AIBU to cook a 1KG chicken for 5 people at Christmas?

Our family have voted to have chicken at Christmas this year. We normally have a 1KG chicken for 4 people. Two people have a breast and the other two have a leg each.

However, at Christmas, there will be 5 of us at the table. I was thinking that as there will be starters, sides and a pudding at the feast , then our usual 1KG chicken might stretch to 5 people?

Am I being over optimistic?

I think this is a good wind up for sure - 1kg is an extra small chicken so your obviously doing a wind up.

I agree.
The famous MN chicken - raw, no added nasties - feeds a family of 5 for a week.

What else do you have? I have a tiny bit of turkey on a plate with roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, pigs in. Blankets, couliflower cheese, gammon, red cabbage. Etc etc.. I don’t need a massive amount of the turkey.

Depending on what the extra person likes, either buy an extra leg or a breast fillet and stick a bit of the skin on it when cooked😊

I think that'd be fine with all the trimmings and loads of stuffing. Too much piggery goes on anyway. Leave room for pudding!

And tell the guests that it was a 3-legged chicken!

Just buy 5 chicken breasts;easier to cook,no pissing about carving a chicken and messing with the carcass and probably less mess in the roasting tin.

You could even make a slit in them and pop in the stuffing then wrap them in bacon 😋

Borethefuckoff · 02/11/2025 19:44

I find this such a random question! If in doubt just get two.. it’s Christmas, treat yourself!! It sounds measly for me on Xmas day… unless your sides are a side of gammon?!

Thesteinwaysyouvebeenleadingmeon · 02/11/2025 19:49

Please sir ..can I have some more🍗

Jesus, a chicken breast, that would be my Christmas ruined. Not everyone likes a chicken breast, I never eat the breast.

NaneePolly · 02/11/2025 20:28

It’s Christmas - push the boat out and get a 2kg chicken!

ThatRareLimeFinch · 02/11/2025 20:38

i cook on average a 1.5-1.6kg chicken most weeks, that does a roast for 3 or 4 of us, and then a full meal the next day.
how you serve the met makes a huge difference, i only use 1.5 of the breasts between us all (4people) for the roast then the rest of the meat gets pulled off for the second meal

shredding the chicken makes a smaller weight look like a much larger amount of food, rather than slices.

we always have between 1/4-1/3 of a dinner plate of meat just by shredding.

Just buy one of those XXL chickens rather than the usual one.

The ones full of steroids?
(As chickens are not normally these sizes...)

Bigearringsbigsmile · 02/11/2025 21:00

What will the rest of your Christmas dinner consist of?

No one really wants a chicken leg for Christmas dinner. Just buy a pack of 5 chicken breasts.

I love a chicken leg! Chicken thighs are my favourite meat. It's more moist

OhcantthInkofaname · 02/11/2025 21:05

I am in the US. I assumed that meant one chicken for each person.

DearDenimEagle · 02/11/2025 21:08

And we had a 32lb turkey for 6 of us, admittedly to have enough for another day…😂but we’d have a 28 pounder for New Year as well

a kg chicken would be gone before it was out of the oven 5 minutes. DH could never resist picking in advance

childofthe607080s · 02/11/2025 21:18

The chicken with stuffing and pigs probably ok but 1kg is quite small for a chicken and there would unlikely be left overs and not much feeling of special

bubzie · 02/11/2025 21:23

Can you pad it out with salad? 🥗

Zodiacrobat · 02/11/2025 21:24

Janeeyrre · 01/11/2025 18:32

I think it depends on peoples appetite, in my family we could say 'listen folks don't be greedy thats all we have' in a jokey way and everyone would be mindful when taking meat.

But if you cant do that I would go for a bigger one, or discreetly tell your DH/DC to stock up on pigs in blankets/roasties instead of meat and let guests have more.

How fucking miserable would Christmas be to have to “stock up” on sides rather than having the amount of main meal meat that you want? Grim.

Unless completely in poverty, just buy a big enough bird to feed everyone properly with enough for seconds/sandwiches fgs. Christmas is not the time to be short or stinting on portions!

Allseeingallknowing · 02/11/2025 21:43

OP you will have nothing left over to eat later or next day. Get a turkey crown or two chickens

TwinklyNight · 02/11/2025 21:48

OP, I'd get 2 chickens and make a big pan of stuffing. A basket of dinner rolls. Extra spuds and some veggies. Cranberry sauce and gravy. Use tins if cooking space is limited. Maybe a small heat and serve ham if budget allows.

HoneyPie12 · 02/11/2025 21:53

It won't be enough. That would be a stretch for us with 3 boys me and my husband although it would and does do on a Sunday with a boatload of trimmings - it's a bit stingy. It only works for us as I have had weight loss surgery so eat like a small child haha x

fetchacloth · 02/11/2025 21:57

YABU, having read your post OP I assumed you were having chicken sandwiches.
I would double the size of the chicken.

Kelticgold · 02/11/2025 22:24

Are they just 2 adults and 3 weaning babies?

torkandgrunt · 02/11/2025 22:49

A large FROZEN chichen will cost less than a medium-large fresh one.
You will get 8 portions plus the wings.
Divide the leg portions into wing, thigh and drumstick. 0
Divide each breast portion into two.
If you do stuffing balls and maybe c
hipotatas - that's plenty !

Endorewitch · 02/11/2025 23:10

A 1kg chicken between 5!!Just buy 2 chickens. The fact you are even asking shows you know it is realky not enough. What if someone wants a sandwich later?
