the MAX weight... It could be a low as 900g which is just not enough.
Honestly buy a normal fresh chicken that is cooked from raw, wrap the skin in bacon for flavour and it will be so much juicier and fresher

Uricon2 · 01/11/2025 18:47

That chicken is already cooked OP. 2 of them in at the same time should be heated in less than an hour.

ETA I now think OP is on the wind up.

Timeforabitofpeace · 01/11/2025 18:47

The smallest turkeys are all bone and no meat. The carcass will take all the weight. Don’t do it. A chicken would have more meat.

MarbleHunt · 01/11/2025 18:48

I don’t get why you’d do that @ChickenChristmasDinner?

The chicken I cooked for dinner today for me and two kids was over 2kg. The extra will be used for wraps and chicken soup made with stock from the bones.

Surely at Christmas you would just cook a larger one and if there are leftovers that’s hardly a bad thing - cold roast chicken is great for Boxing Day buffet/ snacking or you can freeze any leftovers.
